FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE

He told them to touch His hands and feet to see he was not a ghost, but something totally unique. This is the Paschal Mystery opened up again for us; God through the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, has called us to become totally new with Him. As was said at Christmas and Easter Sunday, Humanity is not the same as it was at the time of Creation, for in Jesus we have all become a new creation. As Saint Francis reminds us in the prayer credited to him; ...it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. During this Easter Season many of our young peo-ple will be receiving Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the first time. Please keep them and their families in your prayers, so that they will remain or become families that make Mass a priority in their lives. Also please keep in your prayers Mr. Frank DellAglio and Mr. Bill Dobbins who are to be ordained Deacons for the Diocese and our Parish on May 17th. Pray for them their wives Kathy and Blanca and their children too. Also remember in your prayers Deacon Lachlan Cameron who will be ordained a Priest for the Diocese on June 14th.

Happy Easter Fr. Mike

Todays Gospel Reading presents us with another example of disbelief in the mission and the person of Jesus the Christ. We see this in the account of The Road to Emmaus. On the road, two disciples are walk-ing away from Jerusalem on that first Easter Sunday Afternoon. They were conversing about what had occurred in the past 3 days: how Jesus was betrayed, handed over to the Romans, and died on the Cross. They were in utter disbelief and so absorbed in their disappointment that they did not notice this other person walking up behind them. When this stranger asked what they were talking about, Cleopas, looking downcast, could not believe that this person did not know about the things that had occurred in Jerusalem! So, when this stranger questioned them, they began to give an account of Jesus Ministry and how He was a great prophet powerful in word and deed. But then He was betrayed, handed over and killed. They also expressed their disappointment in Jesus and how they totally gave up all hope as they said; we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel At that moment, Jesus began to tell them all about Himself and how the Scriptures and the Prophets fore-told all that the Messiah would have to suffer, then die so that all may have life and so to enter into His True Glory. Yet, while they were so caught up with every-thing this stranger had to say, they could not figure out who it was that was with them. But they were very caught up with him and they did not want him to leave, so they ask him to stay with them as they near the village. As they sat down at table the stranger took the bread, blessed it, and broke it and then they recognized that it was Jesus as they saw Him do what He did before. Now they knew, now they began to understand what the Paschal Mystery was all about, and now they realized that the Resurrection reported by the women of the group was indeed true, and something totally differ-ent from what they thought it would be! For the Risen Jesus had changed from what He was before the Resurrection: thats why they could not recognize Him and why He was able to come upon them without their noticing Him. By walking and talk-ing with them and offering the blessing and breaking of the bread, they realized that the Resurrection was not just returning to this life, but something wonderful and glorious. As we saw last week, the Apostles first thought that Jesus was a ghost because He came through locked doors and windows, so He asked for something to eat.

OUTREACH [email protected]

Feinstein Matching Grant - This foundation will match all donations made to the Outreach Program during the months of March and April. The more of a donation you send the more Feinstein money Outreach will get.

Dear Friend: My name is Alan Shawn Feinstein. For the past 10 years, I have been giving away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country. This year, I am doing it again...whatever you donate to OUTREACH, I will add money to it. The more you give, the more of my $1 MILLION theyll get thanks to you! Why am I doing this? Because I believe each of us was put here on earth to do what we can to help those in need. This letter is written because we feel that YOU believe that, too. This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country. Your donation makes you a partner in it with me! Im only here to give you some support and to remind you of this: That all that will matter to us someday is what we did while we were here to help those who needed us.

