from pastor dennis “Prayer is for

Amateurs”

I love what Earl Palmer writes about prayer in his book, Prayer Between Friends – Cultivating our Friendship with God:

“Prayer is for amateurs: it is not an art form that has more power in it if the pray-er learns a language of relation-ship between ordinary human beings and the Lord of Life.” (1)

Whatever gave us the idea that prayer was for professionals? (Insert “ministers,” “priests” and “rabbis.”) And whoever had the idea that prayer required a special language that sounded like the “original” King James Version of the Bible?

Can you imagine the shock you would feel if you were a dad and your teenage son came up to you and asked:

“O great and benevolent father, hallowed and es-teemed, knower of all things, generous provider of my shelter and daily bread, author of family order and peace, kind and glorious ruler of the house, would you please lend me your car, if it be your will?”

I think if that happened to you, you would probably think your son was a bit weird and you’d suspect he was up to something questionable.

When we speak to our Heavenly Father in prayer, it should be as normal as a child speaks to his or her dad. Prayer is simply the language of relationship, the conversation between a child and a father -- whether it’s verbal or nonverbal, formal or in-formal, public or private. It does not require a special lan-guage, it doesn’t demand a certain place or a specific posture, and there are no special formulas. Furthermore, there isn’t a single topic “off limits.” As a child of God we can pray any-where, any time, any place, about anything. Anything!

A lady once asked G. Campbell Morgan, “Do you think we ought to pray about even the little things in life?” Dr. Morgan, in his typical British manner, replied, “Madam, can you think of anything in your life that is big to God?”

It’s amazing how many misconceptions there are about prayer. Here are just a few of the distorted approaches: (2)

The Aladdin’s Lamp Approach, which views God as a celestial genie. All you need to do is rub God the right way and He’ll grant you your wish.

The Spare Tire Approach, to be used only in emergencies.

The Blue Book Approach, which views God as a college profes-

sor who grades on the number of pages you fill in the book. The more words you use the more likely God is to respond.

The Monte Hall Approach: “God…let’s make a deal. If You an-swer my prayer, I’ll….”

The Stained Glass Approach, which requires “right” formulas and especially the “Thee’s” and “Thou’s” of Elizabethan Eng-lish.

And then there’s The Wrestling Match Approach, in which the pray-er forcefully reminds a reluctant God of His obligations and promises.

None of these approaches come anywhere close to what God intended. He wants to be in relationship with you and me. And he wants that relationship to be open and simple and honest.

Prayer is for amateurs -- which means all of us can participate!

At Covenant, we desire to extend the knowledge and benefits of Christ to the people and places God has given us… we have

heard this and seen it a millions times at church… however… what does it mean?

It means, we share about Him through others, we take the precious opportunity to share our stories of faith and strength, weakness, insecurity, love, real life with others and testify how God has been there for us… even and especially through the

rough and embarrassing times. To share your story, contact Tricia Davies at [email protected].

During the month of April, the Pastoral Search Team conducted Skype video interviews, reference checks, and listened to online sermons for our top three candidates. After the interviews and fur-ther discussion, we ranked the candidates 1,2,3. Our next step is to conduct an in-person inter-view with our top ranking candidate in May according to the EPC guidelines interview process. WORSHIP SCHEDULE 5/06|The Narrow Way

Matthew 7: 13-20

How to detect the lies of our world. The importance of entering the narrow gate and of watching out for those who teach otherwise. This is a Communion Sunday.

5/07|Makin the Choice of a Lifetime Matthew 7: 21-29

Understanding the radical choice between obedience and disobedience and how Jesus calls us to an unconditional commitment of mind, will and life to his teaching. The foolish and the wise, the sand and the rock – to the casual observer the houses look the same but their difference is in the foundations which are not seen. On what foundation is your life built?

5/20|Pentecost Sunday Acts 2: 1-21

A festival service with the voice of many languages as the Holy Spirit fell on the 120 persons gathered in the Upper Room and the church was born.

Thursday, May 10 11:30am | St. Andrew’s Hall | $5 lunch

Wayne Slaven | [email protected]

or 714.363.3027

Our speaker is Douglas Westfall, NOTED HISTORIAN, AUTHOR,

SPEAKER,AND PUBLISHER of over 100 books.

Sailing first class on the Titanic with family, a young man survives alone, and tells of the heroic efforts of the Captain and the crew.

A graphic and thrilling account of the sinking of the greatest floating pal-ace ever built, carrying down to watery graves more than 1,500 souls. Read over 50 first person accounts, view the photographs and drawings of the times, and see the list of the dead.

