Sixteenth Sunday Ordinary Time

Whenever we hear this Gospel, our natural inclination often is sympathetic to Martha. From Martha’s perspec-tive, Mary is simply a lazy sister sitting and avoiding her responsibility to be hospitable to their guests. We must understand that hospitality was important to the culture of that time, which reflected the blessings of God in their family. Martha expects Jesus to reprimand Mary. She is surprised by Jesus breaking cultural expectation and hu-man sensibility. Jesus’ perspective is much greater than Martha’s viewpoint. He sees as God sees both our actions and in-ternal disposition. Martha is being weighed down with the labor of being hospitable; however, she does not re-spond to her need by asking for help from Mary to Mary. Rather, she goes to Jesus wanting him to put Mary in her place. We can easily feel and understand the sibling rival-ry between Martha and Mary. Essentially, if Jesus was to tell Mary “get up and help you sister”, she would have been publicly embarrassed, which seemingly is Martha’s justice. How often do we fall into that same trap? We are sometimes like Martha asking for punishment and re-venge under the guise of compassion and justice. The right words and request is made; however, the intention is devious. Rarely, are physical actions isolated in-and-of them-selves always objectively wrong. Often, it is the intention and purpose of an action which determines whether there is sin or no sin. The criterion of a mortal sin is determined by whether the action is of a serious nature, there is full understanding, and a complete choice is made. Two of the criterion is based on the internal dis-position of the person. It is for that reason Jesus chal-lenges Martha “there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part.” At this moment Mary is wholly focused on accepting the blessing of Christ with her ac-tions and intentions. We need to continually reflect on ourselves, do we seek the one thing needed? Do we seek to know and choose God every day, within ourselves and in our ac-tions? We all live imperfectly, however in taking up the motto to effect continuous improvement in ourselves for Christ we will “restore all things in Christ” (St. Pope Pius X). Even though we have failure, the Father will make up the difference and get us to where we need to be throughout our entire being

Cada vez que escuchamos este Evangelio, nuestra inclinación natural a menudo simpatiza con Marta. Desde la perspectiva de Marta, María es simplemente una hermana perezosa sentada y evitando su responsabilidad de ser hospitalaria con sus huéspedes. Debemos entend-er que la hospitalidad era importante para la cultura de ese tiempo, que reflejaba las bendiciones de Dios en su familia. Marta espera que Jesús reprenda a María. Ella está sorprendida de que Jesús rompa las expectativas culturales y la sensibilidad humana. La perspectiva de Jesús es mucho mayor que el punto de vista de Marta. Él ve como Dios ve nuestras acciones y nuestra disposición interna. Marta está siendo agobiada con el trabajo de ser hospitalaria; sin embargo, ella no responde a su necesidad pidiendo ayuda de María a María. Más bien, ella se dirige a Jesús y le pide que ponga a María en su lugar. Podemos sentir y comprender fácil-mente la rivalidad entre hermanos entre Marta y María. Esencialmente, si Jesús le dijera a María "levántate y ayuda a tu hermana", se habría avergonzado públicamen-te, lo que aparentemente es la justicia de Marta. ¿Con qué frecuencia caemos en esa misma trampa? A veces somos como Marta que pide castigo y venganza bajo el disfraz de la compasión y la justicia. Se hacen las palabras correctas y la petición; Sin embargo, la intención es desviada. En raras ocasiones, las acciones físicas aisladas en sí mismas siempre son objetivamente erróneas. A menudo, es la intención y el propósito de una acción lo que determina si hay pecado o no pecado. El criterio de un pecado mortal está determinado por si la acción es de naturaleza seria, existe una comprensión completa y se hace una elección completa. Dos de los criterios se basan en la disposición interna de la persona. Es por esa razón que Jesús desafía a Marta: “solo se nece-sita una cosa. María ha elegido la mejor parte ”. En este momento, María está totalmente centrada en aceptar la bendición de Cristo con sus acciones e intenciones. Necesitamos reflexionar continuamente sobre nosotros mismos, ¿buscamos la única cosa necesaria? ¿Buscamos conocer y elegir a Dios todos los días, dentro de nosotros mismos y en nuestras acciones? Todos vivi-mos de manera imperfecta, sin embargo, al tomar el lema para lograr una mejora continua en nosotros mismos para Cristo, “restauraremos todas las cosas en Cristo” (San Papa Pío X). Los Siete Grandes Mitos del Sacramento del Matrimonio y el Divorcio por el Diácono Gre-gorio (el último):

Mito numero siete:

Las anulaciones son difíciles de conseguir, cuestan mucho dinero y no deben permitirse de todos modos, ya que son como los divorcios católicos. Esto definitivamente no es cierto.

Según la Ley Canónica, se alienta a los católicos a solici-tar la anulación de su matrimonio eclesiástico si creen que hubo un defecto grave en su compromiso matrimonial original para invalidar su matrimonio. Esto a veces es difícil de determinar. Esta es la razón por la cual la iglesia es tan cuidadosa al revisar cada caso con cuidado y en oración. Pero sabemos que algunos matrimonios en reali-dad no eran válidos y en tales casos esto puede ser probado por los hechos. Y el otorgamiento de una anu-lación no afecta la legitimidad de ningún hijo del matrimo-nio. En general, el procesamiento de una petición de anu-lación normalmente toma aproximadamente un año. Insto a cualquier persona que se encuentre en un escenario de matrimonio irregular a que llame y haga una cita con un sacerdote o diácono para discutir su situación. Las cosas pueden ser resueltas. Myth number seven:

Annulments are hard to get, cost a lot of money, and shouldn’t be allowed anyway since they are like Catholic divorces. This is definitely not true.

Under Canon Law, Catholics are encouraged to petition for an annulment of their church marriage if they believe that there was a serious flaw in their original marital commitment so as to render their marriage invalid. This is sometimes hard to determine. This is why the church is so painstaking in reviewing each case carefully and prayerfully. But we know that some marriages were not in fact valid and in such cases this can be proven by the facts. And the granting of an annulment does not affect the legitimacy of any children from the marriage. Generally, processing an annulment petition normally takes about one year. I urge anyone who is in an irregular marriage scenario to call and make an appointment with a priest or deacon to discuss your situation. Things can be worked out. Your spiritual welfare is the number one priority of our church community. If you are genuinely interested in seeking a solution, remember that nothing is impossible with God. For God loves us and wants us to reach the kingdom of heaven if we in turn love him and serve him in this world. This is his purpose and plan for us. God has marked us out for salvation. This is the reality of our Baptism.

Today’s readings speak of

hospitality. Abraham, who

cheerfully did for his guests

all that desert hospitality

required, was rewarded with

his heart’s desire---a son.

Martha also busied herself

with all the details of hospi-

tality, but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheer-

ful or a grudging giver?
