PAINTINGS BEFORE THE REVOLUTION
1849 Spaniards opened the ACADEMY FOR DRAWING AND PAINTING which is similar to the art schools in Madrid.
Spanish painters such as CORTINA and NIETO stayed here until 1860 when they were succeeded by another SPANISH painter, AGUSTIN SAEZ.
The art school taught new methods, theoretical, and practical subjects. From this academy emerged important Filipino artists.