This is a reproduction issue from 1912. Nearly a century ago, the great American-owned steamship Titanic, sank on it's maiden voyage from

England to America. With severe damage, insufficient lifeboats, and no help on the horizon, the great ship sank in a matter of hours taking well more than half of the 2,200 people to the bottom. Only rescue in the early morning hours saved the survivors. The largest ship in the world, The Titanic, sank off the coast of Nova Scotia in the early morning of April 15th, 1912. Less than 700 survivors were picked up the next day by the HMS Carpathia, the only one of six ships in the area to come to their rescue.

Enjoy a super-fun day beginning with a delicious lunch, warm fellowship, opportunity baskets,

and special entertainment by LIFEsong vocal ensemble from Vanguard University.

The Women’s Fellowship invites all women and children to join them and enjoy the musical talent of the LIFEsong ensemble

from Vanguard University of Southern California who will entertain us at our annual Spring Fling Luncheon. LIFEsong is a pre-

mier PR group that features eight beautiful voices dedicated to touching lives through excellent music and worship ministry,

and travels to local churches, schools, community events and recreating events for the university. This is an outstanding stu-

dent-led ensemble, with Joshua Martin as the student director, and Joni Y. Prado, DMA, Associate Professor of Music, as the

faculty advisor.

The LIFEsong ensemble typically sings contemporary Christian songs and worship music, and also sings secular music from

Broadway musicals and some pop tunes. They are very versatile, so we are in for a wonderful musical treat.

Also, one of the highlights of the day is the chance to win one of the Opportunity Baskets, and there will be many to choose

from.

Session Updates by Elder Doug Bickham

On behalf of Session, thank you for your continued prayers and feedback. We appreciate the many emails we have received from the congregation sharing your thoughts, ideas and con-cerns. Please feel free to continue to email us at [email protected].

On April 24 we continued our discussion from the book Grow-ing Young by Kara Powell, Jake Mulder, and Brad Griffin. The focus this month was Chapter 6 on “Prioritize Young People (and Families) Everywhere,” which discussed the importance of prioritizing young people and families in the church not just in terms of programs and resources but also in building rela-tionships.

If you see a young person or family on Sunday morning do you welcome them and make them feel like they are truly a part of our church “family”? What if they have long hair (or short hair) or tattoos or are wearing a hat, shorts and a T-shirt? Are you willing to set aside some of your own prejudices and wor-ship preferences for the sake of reaching young people for Christ? Do you try to develop relationships with younger members of our congregation? These are all important ques-tions to ask ourselves if we as a church are going to make reaching a younger generation a priority.

To learn more about “growing young” we encourage everyone in the congregation to participate in this study as we seek God’s direction on how we as a church can better connect and retain young people. The next study session will be on Tues-day, May 29, at 7pm in St. Andrew’s Hall. If you would like to purchase the book please contact Martha in the church office at [email protected], or 714.998.6650.

Please continue to lift-up in prayer our Pastoral Search Team as they search for a new Senior Pastor. Please also pray that God will reveal to us the new shepherd which he has already chosen to lead Covenant in the future.

Finally, please pray for Pastor Dennis and the rest of our won-derful staff as they continue to serve us, encourage us and support us during this transition period. And please continue to pray that God will give Session unity, guidance and wisdom as we lead Covenant through this transitional period.

On behalf of Session, our prayer is that Covenant will be widely known for extending the knowledge and benefits of Christ to the people and places that God has given us.

Freedom is the most cherished of all Ameri-can principles. It is the dream that launched the birth of our nation, and the prayer we all hold for our children's future. It is the hope by which we live, and the cause for which so many have died. Freedom is, quite simply, who we are. Created by Deborah Craig-Claar and David T. Clydesdale, Freedom is a cross-generational musical that combines narrations with inspiring original numbers and patriotic favorites.

Led by Darren Huntting, Musical Director at Covenant, this choral worship experience will be spiritually fulfilling, participatory and engaging for all ages.

We are all powered up and excited about our Castle Quest-themed Boosterthon Fun Run Fundraiser! We introduced this new, EXCITING, interactive fundraiser on May 1. Kids are going to love it! They are already intrigued by all of the decorations and fun touches they have encountered around the campus.

Our two-week Fun Run FUNdraiser Program will culminate in a Fun Run on May 10th. The greatest thing about this is that family and friends anywhere in the world can support our school by giving pledges toward the number of laps your students will run by donating online at funrun.com. Checks payable to CCS.

Not only does this promise to be a FUN program, but we’re so excited to raise funds for additional classroom, technology and campus improvements!
