“AND WHAT SHOULD WE DO?” While Advent is not considered a “penitential season” like Lent, we are challenged with the call to change our lives as a response to our belief in Jesus as we await his return in glory. As a result of the preaching of John the Baptist found in this weekend’s Gospel, the crowd, tax collectors and even soldiers ask John the Baptist, “What are we to do?” John’s preaching was clear, “Prepare the way of the Lord!” We are confronted with the same challenge. It is not enough to say that we believe, we need to show clear indications that we believe. As Matthew Warner wrote in his book, “Messy and Foolish,” “It’s one thing to profess. . .a belief, it’s another to let it transform your life.” Because you and I believe in Jesus and his teachings, we take them to heart, allowing them to transform our lives. I started the season of Advent sharing with you a quote from Thomas Merton in which he defines part of the reason for Advent: “the Advent mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not yet Christ.” This coming week we will have additional opportunities to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confession. It is so important to prepare for the celebration of this sacrament through the proper examination of our conscience beforehand. Additional times include: this Monday, December 17
th, from
7:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, immediately after the 12:10 Mass for as long as people come. ************************************************************** Congratulations, Fr. Aaron! This Monday, December 17
th,
Fr. Aaron will be celebrating his 75
th Birthday. Please join me in
sending Fr. Aaron Birthday greetings. Happy 75
th Birthday, Fr. Aaron!
May you receive many blessings on your birthday and throughout the coming year!
“THANK YOU, EVERYONE!” Our Young Vincentians and the members of the Boy Scouts would like to express their gratitude to all those who donated canned goods for their food drive or purchased Christmas Wreaths. I am grateful to the Young Vincentians for being mindful of those needing our help at this time. I am also grateful to the Scouts for the services they extend to our parish throughout the year.
I am also grateful to all those who took a tag or more from our “Giving Tree.” The gift cards you donate to our church at this time truly provide help to families so that they can have a wonderful Christmas. They want me to express their gratitude to you.

St. Francis of Assisi had a special devotion to
the Child Jesus, and he is credited with creating the first nativity scene
on Christmas Eve of the year 1223. It is believed that St.
Francis was first inspired by this idea after visiting the historical place of
Christ’s birth on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land—the humble stable
in a Bethlehem cave. It is likely this event which deepened his devotion
to the Child Jesus, who was born into the world in such poverty, humility,
and simplicity. In fact, Francis founded
his new religious Order to imitate these very virtues.
What’s with the Pink Candle? We refer to the Third Sunday in Advent as Gaudete Sunday because the antiphon for the mass begins “Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete” meaning “Rejoice in the Lord always: again I say rejoice.” While much of the penitential nature of the season has been lost in favor of hopeful expectation, some of the readings still do sound this note. The Third Sunday has traditionally been a respite from the penitential themes of Advent emphasizing instead the joy of the coming of the Lord. Thus many view the pink candle as emphasizing joy, incites us to rejoicing, and bids us prepare to meet the coming Savior with prayers and supplication and thanksgiving, The Gospel reading today gives us the words of St. John Baptist, who warns us that the Lamb of God is even now in our midst, though we appear to know Him not. The spirit of the Office and Liturgy all through Advent is one of expectation and preparation for the Christmas feast as well as for the second coming of Christ, and the penitential exercises suitable to that spirit are suspended on Gaudete Sunday , in order to symbolize that joy and gladness in the Promised Redemption which should never be absent from the heart of the faithful.
