Music The gig scene with Clare Robinson Opportunity to get intimate with Laura Marling in Devon ‘This is the next part of our story and we’re loving it’ S COTTISH pop-rockers Texas are heading back to Plymouth Pavilions this autumn to promote their new album Jump On Board. Written and produced by band stalwarts Johnny McElhone and Sharleen Spiteri in London and Glasgow, and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Florence & The Ma- chine, Noel Gallagher), the upbeat record is the perfect antidote to these rather worrying times. Due for release on April 21, the album boasts recent single Let’s Work It Out which was playlisted on Radio 2 and had a video starring footballer Thierry Henry. Having sold over 35 million records with three number one albums, seven top ten albums and 13 top ten singles, Jump On Board looks set to continue their im- pressive chart success. “When music’s in your DNA, what’s gone in will come back out,” says Shar- leen. “Jump On Board has references, of course, but it’s an up-front, mod- ern-sounding record. “We feel refreshed. We definitely had a great time making this record. It’s time to jig it all up. It’s like a new beginning. This is the next part of our story, and we’re loving it.” Texas’s debut album, Southside, went Gold back in 1989 and the huge first single, I Don’t Want A Lover, launched former hairdresser Sharleen as an iconic singer in the mould of Chrissie Hynde and Patti Smith. Fourth album White On Blonde, re- leased in 1997, was the group’s first num- ber one. It has been certified six-times Platinum and has sold 1.65 million copies. Sharleen knows her audience and doesn’t mess with the band’s winning formula on the new album, which delivers a familiar mix of tuneful rock. Asked by the Daily Mail whether she checked out the competition at the Brit Awards, she reportedly looked baffled. “Why would I go to The Brits?” she said. “It means nothing to me. “I look at young bands and I feel sorry for them because their music is sold through streaming and you can pick tracks out like you are at a buffet bar. “People download songs, not whole al- bums, so it’s tough for young bands to tour an album.” She was equally dismissive about ap- pearing on major TV shows. “Going on Strictly Come Dancing or The X Factor costs a band a fortune. “It’s about £30,000 to go on Strictly and about £100,000 for The X Factor because you pay for the whole production, the lighting, the staging. “You will sell records but it’s all about money. I’d rather do a festival, where there’s a real connection to the audience who’ve come to see you.” But at almost 50, how much longer does she want to continue? “For as long as I can still carry it off,” she joked. “Madonna, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde are still doing it. I know all three of them.” Her friendship with Madge began after she requested that Stella McCartney bring Sharleen to dinner at her house. “She was a lot of fun and is brilliantly sarcastic. I love a woman who can do sarcasm well.” Just weeks ago, Sharleen got engaged to chef Bryn Williams, whom she has been dating for the past ten years. She has a 14-year-old daughter, Misty, from a previous long-term relationship. “Life is good. I’m nearly 50 and I’m touring with Texas. I’m getting married for the first time, when loads of people my age are either getting divorced or are on their third husband. “I love my job and I don’t need to worry about anything.” When & Where: October 7, Plymouth Pavilions Sharleen and the boys heading back to Plymouth TEXAS Texas in action at Plymouth Pavilions back in November 2013 LAURA Marling will play an in- timate sold-out solo show at the Exeter Lemon Grove on Sunday to promote her critically-acclaimed new album. It was recorded in LA in late 2015, and produced alongside US mu- sician-producer Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes). Semper Femina is Laura’s sixth studio album in a little over nine years, addressing questions of how society views sexuality and gender but without seeking to provide definitive answers. The title comes from a Virgil poem, the full quote being ‘Varium et mutabile semper femina’, which translates as ‘woman is ever a fickle and changeable thing’. Its loose lyrical thread strings together her keen, freshly observed take on womanhood, and what Laura describes as a particularly ‘masculine time in her life’. She said: “We’re accustomed to seeing women through men’s eyes, and naturally that was my inclin- ation to take some power over that, but very quickly realised the powerful thing to do was to look at women through a woman’s eyes. “I don’t need to pretend it’s a man to justify the intimacy, or the way I’m looking and feeling about wo- men. It’s me looking specifically at women and feeling great empathy towards them, and by proxy, to- wards myself.” A rich and enriching work, the record is a