Dear Friends,

As I write this I am feeling the challenge of many things “left undone” that need to be done, of people that I really need to phone or write (or text), and in the midst of this there has been a death in the family. In pausing to breathe deeply, I find myself reminded to go placidly amidst the haste. In researching I have found that the poem, Desiderata by Max Ehrmann, is in the public domain. So, I am sharing it with you:

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they

too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be

greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere

life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as

the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark

imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the

stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is

unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to

be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy

confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham,

drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Wishing you the peace that passes all understanding, Pastor Hollis

Sunday School:

The sounds of laughter and fun can be heard drifting down the hall during the 10:00 service as the kids learn about the parables of Jesus through crafts, songs, games and storytelling! This month we learned the Parable of the Talents, the Prodigal Son, and the Mustard Seed.

If you would like to get involved with Sunday School, new volunteers are always welcome!

Please call the church office at 970-242-3293 and talk to Becky!

I want to thank everyone for their help in making the sixth annual Spirit of the Valley 5k– Run, Walk, ‘n Roll a success. Whether you were an event sponsor, an athlete sponsor, or a volunteer– this event could not happen without you. I had the honor of being invited to rock climb at the Grand Valley Climbing gym this year with the veterans from the Recreational Therapy program. It was a great reminder that thanks to this event the Recreational Therapy program is able to get disabled veterans into the community all year long, and Cathy Do-nahoe will continue to get our support for the year. Not only is the 5k able to fund these great programs– it’s also an opportunity for community members of all abilities and activity levels to enjoy a day of competition, food, and music. Many thanks to Bill Shannon, Lizard Analytical Laboratories, for being this year’s premier sponsor, and to Nicki Inman for assisting all year and leading the race next year.

THANK YOU FOR

HELPING TO MAKE THIS A SUCCESS-

Everyone had a great time at the Chili Cook-Off! We were blessed with perfect fall weather for the event, the Bronco game was broadcasted, and the thirteen chili entries were delicious. Sue Emmerson did a fantastic job decorating- her years of working on this event showed in how efficiently she had the event organized to get judges through the lines quickly.

Congratulations to the three winners: Monroe Wren (mild), Jaime Galbasini (spicy), and Holly Smith (vegetarian)

Outreach Committee Update

On Monday, 25 September, the Outreach Team packed up the clothing so generously donated by the congregation and schools throughout the valley (Broadway Elementary, Dos Rios Elementary, Wingate Elementary School, Orchard Mesa Middle School) and headed off to Candlewood Park on 32 Road for its 2nd Annual Clothing Give-Away. It was great timing! With the weather turning colder the tubs of fleeces, jackets, along with a wide range of boys and girls clothing was greatly appreciated by the residents. The staff at Candlewood Park expects over 800 folks, many of whom are in great need, to stop by over the course of the next two weeks. Any clothing not distributed to residents will be donated to Catholic Outreach. Thanks again so much for your generosity!

Blessing of the Animals Wednesday, October 4th

6pm at the Pavilion

We will gather to bless the animals in honor of St. Francis. All animals welcome! This celebration is also in memory of The Rev. John C. Millen, a great lover of animals. We will begin by honoring and remembering animals that have passed on, and then ask God’s blessing on each animal individually. Friends and neighbors are welcome, of course!

Pictured is a lone structure with its protruding stone just outside of Gateway, CO. It dominates all around it and shows off its majesty with both color and size. It was taken on a day trip to Gateway in February, 2017.

An Author Among Us Lyn Fraser is a humble soul, and like many at St. Matt’s doesn't often “blow her own horn.” We have a chance to do that for her. Lyn Fraser’s 4th book has just been published, and we are launching it here at St. Matthew’s. Let’s all come out in support!

Following the book launch, the women’s group WWJD will meet for dinner. All women are invited. Sign up at church or email Sue Van Voorhees at [email protected]

Stewardship

Join Hands!

We are coming together to support each other by pledging our support for St. Matt's for 2018. Your pledge is what allows our church to be here for all of us, and even for people we haven't yet met! Let's join together to keep our church vital!. Just fill out a pledge card and drop it off at the office or in the offertory plate, or mail it in. We'll bless the pledge cards on November 5th, when we celebrate All Saints.

Letter from St. Matt’s Missionary in the Dominican

Summer is always an intense time for me. The heat is tremendous and with air conditioning, a very limited commodity, it takes its toll. I remember flexibility being one of the characteristics that Peace Corps was interested in for potential volunteers. It seems to be the same for missionaries. This summer term I started with

2 classes and ended with 4. While I enjoyed the students and the classes, both additions were new to me so required more preparation and an extra day and a half in the capital every week. The pictures are students learning about plyometrics and my group in the clinical

rotation on our last day as a group. The director of the program recently left on maternity leave, though she will be checking in here and there. Please pray for her and her first child, as well as all the professors as we head into a new term the beginning of September without our director helping to put out fires that inevitably crop up.

A few years ago, God granted me the opportunity to stay in housing at the seminary during my nights in the capital, and I therefore had the pleasure of sharing a bit in the community

life with the seminarians. They were in their first year of studies then and we shared dinner and Morning Prayer regularly that year. Recently I had the distinct pleasure of joining them at their graduation. Their ordination will take place soon. Please join me in giving thanks to God for these hard-working servants who are heading into the world to spread God’s word and love to God’s people! May God bless, guide and strengthen their ministries and their lives!

Thank you for your support for this ministry! May you see God at work in your daily life!
