PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: WELCOME BACK!WELCOME BACK!WELCOME BACK!
I hope everyone has had a good summer and got a
li le vaca on me in. During July and August, I have
no ced a lot of tourism on the Central Coast. I spent
some me in Santa Barbara and was amazed at the
amount of Europeans shopping, dining and walking
on State Street. The beaches have been packed with
all walks of life, local and visitors alike. At Farmers
Market in SLO, the Poly students have been replaced
by families from Fresno. The Central Coast has been
discovered as a good place to vaca on.
Now, as Summer slowly changes to Fall, the Summer
tourists will be going home. It is me to get back to
work, school or whatever you do. I love this me of
year. The weather in September and October is great
on the Central Coast; it is always very hot and sunny.
It is also me for APWA to con nue our programs.
Recently the Execu ve Board met to plan out the
upcoming year and I would like to share our plans
with you.
The goals of our upcoming year are:
1. To spread our monthly mee ngs around our two
county area;
2. To involve the Cal Poly students more;
3. To increase the amounts of funds we put toward
student scholarship/internships.
We will kick off the year on September 10th with a
very dynamic and interes ng program about how to
make change in your life called “The Changing Point”.
Ian Hill will provide us with the inspira on, tools and
techniques to make change for the good of ourselves,
our families and our community. Please watch the
video link a ached and sign up for this program. It
will be held at Shepard Hall in the Santa Maria Library
from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and will include lunch. Sign
up informa on is on Page 1 of this newsle er.
If you have ideas for future mee ngs, please contact
an APWA Board Member with and let them know. We
are here to serve you and appreciate your
involvement.
Our veteran Awards Chairperson of many years, Steve
Orosz, has moved to Arizona to work for the City of
Presco . Steve did a great job running the en re
program along with help from his wife. We have
found a new Awards Chairperson in Brianna Daniels.
Brianna is the Branch Manager for Penfield & Smith’s
Santa Maria office. She will be assisted by our
Newsle er Chairperson, Aimee Wright, Marke ng
Coordinator for Penfield & Smith. We are pleased
Brianna has stepped up to help out. This transi on
comes with another change—Awards will be moving
to January. More info on that coming soon...
We are making changes to our Student Scholarship
Program. We will be partnering with two agencies,
one in the San Luis Obispo area and one in the Santa
Barbara area. We will be accep ng applica ons for
internships at the two agencies. APWA and the
agency will then interview the candidates together
and select one to work for each agency. APWA will
put up $3,000 for a por on of the pay for each intern.
More details to come. If you are interested in more
informa on, or your agency wants to be involved,
please contact Larry Kraemer at Cannon Corp.
I look forward to another successful year of APWA!