typically mature and raw listen by one of our most tal- ented and prolific musicians. It follows the success of Laura’s recent Podcast series, Reversal Of The Muse. As an exploration of femininity in creativity, the collaborative pro- ject opened up an important con- versation around whether the lack of feminine presence in the studio environment would make any dif- ference to the creative outcome. With no ulterior motives, nor any pre-conceived expectations, ROTM was as much about the conver- sation created than expecting a conclusive answer. Guests included Haim, Karen El- son, Vanessa Parr, Dolly Parton, Shura, and Emmylou Harris. Laura also made her directorial debut with the video for opening track Soothing – inspired by a series of vivid dreams she exper- ienced while making the album. She said: “I found it quite stress- ful, but that’s in my nature. But I found it one of the more easy, cre- ative things I’ve ever done. “To give my lucid dreaming qual- ity to this, which is where I get a lot of imagery from, was an amazing experience. It was fun, really fun.” So does the multi-talented star ever think about what she would’ve been if she hadn’t been a musician? “Yes, I think about that con- stantly. I would have always had music in my life, but I think I probably would have been a chef. “I could see that being a fun way to make money, if I didn’t have to be the head chef of a restaurant – that’d be scary.” When & Where: March 26, Exeter Lemon Grove P EOPLE who have a connec- tion with or affection for Maker Heights are invited to a Tea Dance tomorrow af- ternoon at the Kingsand Com- munity Hall. It’s partly intended as a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who sup- ported the recent initiative for the retention of the Barrack Building by the Rame Conservation Trust (RCT), and it is partly to get people involved with Maker Memories, a project that runs in conjunction with Plymouth Museum and His- tory Centre, which is recording and preserving photographs, film and audio memories of the many school children who enjoyed time there, often as their only holidays away from home. The RCT has been working hard for nearly 20 years to conserve and restore the Barrack and Garrison buildings and surrounding fields and woodland at Maker so the her- itage and history of the area is not forgotten. And in 2016 Maker with Rame CIC was set up in order to ensure that community assets and spaces which promote music and the arts are preserved in the area. To date the CIC has raise over £10,000 towards repairing the Bar- rack building. Over the past 20 years, Maker has helped artists and musicians flour- ish, amid its breath-taking land- scape, providing studio, workshop and performance space as well as hosting the much missed Maker Sunshine Festival. Tomorrow’s Tea Dance will bring the two worlds together as musicians involved with Maker will provide music to evoke nos- talgia from a bygone era. “We decided that we had to form a swing band for the occasion,” says session drummer Geoff Lea, who relocated to the area from London a couple of years ago, spe- cifically because of the strong mu- sic scene here. Geoff has performed with all manner of musicians in London and contributed drums on Ed Sheeran’s previous album. “We wanted to get away from the city but not somewhere so remote that there was nothing happening. “We chose this part of Cornwall as there is so much quality mu- sicianship here and we loved the artistic set up at Maker.” The swing band will comprise of Antimatador members Jacob Kodicek on keys and Dan Hillman on brass, plus Tom Stubberfield on bass. “Our last rehearsal was sound- ing great,” continues Geoff enthu- siastically, “it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Recently there has been a lot of change at Maker with the previous Rame Conservation Trust opting to dispose of many freehold assets to a private property developer, caus- ing a huge amount of upset. However, a new board of Trustees has now been appointed and they have retained their leasehold land at Maker including most of the campsite and the Nissen hut com- plex which houses the Canteen. The new enthusiastic team are looking at ways of taking the site forward successfully. Looking back is also important, however, and Maker Memories will focus on capturing the rich and diverse stories of Maker that exist in living memory, including stories of attending Maker Camp as a child for school holidays, a scheme ori- ginally set up by Lady Nancy Astor which ran through to the early 1980s. Those in the mood are invited to don gladrags and join the party tomorrow afternoon. Either dance to this wonderful swing band or simply drop by, enjoy the music and share memories over a cream tea. The event, which is completely free, will be made possible by a generous donation from the Corn- wall Council Community Chest of Councillor George Trubody.