Please give whatever you can I will gladly add some of my money to yours. Thank you for sharing my heart, and the hope that-someday-no one will ever go hungry. Sincerely Yours, Alan Shawn Feinstein

RESPECT LIFE

The following poem was submitted for consideration in the Diocese of Rockville Centres Respect Life contest for 2008, for all 7th and 8th graders in the Diocese. The theme of

the contest was Before I Was Born God Knew Me. We hope you feel as excited by this submission as we do! BEFORE I WAS BORN GOD KNEW ME God is the creator of all He loves us no matter what we do God created us in His divine image He knew me before I was born He breathed life in me He chose my family He chose how tall I would be, my personality, my eye color He helped my fingers grow, so that I may touch others lives He had my legs and feet grow, to walk in His foot-steps He opened my eyes to see His wondrous deeds and beautiful world He helped my brain to learn to worship Him, to be successful in all that I do He helped me learn to walk and run, so that I may serve Him in His house He helped me strengthen my heart to feel for others, to have love for the world He helps me everyday trying to be a better person. God knew that my life would mean something to everyone I met, And those people would also touch my life and help shape me. I thank the Lord everyday for this beautiful thing called life And I can only hope to serve Him the best that I can All the days of my life. Thank you Lord!

By Matthew Terrano St. Josephs School Grade 7 Mrs. Herr

Congratulations to Matthew, who was a finalist in the contest, & also to all the 7th & 8th graders of St. Josephs School who entered in the poetry, essay & bookmark portions of the contest. You are all winners with us!

Change For Life Sat. April 12th & Sun. April 13th

On the above weekend a special pro-life project will be presented to the parishioners of St. Josephs Church. After each Mass a representative from the Life Center of Long Island will explain the services provided expectant mothers. You will be asked to take home a baby bottle and for four weeks place spare change in the bottle. St. Josephs Respect Life Committee will distribute the bottles from the front entrance. The Life Center serves thousands of mothers each year. Since this work requires office space, telephones, staff, and educational materials it is understandable that monetary support from the pro-life community is needed. We thank Rev. Maffeo for welcoming this effort.

Sat. May 10th and Sun. May 11th

On this Mothers Day weekend the bottles are to be returned. Members our Committee will be available before and after each Mass. All proceeds from the bottles will be presented to the Life Center.

Note: The baby items collected each year on Mothers Day and on Respect Life Sunday in October are shared by St. Josephs Parish Outreach, Birthright, and the Life Center. This Mothers Day we will not ask for baby clothing, diapers, etc. We will gladly accept handmade clothing and blankets crocheted and knitted by parishioners and any baby items you may have purchased in advance. But if you have not already made a purchase we ask that you support the Change for Life bottle project. Checks can be made to: Life Center of Long Island. In October 2008 we will resume our regular Gifts for Babies collection. For information call St. Joseph Respect Life Committee at 588-0168 /724-8586.

Golden Wedding Jubilee On Sunday, May 18th, 2008 couples married 50 years or more are invited to a special mass to be celebrated by Bishop Peter Libasci at St Lawrence the Martyr, Sayville at 3:00 pm. Please pick up your registration card at the rectory, fill it out and return it to the rectory in time to reach the Diocese of Rockville Centre no later than May 4, 2008. Approximately one week to ten days before the ceremony information regarding the day will be mailed to you. If you have any questions you may call 516-678-5800 extension 242.

Dear Members of St Josephs R.C. Church, My name is Catherine Fitzgerald & I have been a member of St Josephs Parish for many years. I now am a sophomore at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. In June, I am participat-ing in Manhattan Colleges Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience to Tijuana, Mexico. We are spending a week with Los Ninos, an organization on the border dedicated to helping impoverished communities provide schools for their children. I will be spending a week building schools with these commu-nities, while also learning about the border region & Mexican Culture. Our team has to fundraise over $15,000 in order to partici-pate in this service experience. This includes a donation to Los Ninos to cover housing, meals, transportation & supplies, as well as airfare. Any donations to help our team have this incredible experience would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to make a donation at this time, you can make a check out to Manhattan College & put my name as the subject of the check. All donations are tax deductible. You can mail your check to Campus Ministry Social Action, 4513 Manhattan College Parkway, Riverdale, NY 10471. If you cannot make a donation at this time, please keep me & my team in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your time. I am excited about my upcoming journey & feel that it is going to be a rewarding experience. Sincerely, Catherine Fitzgerald
