PRAYER MY HEAVENLY FATHER Miguel Sabral- Grand Knight

Heavenly Father, I come to you in prayer asking for the forgiveness of my sins. I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is your Son, and that he died on the cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Father, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead so I ask you right now to come in to my life and be my personal Lord and Savior. I repent of my sins and will worship you all days of my life! Because your word is the truth, I confess

with my mouth that I am born again and cleansed by the blood of Jesus! God is good all the time. He wants us to have a

relationship, and an eternal life with him where all things are made right. In Jesus name, Amen.

WE WERE BUSY! Jerry Butler- Deputy Grand Knight and Program Director

On August 4th we had a ice cream social at Leatherby’s Ice Cream Parlor. Twenty-two Knights and Lady Knights had a wonderful time catching up with each other and getting in from the 100 degree heat of the day.

On August 9th & 10th the Knights were involved in the Homeless Vets Stand Down at McClellan Conference Center. The Vets received medical assistance, haircuts, clothing and help from agencies where they could get help. This was a very humbling experience for many and it makes makes you feel grateful for what you have.

On August 25th council members also attended the dedication of the newly built St. Ignatius School. Bishop Soto was present, blessing the school and other associated buildings.

A NOTE FROM OUR FIELD AGENT

Brother Knights, As I meet and speak with Brother Knights and their families, I am discovering that most are unaware of the breadth of products we offer in support of you and your family’s financial security. Of course, life insurance is the core of the Knights family’s security going back to our founding in 1882. We provide term and permanent insurance (more on the differences between those two in a future article as there is plenty of confusion out there!) as well as some other life insurance products targeted to your needs.

What else do we provide you may be asking? How about retirement annuities to supplement your retirement portfolio with guaranteed, tax deferred savings that you can’t outlive? Or disability income insurance to make sure your biggest asset, your paycheck, isn’t lost should you be unable to work? And finally long term care insurance. Having owned and managed a home health services company, I saw all too often what happens when the care and support that is needed in our later years wipes out accumulated savings or isn’t available because there are no funds to pay for it. I became an advocate for long term care insurance for the middle aged sons and daughters who felt helpless trying to figure out how to get Mom or Dad the care and support they couldn’t afford. Did they also want to be in that same position in 10, 20, 30 years? Do you? Let’s talk. God Bless! Dave Moeller Phone: (916) 801-3403 email: [email protected]

God bless them all over the years. Get back to me with numbers and I'll start making a list prior to advertising the event later this month. Hope to see all of you. Love and God Bless, gENE GOBBO

RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS FOR JESUS

Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight In a place, far, far away, there is a line of applicants standing in front of the lobby window of the Knights of Columbus Membership Recruiting Office. There is a sign blinking three alternate messages--- ALWAYS OPEN FOR BUSINESS; NOW RECRUITING, APPLY WITHIN; and “FOLLOW ME”. Prominently displayed on a wall is a recruiting poster with an iconic American character whose finger is outstretched declaring to anyone who looks up, “WE NEED YOU”. On a second wall is a picture of Jesus with outstretched hands and HIS admonishment to serve one another. Yet on another wall is a picture depicting a group of men in Galilee looking up at the sky as Jesus rises into the clouds. Also depicted, are two men dressed in white garments, standing beside them questioning, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into Heaven." Suddenly, over the loudspeaker comes the authoritative announcement, “Now Serving Applicants for Knights of Columbus Arden-Carmichael Council Number 4970”. Granted, this may be a silly dream today brought on by a sugar high from our recent Ice Cream Social, but tomorrow who can tell? We all know God works in mysterious ways and nothing is impossible for Him. By the way, the incredible staff working in the Heavenly-inspired place described above are devoted and always working hard to recruit new members for Jesus. Amazingly, they look like us because whether in this world or in the worlds of virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence THEY ARE US! We are all recruiters for our Council, OR SHOULD BE. Saint Ambrose had it right when he said, “It is not enough just to wish well; we must also do well.” We cannot stand idle staring up into the sky. We have to shape our lives into something grand before the Lord returns. What better way to do this than to be a Brother Knight in Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 and recruiting new members for Jesus?

If you are aware of any Catholic gentleman who would like to join, be readmitted or to transfer, let our Membership Director, PGK Joe Kievernagel know. His telephone number is listed in this and every issue of the Paladin.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS HAS ELIMINATED 200,000+ APPLICATIONS FOR HEALTH CARE

