News of Great Joy:
Daily Readings for
Advent
“OKAY, LET’S TALK ADVENT”
Advent is one of those sacred seasons we observe, which is an expression of our Catholic identity. It is an important season that can easily be lost in the midst of celebrating Christmas too early. After all, who appears at the end of the Thanksgiving Day Parade ushering in the “Holiday” Season? Why, it’s Santa Claus! So, for the weeks following Thanksgiving the world is in the Christmas (Holiday) Season, which “ends” on Christmas Day. But not us! We are celebrating Advent –a time of prayerful waiting and preparation. What we await is the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise that he will “come again in glory.” This is the hope of the Church expressed in the prayers at Mass for the first part of Advent. Is it your hope as well? What are some signs that we are celebrating Christmas too early? Bear with me now and at least consider what I am sharing with you.
1) Sending Christmas Cards to arrive during the Advent Season and not during the Christmas Season. This year, the Christmas Season begins with the Vigil of Christmas, December 24th, and ends on January 8th, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
2) Holding Christmas parties during Advent instead of holding them during the Christmas Season.
3) Decorating your home for Christmas too early in the Advent Season instead of waiting until a time closer to Christmas Day. One of my greatest childhood memories was how our city apartment seemed to be transformed into Christmas overnight when my folks would decorate after we kids went to bed on Christmas Eve.
Might I suggest that we all take a small step in moving in this direction? We are not going to change how we have been doing things overnight but perhaps we can take a simple step this year like writing out Christmas cards as usual but placing them in the mail on Monday, December 18th, or even later, so your greetings arrives during the Christmas Season. I think we need to reclaim our holidays and celebrate them in a way that is consistent with the spiritual and liturgical time we keep. You will notice a significant difference between how our church is decorated during most of the month of December as compared to how stores are decorated during the same time period. Well, these are just some thoughts to consider as we make “spiritual preparation” for Christmas this year. Even a simple step in changing how we observe Advent can make a big difference. Try it!

What’s happening in
Faith Formation?
This past week our Level Eight students learned about Family.
Families come in all shapes and sizes and each is unique. They
learned that we rely on our families as our first and most important
teachers, to instruct us in all we know. It is by the example of our
family that we learn right from wrong, life skills and our values, and that
our family life prepares us for life in the world. They learned that each
family is its own small community, where each member has responsibili-
ties and expectations, but sometime we also have misunderstandings.
They learned that there are consequences to not following the rules,
but that we have the beauty of forgiveness as well. As we focus on
our Christmas preparations let’s think about the Holy Family and
how they prepared for the Birth of Jesus. How did they ready
themselves so that they could welcome this new life into their family?
What do you think they did verses what you’re doing?
Question of the Week: Are you prepared for the coming of the long
awaited Messiah?
Advent Wreath Blessing: Week Two:
The first and second purple candles are lit, and the prayer is said
each night.
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach
repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to
heed their warnings and forsake our sins that we may greet with joy
the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
