“AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PARISHIONERS OF ST. JAMES” Dear Parishioners,
Over the past two weeks since returning from my summer vacation, several people have spoken to me about the shameful news of the latest allegations of sexual abuse by members of the clergy in a report published by the Attorney General’s Office in the State of Pennsylvania this past August. I too, was saddened, pained and disturbed by this broken trust within our Catholic Church.
I wanted to write something to all of you at this time, to address this deep wound that has affected all members of our universal Catholic Church community.
One case of child abuse by a priest is by far too many. Following the revelation of abuse in 2002, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, along with dioceses throughout the country, created the Office for the Protection of Children and Young People. Due to its work, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of reported occurrences of child abuse by the clergy in more recent years. This is also due partially to the psychological vetting of candidates for the priesthood among other procedures. While we have seen the benefits of the new policies and procedures being followed, we still have a long way to go. We must constantly learn and adapt to even newer procedures. We must never let down our guard regarding the protection of our children and young people.
I think that we need to clarify what we mean by “clericalism”, as there are those who are suggesting that “clericalism” is the major cause of this problem. If we are talking about "clericalism" as the misuse and abuse of power and position by the clergy, that the priest or bishop is always right, and that their position places them above their people and the law, then I am in total agreement. That is clericalism at its worst. The priesthood is a call to radical service of others in imitation of Jesus. It is an incredible privilege but it does not make us better than those we serve. While we have all become a "priestly" people by virtue of baptism, there is a difference between the priesthood of the faithful and that of the ordained priest.
Timothy O’Malley states clearly in a recent publication: “Clericalism is the abuse of one’s priestly office for the acquisition of material and political power. Clericalism surfaces in parishes where poorly trained clergy wreak havoc on lay staffs. It is found in priests who believe that ordination also comes with the gift of all wisdom and insight rather than configuring the young man more closely to the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. Clericalism is exercised in seminaries where young men are trained to accept the capricious use of power. It is found in seminaries where young men are taught to be distrustful of women, of anyone who is not a “cleric,” because they are not like us. Clericalism is ripe among bishops who long to climb out of this small diocese to a major see, to a spot on a Vatican continued on page four

Congregation, where they could be named a Cardinal, a prince of the Church.” (Timothy O’Malley, Catholic Life Journal, August 2018.) In seeking a cause for these heinous acts, some have suggested the elimination of priestly celibacy, permitting priests to marry, and the ordination of women. Pope Francis, along with his recent predecessors, has declared that women may not be admitted to the priesthood, although he has opened the possibility of "studying" the question of admitting women to the diaconate. We'll see. These may be addressed in the broader position of the future of our church as we know it. They do not fall under my understanding of “clericalism”.
There are others who insist that the problem with the evil acts of pedophilia among Catholic clergy is due to those priests who have a homosexual orientation. In the work of the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center which has “a proven history of helping kids and families”, “Dr. Gene Abel, a researcher in the field of sexual violence for over twenty-five years, wrote an article for the average parent in Redbook magazine to take the knowledge he gained in doing over 100 scientific articles to provide specific warning signs for parents and caregivers. In this article, he explicitly states that most cases of boys being molested are attributed to heterosexuals.” I ask you to join me as we pray for the healing of the many victims and their families hurt by the sexual abuse by members of the clergy, and that we do everything that is within our power to offer them the assistance that they need.
I also ask that together we never give up on Christ and His Church. Jesus will never give up on us. He loves us and will never leave us. Our trust in Jesus must sustain us as a universal church through this time of challenge, and purification. We cannot let Satan triumph. But we must pray. Bishop Barres has requested that we pray for “…the reform, purification and sanctification of the church in all areas and in all of her members.” I am so grateful for the support and encouragement that some have given me, and my brother priests during this difficult time. Be assured that I, as your pastor and our clergy, will continue to work with you, pray with you and serve you as good and faithful priests. Respectfully,
Rev. John M. Derasmo

One of the things
the family has as its mission is to
educate. By fulfilling its mission
to educate, the family plays an
irreplaceable role and advances the
common good of a society. (See, Compendium of
the Social Doctrine of
the Catholic Church,
Paragraph No. 238)
Welcome Back!
Taking a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms
around it he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as
this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives
not me but the One who sent me.” Mark 9:36-37
These last lines from today’s Gospel are fitting as we await the
children for the first week of classes! We see God in each and
every one of them, and we are ready to receive them. We’ve been
working all summer in preparation for this coming year and can’t
wait to see their smiling faces.
Our staff: Gina Drost, Marianne Mirkow, Julie Rodetis, and
Gloria Summerville, along with the many volunteers and
catechists here at St. James all work together to bring our parish
the best programs and do all we can to help the children learn and
grow in their relationship with Christ. We are proud and excited to
partner with our families to help them develop a deeper
relationship with Jesus.
We offer the following prayer and ask you to join us in praying for
our families:
Prayer for Family Commitment
Loving and merciful Father, who instituted the family as an
instrument of your fruitful love and raised it to be a sacrament of
the love of your Son for his Church, send forth your Holy Spirit to
forgive us for our sinful failures, to heal the personal and social
wounds that afflict us, to bring consolation to the vulnerable
among us, and to enable us to reach out in compassionate care to
all those families in need. Make possible within us and for us what
only you can do. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Learning from Saint Teresa of Calcutta
This month, we celebrated the feast day of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She was such an influential woman who touched the lives of so many people… and continues to do so even now! She
reminds us that we are all called to be the Hands of Christ’s Mercy in our communities today.
We need not be in the streets of Calcutta to do good for our brothers and sisters in Christ. We can help our community here on Long Island through the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal.
Your gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal will help more than 600,000 of our sisters and
brothers receive support and assistance from the funds shared through the CMA each year. It is rare that just one person or one parish could touch this many lives. The CMA brings us beyond the
individual, the group and the parish and unites us as one Church of Long Island. Saint Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is Stewardship in Action!
To make a donation, you can also visit https://www.drvc.org/CMA
