Paladin THE Knights of Columbus Arden/Carmichael Council 4970 District 9 – Division 4 Serving St. Ignatius of Loyola and Our Lady of the Assumption Parishes IN THE LORD’S EYES YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A LEADER by Grand Knight- Miguel Sabral I want to give thanks to all my Brothers for making this a terrific year as your Grand Knight. We completed our mission and did great things this year and we also shared many exciting moments together as Knights. As your Grand Knight for this fraternal year 2019-2020, I have many thoughts I want to share with you Brother Knights in my final message. A year ago, I was approached by 2 Brother Knights (no names) both of them stop me in my tracks after a Business Meeting was over. Both of them told me they have a new position for me , so I asked what is the position they explained to me they are putting me in the HOT SEAT as the new Deputy Grand Knight for the fraternal year 2018-2019, I asked them both can I cut the mustard! Both said to me I will be alright to step up and will be able to handle all tasks that come my way. I said to the both brothers that sound really nice, then I can move up to be Grand Knight in the following fraternal year, I said I would like to make this happen before I make 60 that is my goal. To be a successful council as your Grand Knight I will be able to communicate, work, and be a team player. To be a brother knight you should be able to step up and contribute your time to support, to help and to reach the program goals, and be able to fully participate in all events. We all come together as Catholic men with life experiences and exchange information as brothers. As Knights of Columbus we also help others and come together in celebration of our faith, in the good Lord’s eyes this council will be a very successful one. JOE’S CAFÉ…Stop by for a tasty bit! Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

Sentimental Journey Late last year, my wife and I attended my 50th high school class reunion. We packed our suitcases, got our hotel reservation, and away we went enjoying an uneventful four-hour road trip winding our way down Highway 99 through the San Joaquin Valley to Visalia. It was amazing to think that 50 years had elapsed since 400 starry-eyed high school seniors were so enthusiastic about our futures. The year was 1969 and Richard M. Nixon was our nation’s president. The average income per year was $8,550. The average cost of a first-class stamp was 6 cents, a gallon of gas cost 35 cents, a gallon of milk was $1.10, and a new house cost $15,550. Among other important events were Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon and the invention of the microprocessor which opened the way for the computer revolution. “Sesame Street” debuted on educational television for children, while the rest of us watched television favorites such as Family Affair, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Mayberry R.F.D. and Laugh-in. Our reunion celebration was held at a country club with around 160 in attendance. Time was not kind to many of my classmates. Premature deaths (mostly from drugs, vehicle accidents, and chronic diseases) thinned our ranks over the years. Sadly, the whereabouts of many of our classmates who were important to us during our high school days were no longer known. Charles Dickens said, "The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again." He was right. Lots of stories and old photographs made their way around the hall, with new photos being snapped to memorialize the event. Even with picture name tags, it was sometimes a challenge to put individual faces and names together. As we mixed and mingled, old friendships and memories were rekindled. It was interesting to note the different paths everyone took after getting their high school diploma. By the end of the evening it was almost like our 50 years apart had melted away. Highlights for me included having teachers who taught us 50 years ago present at the reunion and a group picture taken with my elementary school classmates. I have attended most of my class reunions over the years, but the 50th seemed to take on greater importance. This is because most of my classmates and I knew that this reunion would likely be one of the last events that we would all be at together. Death, along with future physical and mental ailments would surely continue to take their toll on our remaining classmates. The older I get the more I become aware that it is not what happens to us in life, but how we deal with the circumstances that come our way. One of the most important things that I have learned in the 50 years since graduating from high school is that life is all about choices. On every journey we take, we face choices around every bend and fork in the road. My Brothers, our Heavenly Father created us out of love. Each of us was given a life with unique experiences and characteristics to enjoy and to share with others. We were all given the gift of free will, and may choose to live as God desires, or to walk away from the path of holiness. The trip to attend my 50th high school reunion was a success. The sentimental journey back home renewed old friendships and jogged enjoyable memories of the good ole days. So far, my trek through life has been a wonderful and rewarding journey. Thank-you, God!

