and lifestyle in both English and Spanish language media. Raised in a family of restaurateurs, she studied at Le Cordon Bleu
and learned the intricacies of global cuisine. Today, LaLa is a creative entrepreneur of the first order, operating a first class catering company, launching a line of Chef LaLa Homemade sauces and marinades, designing Chef LaLa house wares, and developing concepts for a bilingual lifestyle television show. Her passions are her family, mastering and refining the art of cooking, and educating communities about how to enjoy traditional cultural cuisine in a healthy way.
As a certified nutritionist, with special interest in the obesity and diabetes crisis in urban America, LaLa is focused on inspiring families to live healthier lives. As someone who has struggled with her own weight, LaLa knows the challenges women face. Over the years, LaLa has supported health and multicultural health education through her work as a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Foundation and the NBA Fit, as well as with a wide variety of other organization.
Despite what we know about diabetes, how to ward it off and how to prevent complications, the number of new cases is rising along with the death rate. Latinos are at special risk. More than 10 percent of all Mexican Americans twenty years or older have diabetes, almost double the rate of white people. Other Latinos have somewhat lower rates, but still higher than whites.
If you have diabetes or if you're reading this because you know someone who has it, what better time than the holidays to build a
healthier lifestyle that involves the entire familia? Just switching to different cooking methods, such as broiling, steaming, or baking, or eating less meat--which was the norm in many of our cultures before modern-day influences were introduced—can have a tremendous impact on health. Something that comes in its own package, the way nature intended, is always an excellent choice.
You also have the opportunity to create new family traditions involving exercise, which is critical for your long-term well-being. Going for a walk after dinner is a great time to catch up on the day's events. Bicycling with your children can be fun and relaxing. If you really want to honor our heritage, put on some music and dance! P

sixteen area artists who have work in collections and museums around the world are participating in Artists at the Hotel Maya group show. Palacio highlights two below.
Jonathan Bueno was born in Mexico City and moved to Southern California in 1995 at the age of eighteen to study art. He has participated in many shows throughout LA. The images in his paintings are appropriated from Google searches, clip art books, magazines, pornographic Mexican comic books, and even fliers left on the windshield of his car. Jonathan says about his work, “In an attempt to challenge notions of artistic originality this approach morphs the creative process through a selective act, much like a DJ remixes and samples preexisting music into something
different and fresh.”Painter, sculptor, and musician, Ramón Rodriguez was born,
raised, and attended art school in Bolivia. He received several national awards in oil painting, watercolor, and sculpture before he moved to the U.S. eleven years ago. He has participated in museum and gallery shows in Bolivia and the United States.
His work reflects a deep reverence for the earth, a profound connection to culture, and an exploration of dualities. “Love and hate. Abundance and scarcity. Spiritual and material. Ramón says, “These are perpetual dualities and struggles within each of us, spanning our entire life. Through my work I attempt to harmonize these dualities and create a dialog between extremes. I look for a balance of the two, for without one, the other wouldn’t exist.” P

a gang is the closest thing to a family that many young people experience in Long Beach. Danny Flores, who himself was an active gang member in his youth, used to think guns and knives were the only way to solve life's problems.
But today, the only weapon Flores uses is a paintbrush and a message of peace and hope.
Several years ago, Flores created "Messengers of Peace," a small group of Chicano artists who use paintbrushes and canvas to help young people avoid gangs and make better choices in their lives in the Greater Long Beach area.
"One kid told me that art was the only time he felt peace inside him," Flores said. "I discovered that art is a great opportunity to change someone's mind-set and to build relationships."
Flores was 24 when he hit bottom with drugs and alcohol, then rediscovered God. With the help of a rehabilitation program, Flores climbed out of the deep hole he was in and began his life work educating at-risk youths through gang violence prevention and intervention programs.
For nine years, he directed the state's MAGIC program in Los Angeles County, a male involvement project that focused on preventing teen pregnancy and promoting responsible fatherhood. Flores was a gang prevention officer in Los
Angeles when he decided to call some of his artist friends to organize an exhibit to raise money for a fatherhood program.
"At the show, we talked about the consequences of life on canvas," he said. "A lot of people came, and we decided to take the art show to different communities in Southern California." Flores said he came up with the name Messengers of Peace because "I love to talk, and I've always seen myself as a messenger." His fellow artists in the group are Manny Velazquez, Carlos Sanchez, Ken Machaca and Daniel Martinez.
Flores said his past life as a gang member helps him get through to youths.
"I have credibility with them because I've been through so many of the same things. They see me as someone who was able to get out of that vicious cycle of gangs and despair."
In addition to his volunteer work with "Messengers of Peace," Flores works as a case manager for the Long Beach Health Department at its Multi-Service Center. Flores said he is next considering organizing a run: "I'm thinking of doing a Peace Run in Long Beach, going from community to community," he said. "We could get nonprofits involved. It could be a very healing thing."
No matter what the future holds, Flores is sure to continue to find ways to spread his gospel of peace and hope. P