Dan Aseltine, Vet’s Chairman

According to the Atlanta Constitution-Journal of July 15, 2019, the US Department of Veterans Affairs’ Health Eligibility Center in Atlanta, Georgia has “eliminated” 208,272 applications nationwide for health care during January and February of this year. Reasons offered for these “purges” included absence of a signature, or missing information about military service or income, on the VA application for health care. Some Veterans’ groups are criticizing VA for lack of communication with Veterans who submitted incomplete information with their applications for health care. Some of the +200,000 health care applications date back to the 20th century. VA has been attempting to deal with a huge backlog of claims for medical care from Veterans who have served during recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wait list for health care stood at approximately 300,000 individuals as of April 2019. Adrian Atizado, deputy national legislative director of the Disabled American Veterans, reacted, “When we hear about the VA not taking a more thoughtful approach to a situation like this – when they send only one letter because they have an incomplete application – I think we should all be expecting our government and this administration to do better by our Veterans.” Scott Davis is a VA employee and whistleblower who testified in 2014 before Congress about the ongoing issue of denial of healthcare benefits to Veterans. In an opinion piece published in the Washington Examiner on May 13, 2019 (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/op-eds/trump-administration-breaks-campaign-promise-purges-200-000-va-healthcare-applications ), he editorialized “This purge has the dual effect of letting the VA avoid the work of processing the applications and absolving the agency of any responsibility for veterans’ delayed access to health and disability benefits.” VA has responded to this incident by stating that Veterans may reapply for health care. FAMILY DAY AT LEATHERBY’S

Todd Wilson, Chairman They came, they ordered, and went off their diets as more than 20 brother Knights and family members attended our annual Ice Cream Social, which took place on Sunday, August 4th, at Leatherby’s. Highlight of the festivities was a Black-and-Tan sundae faceoff between Joe and Miguel. Miguel was the winner as he consumed the sundae as well as the melted portions on the dish before Joe could finish. The group engaged in over an hour of spirited conversation and fellowship. They can’t wait until next year’s social so they can go off their diets again!

FAMILY OF THE MONTH

Jerry Marenich, coordinator

Congratulations to the Joseph and Elizabeth Romanazzi Family, our Council’s June 2019 Family of the Month. Joe and Elizabeth will celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary in April next year. They have been active parishioners at St. John the Evangelist Parish for 34 years. Joe serves as an altar server at daily Masses several days a week and also serves at funeral Masses. Joe was born, raised, and educated in Visalia, California, and received his college degrees from both Fresno State and San Francisco State Universities. He’s been a resident of the Sacramento area since 1985. Liz is a Sacramento native, graduate of St. Francis High School and attended Sacramento City College. Joe retired from the State of California in 2005

following a 30-year career in Labor Market Analysis and Labor Law Enforcement. Liz retired after many years of retail and banking experience and as an independent sales consultant with Pampered Chef, a direct seller of cookware, cutlery and cookbooks. Joe became a member Knight and Elizabeth a Lady Knight on April 7, 2014, when Joe received his First Degree. He received his Second and Third Degrees at an Exemplification held in West Sacramento in September 2014. Joe and Elizabeth have been very active in the activities of the Knights and our Council. They enjoy the Council’s many social and community functions and activities. Joe has held the offices of Recorder, Chancellor, Deputy Grand Knight, and most recently, Grand Knight. Elizabeth also supports her parish and council, by often donating various items that she either purchases or makes to her parish and Council for fundraising events and for the homeless. Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 and its members are truly fortunate and honored to have Joe and Elizabeth as members.

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

By Chuck Cuny The Catholic Church understands the ‘love thy neighbor” commandment quite differently than the Jews.

The Babylonians believed that the “gods” were in the ground. Thus, when they captured the tribe of Juda (Jews), they removed them from the land of Juda to Babylon. This presumable would pacify them when separate from Judean soil. Jerusalem was destroyed and the remaining Jews moved to Samaria. What was left were the poor, the sick, and the crippled. The Babylonians moved other people into the vacuum. The new people adopted the belief of the Jews while the captured Jews had their personal God, Yahweh, who travel with them and they refused to intergrade. Some seventy years later, the Persian King Cyrus conquered Babylon and returned the Jews and helped them rebuild the destroyed city of Jerusalem. The returning Jews despised the “half-breed” Samaritans and built a high wall to keep them separated.

Saint Luke, in his Gospel relates the following: When Jesus was asked “What is the greatest commandment?” He replied, “You must love the Lord thy God and the second is like it, love thy neighbor. But who is thy neighbor?” Then Jesus gives the parable of the Good Samaritan. In the parable, a Jew is traveling on the road to Jerusalem when robbers took all his goods and beat him almost to death. A Jewish priest and levy walked past him without offering assistance. If they touched an unclean object (a sick man) they were prohibited from their sacred duties. A despised “half-breed” Samaritan stopped and cleansed his wounds. He then brought him to an inn (hospital) and paid for his stay there, a concrete example of love. The “Second Greatest Commandment” which is the fundament foundation for all social laws, is the same for Christians and Jews but the application is quite different. The Jewish neighbor is a fellow Jew. The Christian neighbor is all that he meets. This is the catholic (universal) key to understanding fundamental difference between Christianity and other religions. Saint John’s Gospel reiterates the “love they neighbor” commandment separate from the “love of God’ putting on an almost equal footing, but it is Luke’s Gospel that gives a concrete example of love.

NOVENA FOR LIFE AT OLA Knights all over the world sponsor this annual Novena for Life in their respective parishes. This September/October the novena will be advertised at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. Parishioners simply pick up the card (LEFT) and choose 9 days in a row to pray the prayer. So simple, so effective!!! During this Fall 40 Days for Life won’t you take a few minutes each day to pray for all those involved in abortion, especially the unborn? Jesus, we trust in you.
