LAPLACE — Comcast announced Monday it has launched an Internet service delivering speeds up to one gigabit-per-second to residential and business customers in LaPlace.

Comcast is delivering these speeds using existing wiring that most peo-ple already have in their homes, com-pany officials said.

The gigabit service is among the

fastest and most widely available in the area, company officials said, add-ing it includes access on the go to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network of more than 19 million hotspots.

“Now more than ever, our cus-tomers require the fastest avail-able speeds to support the growing number of devices at home and in the workplace,” said Doug Guthrie, Regional Senior Vice President at Comcast. “We’re thrilled to bring gigabit speeds to the most homes and

businesses of any provider across the region.”

With a one gigabit connection, cus-tomers can:

• Download a 5 gigabyte HD movie in 40 seconds;

• Download a 600 megabyte TV epi-sode in four seconds;

• Download a 150 megabyte music album in two seconds; and

• Download 15 gigabyte video game in two minutes

The everyday price for residential

one gigabit service is $139.95 a month without a term contract.

Bundled product pricing is also available and professional installa-tion is required.

Those interested in the service need a gigabit-capable modem, such as the company’s newest xFi Advanced Gateway, to achieve the faster speeds. New and current customers can visit Xfinity.com/gig to learn more.

Comcast introducing faster speed service in LaPlace

LAPLACE — At Place Dubourg in LaPlace, seniors age 62 and older independent-ly maintain their own apart-ments, sign up for voluntary social events and come and go as they please.

Located at 201 Rue Dubourg behind St. Charles Catholic High School, the five-story facility is often misidenti-fied as a nursing home or an assisted living center, according to community manager Lynn Williams.

With a mission to pro-vide affordable housing for seniors, Place Dubourg offers a comfortable, community-oriented atmosphere to self-reliant residents.

The facility boasts 116 cli-mate controlled one-bedroom apartments, which include individual ovens and refrig-erators. The facility includes on-site laundry and mainte-nance services.

Single seniors primar-ily occupy rooms, Williams said, adding rent is based on a tenant’s adjusted monthly income.

“Residents only pay 30 per-cent of what they make, so they’re not spending $900 or $1,000 each month in rent,” Williams said. “That way, they still have money to buy their medicine and grocer-ies.”

Williams said residents benefit from not having to deal with the upkeep of a house, citing grass cutting and pest control as examples of services provided at the facility.

Individuals under 62 with physical disabilities may qualify for a limited number of accessible units, provid-ing easier access to show-ers, sinks, shelves and other home necessities.

For seniors living at Place Dubourg, social entertain-ment is only an elevator ride away.

“A lot of families are glad their parents have a place to live where they can have a social circle of people their

own age,” Williams said. Residents are currently

preparing for the “Senior Olympics,” an opportunity to participate in beanbag tosses and putt-putt golf, among other lighthearted games.

Social activities also include an upcoming senior fashion show, monthly birth-day celebrations, bingo, weekly Bible study and Mass.

At least once a month, seniors go on outings to res-taurants, the theater or other attractions, the most recent

being a trip to Jazz Fest. Transportation to doc-

tors’ appointments is offered to residents every Monday and Thursday, and grocery store outings are every other Wednesday. Those with vehi-cles may leave the facility at any time.

Residents bring their own money on trips, Williams said, though Place Dubourg occasionally holds fundrais-ers to buy materials for craft days.

Rita Andre, a 21-year resi-

dent of Place Dubourg, said she’s always enjoyed partici-pating in dining room activi-ties and meeting people who live in the complex.

Out of more than 100 res-idents, Andre has lived at Place Dubourg the longest. For her, moving in was a path to independence.

“I wanted a place of my own,” Andre said. “I told my brother-in-law, I can’t live in a suitcase and keep jumping from house to house to stay with people.”

She joked she’ll never leave Place Dubourg unless Williams kicks her out.

“It’s a nice place to spend your golden years,” Andre said. “I can’t ask for any-thing more.”

Place Dubourg is one of several apartment com-plexes offered through New Orleans-based housing orga-nization Christopher Homes.

For more information, call 985-652-1981 or visit Place Dubourg to pick up an appli-cation.