As Christians we are called to evangelization. We have been given the mission to spread the Gospel, the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. To that end Christian missionaries have traveled throughout the world, converting entire countries to the Faith. The Korean Exception But Korea is an exception. It was not evangelized through missionaries, but through the Korean laity. In the 18thcentury, young scholars were searching for ideas that would guide their divided country. They studied Western literature and became fascinated with Christianity and the concept of God as a merciful Father. Over time, fascination turned into belief. At the time Korean delegations made periodic trips to Peking to establish commercial and cultural exchanges. During one such trip the Koreans brought back Father Matteo Ricci's book, “The True Doctrine of God.” A Korean layman, Lee Byok, was inspired by this book and founded the first Christian community sometime around 1780. Byok asked a member of this community who was going to China, to be baptized and bring back more books and writings on the Catholic faith. Lee Byok organized the community as best he could without the guidance of missionaries. He died at the age of 31. But his community continued and when they learned about ecclesial structure and the role of the Church hierarchy, it submitted itself to the Bishop of Peking. The Catholic church in Korea stands as an example of man's need for God, a need that is filled by the Church Jesus established here on earth. Jesus Prepared Us During this time of Easter, between the Resurrection and Pentecost, the readings at mass follow along as Jesus guides the Church in its first steps. As the day draws near for Jesus to ascend to the Father, He begins to prepare His followers for a time when He will no longer be physically visible to them. Instead, He prepares them for a time when God will lead the Church in a hidden way, through the Holy Spirit. Jesus assures His followers that if they believe, they will not only perform miracles such as He did, but the Church will do even greater deeds. From the very beginning, God reserved for His Church a role in the world that Jesus Himself did not wish to have. We have seen the results. The impact of the Church on the world is all around us. Social mores, the university system, science, art, architecture, hospitals and charities all bear the imprint of the Catholic Church. Jesus laid the foundation for a Church built of living stones, a Church that would change the world. But sadly over the last few hundred years, the forces of secularism have had a greater influence on society. Past evils have reasserted themselves in new ways. The modern world bears many similarities to the world in which the early Church fought for its life. Jesus promised us, that if we have faith, we would prevail and do great works. It is time for us to change the world once again. Pax vobiscum Deacon Lawrence Klimecki deaconlawrence.com

MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR: To Live is to Change

John Henry Newman was canonized a saint in October of 2019. One of my favorite pieces of wisdom from him is this: “To live is to change, and to have changed often is to become holy.” If that is true, and I believe it is, why do we mortals have such difficulty with the changes in our lives? As the writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us, “There is a time or season for everything.” As we move closer to the celebration of Pentecost, when Christ sent us the gift of the Spirit, I am reminded that this Spirit is present in all the changes of our life that help us grow in the holiness God intends for us. In July of 2009, then Provincial John McGarry missioned me to St. Ignatius Parish in Sacramento to succeed Fr. Gerald Robinson and become the 9th pastor of this parish. I knew

very little about the length and breadth of parish life since I was a university professor for almost 30 years. But you — the people I was sent to both guide and serve — taught me how to be a pastor. I think you taught me well, and I will always be grateful for the ways you taught me and changed me. You have been a catalyst of change for me. Because of your teaching and care, I think I am a better priest, a better Jesuit, and a better human being. I thank you for that. I have been your pastor for 11 years. Where did the time go by so quickly? I turned 75 last September. Most of my Diocesan colleagues that age have been retired for 10 years. Jesuits do not retire. They continue to do whatever small good they can even as their location, their health, and mobility changes. For three years I have been asking our Provincial, Fr. Scott Santarosa, to send a younger Jesuit here to continue pastoring the flock at St. Ignatius. Frankly, someone younger needs to do the “heavy lifting” of pastoring. The Provincial has granted my request. This summer, Fr. Tom Lucas will make his way back to his “place of origins” to become the 10th pastor of St. Ignatius Parish. Tom was a Novice when I was the Assistant Director of Novices. If he could survive that period of his Jesuit life, he will absolutely thrive among the people and ministries of St. Ignatius Parish. Fr. Tom Lucas is a remarkably talented man. He was born in Placerville, went to Sacred Heart Grade School, is a classmate of both Jim Daugherty and Jerry Reedy at Jesuit High School and Santa Clara University, is an accomplished artist, began the Art Department at University of San Francisco and taught there many years, and was most recently the Rector of the Jesuit Community at Seattle University. We are including his picture and brief prose biography in this weekend’s Bulletin. Just in case you hear the rumor that Fr. Mike is sick with some life-threatening illness, that simply is not true. My Primary Care Physician recently told me that I am in remarkable health for a 75-year-old. So, Fr. Santarosa has asked me to remain on the pastoral staff here at St. Ignatius. I am happy to do this. I cannot think of a better place or a more engaging and delightful group of people in whom I regularly encounter the presence and grace of God. I will have reduced pastoral responsibilities, but will continue to celebrate Masses and offer homilies, preside at other sacramental celebrations, visit the young children in our School (after all, I could be their grandfather or great-grandfather, age-wise), and hopefully have more time to ponder and write some of the prayers and poems I think are still inside of me and anxious to get out. Fr. Tom Lucas is currently in Rome sheltering in place. He will be returning to the Bay area towards the end of June. He will join the Sacramento Jesuit Community around the middle of July. It has not been determined yet when exactly he will be installed as pastor. Our best guesstimate is sometime in September. As this pastoral change occurs, I will continue to be flooded with wonderful memories of having been your shepherd these past 11 years. Every memory gives me even more reason to be “grateful for our past and hopeful in our future.” May St. John Henry Newman help us both experience and understand the wisdom he shared when he said, “To live is to change, and to have changed often is to grow holy.” Amen to that, and Alleluia! Fr. Mike Moynahan, S.J.
