TArGET AuDIENCE• Predominantly male through the use of

male figures but the male figures may also attract females

• People ranging in age from 17 – 45• Appeals to those who have a special

interest in crime movies and violence• Those who have a disposable income,

generally have a good level of English language and live within range of a cinema

CONTEXT• Poster would be found at cinemas,

shopping centers and public transport areas

purpOSE• To promote the movies, to attract the

target audience, to inform the viewers and to advertise the movie

RESERVOiR DOgS

Design Elements

Point • Illustrated as a letterform within the text• Used as a symbol © and ® on the bottom of the poster• Subtly used to add texture within the title

Line • Thick line is evident in the ties• It is also used within the logos at the

bottom of the poster to make the text clearer

• Used as a texture within the title

Shape • Creates the silhouettes of the men. They are organic and abstracted• Used within the logs at the bottom of the poster

Form • Form is evident within the face and the visible hand

Colour • There is a limited analogous colour scheme used depicting red and orange • Warm colours

Tone •There is a high key tone used on the faces of the men

Texture •Generated by the use of line and point within the title•Also evident in the hair of the men

Letterform •Sans serif font used throughout the entire poster

Design Principles

Hierarchy 1. 5 men2. ‘Reservoir Dogs’3. White text at the top of the poster

Figure/Ground

• Figure dominant 2/3rds image• Ground is occupied by flat orange colour

Balance • Asymmetrical balance is used

Cropping • Evident in the men on the far right• Also demonstrated by the cropping of the feet by the movies’ information

Contrast • Contrast between the text sizes (small V large)• Contrast within the men (light V dark)• Between the figure and the ground• The text within the men showing light V dark

Scale • Letterform ( 4 different sizes)

Proportion • Everything in proportion except the men. They are slightly elongated

Pattern • The men are seen to be placed in a repeated pattern; not very clear though

Design Elements

Point • Evident as a letterform, demonstrating full stops etc• Used also as symbols at the bottom of the poster• The overall finish on the poster uses point to create texture; predominantly - the hands

Line • Used within the logos (Amblin) • Used to define key letters S and L within the title

Shape • Illustrated at the bottom of the poster to create the logos

Form • Highlighted and evident in the hands

Colour • Low colour key is evident throughout the poster with the addition of sepia• A limited primary colour scheme is used with the red sleeve and yellow title

Tone • There is a graded tone evident in the hands; this is created by the contrast of light and dark

Texture • The use of point (stippling) creates texture on the hands• Cloth is also textural• Ground has texture

Letterform • A serif font is used throughout the poster• Letterform is also incorporated as a part of the image