long Beach’s population is aging rapidly, and Latinos make up the fastest growing segment of the 55+ population. We cherish our Latino elders and look to them
for their wisdom and strength.According to the U.S. Census Bureau,
between 2008 and 2030 the Latino population aged 65 years and older will increase by 224 percent, compared to a 65 percent increase for the white population. These growth trends are likely to have significant implications for programs and policies designed to support seniors.
Long Beach Latino Age Wave is a multi-year funded project of Centro CHA Inc., in partnership with CSULB and The Center for Successful Aging in the College of Health and Human Services and Senior Latino Club - of Long Beach, with generous support from Hispanics In Philanthropy and The Atlantic Philanthropies, The California Wellness Foundation and The SCAN Foundation. The launch took place at Centro CHA Inc., 1900 Atlantic Avenue, in Long Beach on October 8.
Latino Age Wave’s research shows that older Latino adults face barriers and disparities in income, health care, employment, housing, transportation and access to culturally sensitive programs. With dramatic increases in the numbers, longevity and diversity in older adult population, it is time for a shift in how communities care for their elders. Institutional models of care and services that segregate older adults from their families and community are neither culturally relevant nor sustainable. The

is an electronic device on your gift list this holiday season? Many young people will get a cell phone, iPod, or game device for the holidays. And parents will find themselves struggling to find a balance for their kids between being connected and being unplugged.
Electronics seem to have taken over every waking second of our children’s lives, and for many of us, our own lives as well! Now, everyone has cellphones and, although we used to live without being reachable 24/7, we somehow no longer can. Teens say they need access to their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and text messages or they may miss out on a crucial piece of information like who just dumped whom, or who just won a place in the World Series.
I recently drove my son and three of his friends to Saturday meetings to build a solar powered car. They met weekly for months. One day, we were in the car, and they were all laughing, although they were not talking with one another. Turns out they were texting each other, even though they were all sitting in the same car.
Have you noticed how often kids are Tweeting, Texting, Facebooking, or receiving calls? Left unmonitored, my kids would be plugged in all day, attentive to any attempted contact.
In our household, we finally had to implement an electronics policy. Cell phone use is an earned privilege. Each night at 7:30 (an hour before bedtime) all the phones must be placed on the kitchen table. If phones aren’t there, Mom keeps the phone the next day. For texts, we decided on 360 a month to be renegotiated after 90 days and adjusted accordingly, up or down, depending on family cooperation and school performance.
To help us monitor phone usage, we pay $10 a month for unlimited texting, and to add the plan that allows parents to set limits, we pay an additional $5 a month.
It will be money well spent if it helps us teach our kids to balance their use of electronic devices and keeps the lines of communication open. Not the electronic kind, but the kind where you look each other in the eye--without Facetime or Skype! P

the odds of Steven Lien succeeding in life, let alone being born in the first place, were stacked against him. More than 40 years ago, his parents escaped from the horrors of war in Vietnam in a tiny boat floating in the China Sea. They had only small amounts of water
and rice to sustain them. Their survival was even more miraculous because the first boat they were supposed to board sank with all passengers lost at sea. Steven’s father had decided to wait for a later boat thinking it would be less crowded and afford him and his wife a better chance of survival. He was right; the Liens were picked up by a U.S. ship and given asylum in the United States.
In 1991, Steven was born. When he started first grade, his inability to comprehend the curriculum became apparent to his teachers and parents. He was diagnosed with severe learning disabilities and was placed in special education classes. After some time, the public school district decided they did not offer the right services for him and he was transferred to ChildNet’s nonpublic school.
Steven had difficulty adjusting to his new school but, after a struggle, he settled in and began making progress in a smaller setting, including a classroom with only 12 students. His Individual Education Plan (IEP) was designed to work with his
specific learning difficulties. His one-on-one tutor was a key factor in Steven’s progress. The academy staff also worked with Steven to help him improve his social skills and his ability to relate to his peers.
Despite his uphill battle, Steven graduated from high school and was awarded a scholarship from ChildNet and Long Beach Kiwanis to enroll at Pasadena Community College, where he is currently studying English Literature. Steven continues to struggle, but there is no doubt about his determination to succeed. He has strong family support and the foundation of success that he achieved during his time with ChildNet.
“I want to be more productive, independent, and be a help to society,” Steven said. “I would like to write about my experience and help those who have the same problems to overcome. I want everybody out there with [learning disabilities] to know that there is hope. Don’t give up, although you may fail; you must get up to continue to pursue your dream. It doesn’t matter how old you are, if you set your heart to it, you will achieve your goal.”
Steven will graduate from Pasadena City College in June 2014 and plans to transfer to Azusa Pacific University. Odds are he will be a great success at APU and all that lies ahead for him. P

