LITERACY

ANIMAL MASH UPS! Create a ‘mash up’ animal in 10 minutes.

What should I do

Get ready...

Authorfy (the website linked below) has daily 10 minute challenges set by well-known children’s

authors. The challenge set by Sibeal Pounder sounds really good fun!

You can use the video to hear instructions and also have a timer for the 10 minutes. To be ready, you

will need:

• paper

• pens/pencils/coloured pens

Take the challenge

Watch the video challenge set by Sibeal Pounder (you will need to scroll down the page to find her

challenge): https://authorfy.com/10minutechallenges/.

Take the challenge and create a mashup animal!

Name it…

Now write the name of your animal:

• Include the names of the two animals you have mixed up, like Sibeal did.

• Sound talk the phonemes to help you to work out how to write it.

Take a look at the animal mashups in the pictures below: have a go at thinking of ideas for their

names and use your sound talk to work out how to write them.

Share your work …

How might you share your work with your friends and your teacher(s)? Can you film yourself

holding up a drawing of it and reading the name, or take photographs, then email them?l

(Remember to ask your adult before going online!)d help me

Change it up!

You can watch the video more than once: don’t worry too much about the time limit.

1. A) Create some more mashup animals and write their names.

2. B) Write a description of your mashup animal: What are they like? Where do they live? What

do they do? otes for parents and teachers

There are lots of 10 minute challenges on the Authorfy website. Some are more appropriate for older

children but lots of them are worth trying out, and new ones are added every day.

Reading Comprehension

Each week you will have a reading comprehension to complete. These reading comprehensions are designed in a way to match our guided reading sessions in class. These should not be completed alone as they require discussion and guidance from an adult.

The questions that you will see follow VIPERS, like we use in class.

V= VOCABULARY ( finding the meaning of words in context, other words that mean the same thing) I= INFERENCE ( 'reading between the lines' and using clues from the text, without the author actually telling us.) P= PREDICTION ( suggesting what might/could happen) E= EXPLAIN ( giving details about what has happened) R= RETRIEVE ( finding the answers from the text) S= SEQUENCE ( the order of events in the story)

( The answers are there for you at the end, and you and your grown up can check through when you have finished).

PSHE

As it is Pride month, we would like you to create something that celebrates diversity. Diversity means that there are lots of different kinds of people. It is our differences that make the world an interesting place. Everyone is unique but we also have lots of things in common. Whatever our similarities and differences, we should treat everyone equally and with respect.

This week, we would like you to create something that celebrates this diversity - the things that make us unique. You could think about the similarities and differences in your own family or the people that you know. You could think about your friends and what makes them unique. You could do some research about other cultures, countries or religions and share what you find out.

You can present this in lots of different ways, such as creating a picture of your family, a poster, presentation, video or by writing a letter or poem to a friend. Whatever you create, we would love to see it so please send them to us. Parents - we have attached some videos that might help your child to think and understand diversity. Please watch these videos before you watch with them with your child and look at the ones on the side so that you are aware of and happy with the content. These videos can be find by following this link and scrolling down: https://homelands-primary-school.secure-primarysite.net/pshe-3/