the City of Long Beach was recently awarded $250,000 to develop a community-based plan for improving the physical environment of West Long Beach. The California Department of Transportation [Caltrans] is providing the grant through their Environmental
Justice planning grant which, “promotes the involvement of low-income and minority communities and Native American tribal governments in the planning for transportation projects.” The Terminal Island Freeway Transition Plan identifies the last mile of the freeway in West Long Beach to be de-designated as a truck route.
Based on the Caltrans Award Listing, “The Terminal Island (TI) Freeway Transition Plan will provide planning and conceptual design services to develop a vision for transforming the TI Freeway into an 88-acre greenbelt and local roads that will directly benefit a disproportionately impacted environmental justice community in West Long Beach. This plan presents a rare opportunity to coordinate replacing an underutilized freeway while mitigating pollution impacts to address long-standing community health concerns.”
The concept of replacing the Terminal Island Freeway in West Long Beach has been a collaborative effort between various City Departments and Officials other government agencies, local
stakeholders and community groups. The multitude of benefits including improving local transportation networks, reducing public health impacts and expanding open space access.
Replacing the last mile of the Terminal Island Freeway was initiated to address land-use conflicts and transportation impacts on residents and students West Long Beach from adjacent infrastructure, refineries and industrial uses. Removing urban freeways is not a new premise, as cities from San Francisco to Portland to Chattanooga have successfully removed them.
By replacing the mile length of the Terminal Island Freeway between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow Street with a neighborhood-scale street, there is potentially 30 acres of surplus public land that, when combined with adjacent under-utilized right-of-ways, could create a substantial land-use separation between existing schools and homes in West Long Beach and the infrastructure, refineries and industrial uses to the west.
Based on this premise, the Terminal Island Freeway Transition plan would develop a community-based vision of how this new transportation network would serve the adjacent neighborhood and how the mile long, two block wide swath of land could be repurposed to benefit the community. The Terminal Island Freeway Transition Plan community planning process is projected to take place in 2014. P

as the holiday season is approaching, motorists need to be mindful of actions that will make their holiday travel safer. Drivers can protect themselves and their passengers by following these holiday travel rules.
Before you start your trip, make sure your vehicle is tuned up and in good shape for travel. Get a free vehicle inspection. If they identify potentially trip-interrupting issues, like loose tie rods or frayed drive belts, you can have them remedied before your departure. Change the oil if an oil change is due. Buy new tires or check the pressure and treads. Besides maximizing fuel economy, correctly inflated tires will improve handling and are more resistant to punctures. This is especially important for winter driving conditions.
Restrain yourself and your passengers properly in seat belts and car safety seats. Remember, the rear seat is the safest place for children of any age to ride.
Be flexible in setting your travel plans; leave early to avoid the peak traffic hours; and plan your route. Real-time traffic information can plot out backups and is provided for free by Web-based mapping services like MapQuest. There are also applications available for mobile devices, including GPS units and smart phones. If snow is predicted during the time you plan to travel, change your schedule.
Stay fresh and alert when driving. If you get tired, pull off the road into a rest area or business, get out of the car for some fresh air, or buy something to refresh you. If that doesn’t work, find a motel or campground. Forty-one percent of fatal traffic accidents
are single vehicle crashes. These crashes most often occur during the late night/early morning hours and the late afternoon hours.
Keep your speed down. Give yourself plenty of time and distance to react to the traffic around you. Let impatient and aggressive drivers pass you or go through the intersection ahead of you so that you control the situation.
Do not pass if you cannot see enough clear road to pass safely. If there will be drinking at your holiday get-together, choose a designated driver who will remain alcohol free.
Because driving requires your full attention, pull off the road if you have to use your cellular phone. P

hacerlo.

8. Use only three strands of lights per electrical cord or outlet. An overload could cause a short circuit and a fire.
9. Unplug lights and extension cords when you leave home or go to bed. Use a timer so they are on only during the hours you select, which can also help you save energy.
3. No use velas encendidas en árboles o decoraciones.
Tis The Season to be SafeEs la temporada de celebrar con seguridad
