In 1777 in the midst of the American Revolution the first official

national Thanksgiving celebration was declared by the new nation that had so recently declared its independence from Britain the year before. In October 1789, the recently founded new federal government, George Washington issued the first Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamation as a day of thanks to that “glorious of all the good that was, that is, or that will be”.

WE WERE BUSY! Jerry Butler- Deputy Grand Knight and Program Director

On October 6th Council 4970 participated in the Life Chain at the corner of Madison and Manzanita. We had a good turnout of Knights & two Ladies from the Bay Side Church in Citrus Heights

On October 2nd & 16th we held the Men’s Bible Study at Saint Ignatius Parish and it is growing with interest. We had 16 men in the Bible Study on the 16th. LOCAL WISDOM: IN MY FAMILY WE DON’T HIDE CRAZY. WE PUT IT ON THE PORCH AND GIVE IT A BEER. I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY COOKIES IT TAKES TO MAKE YOU HAPPY, BUT SO FAR IT’S NOT 27! I CAN WALK TO MY LOCAL BAR IN 5 MINUTES. IT TAKES ME 25 MINUTES TO WALK BACK. THE DIFFERENCE IS STAGGERING.

THANK YOU! Caltronics, located in Rancho Cordova, has graciously volunteered to publish our Paladin, saving our Council over $1500 in costs. Many thanks go to Caltronics. For over 40 years they have been providing California with leading- edge technology and award winning service in the document management and software solutions industry.

FAMILY OF THE MONTH

Mario La Schiazza and Gerald Marenich, Family Activities

Each month, we honor a Brother Knight and his family, who have exemplified the finest values taught by the Catholic Church and our order. Congratulations to the Charles and Mary Ann Cuny Family, our October 2019 Family of the Month. The Cuny family has been very active in serving the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Charles is a member of St Ignatius Parish, where for many years, he served as a Minister of Hospitality and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a catechist for the RCIA Program and has served on many church related

committees. Charles (Chuck) and Mary Ann raised six outstanding and successful children: Charles, David, Richard, Linda, Julia, and Theresa. Their son Charles received his PhD from Stanford University; David and Richard graduated from California State University Sacramento. Linda, the oldest daughter received her licensure from the University of California Davis and is an attorney. Julia graduated from the University of California Irvine, while Theresa graduated from CSUS. Charles and Mary Ann also have eleven grandchildren.

Charles joined the Knights of Columbus on September 10, 1996, received his Second and Third Degrees on September 22, 1996, and has served in numerous positions, including serving two terms as the Worthy Grand Knight (1999-2000 and 2000-2001). He has also served as the Membership Chairman and has been responsible for recruiting numerous new members for the council, including his son Richard. He has also served as Council Chairman for the annual ID Drive, in which members of his family also participated. His leadership and drive enabled our council to be the top fundraising council in the Northern California Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. For many years, Brother Charles has written a very interesting monthly column under the banner “Chuck’s Corner” for the council’s “Paladin”.

For many years, Charles, along with Brother Loren Wallin, co-chaired the Annual Council Christmas Parties. Chuck acted as the emcee, while daughters Julia and Therese, along with Loren’s wife, Aurora, helped to decorate the dining room, arrange for raffle prizes, serve food, while sons David and Richard provided music and, along with Chuck, lead in singing Christmas carols. Members of the family have also been involved in the annual fireworks booth, many pancake breakfasts, and past Clergy Appreciation Dinners. In years past, Charles and Mary Ann have opened their home for the annual Mass and Installation of Council Officers.

Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 and its members are honored and very proud, to have the Cuny Family as members of the council.

MINISTRY FAIRE AT OLA

Michael Dougherty

Once again our Knights came through in solid support of the OLA ministry faire. The parishioner patronage at the tables was a bit light for several of the Masses, not unlike prior years I am told. But thanks to Council 4970 ‘s highly visible presence, we drew a pretty good response and secured signatures and contact info from at least 5 men interested in joining or in follow up calls, and one who expressed an interest in transferring to our Council due to relocation to our parish. That’s an average of one per Mass, not bad for a hot weekend. My heartfelt thanks to each of you who sat through the heat and pulled this together on fairly short notice. Special thanks to GK Miguel for starting us off Saturday evening, to Joe K. for bringing the box of promo materials and KofC poster and to Don who brought him, to Peter K for the big banner and table cover, to PGK Joe R. for getting the photo record, and to each of you for your steadfast dedication to our Church, parish and Council. God Bless and Keep you all!

At the time of Christ, there were only two recognized religions. The first was Emperor’s religion. The second was a special exception called Judaism. All other forms of worship were forbidden and suppressed.

THE MATCH THAT LIT THE FLAME

By Chuck Cuny

Christianity initially was considered part of that Jewish religion. Most of the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem still clung to the Mosaic Law (Law of Moses). Around 40 years after Christ’s death, a delegation of Jewish Christians traveled from Jerusalem to Antioch, the largest Christian center of the time and mostly gentiles (non-Jew). The

delegation were aghast to find that the gentiles were not circumcised and did not follow much of the Mosaic Law.

The delegation brought the issue to James, the head of the Church in Jerusalem. He in turn called the important apostolic leaders such as Paul and Peter to a conference called the Jerusalem Conference. Paul, a Mosaic Scholar, argued that Gentile Christians are not bound by most of the Mosaic Laws. This conference did much to separate Christianity from Judaism. Here now, the Church exercise authority over Mosaic Law. Gentiles are not subjected to most Jewish Laws. It basically established the independence for Christians who were then scorned as Gentiles and unclean. While the intent of the Conference was to compromise the differences between Gentile and Jewish Christian beliefs, it only paved the way for many other changes. Mosaic Law required rest/worship on Saturday, Christians used Sunday as a day of worship, the first Commandment called for a Jewish jealous God, Christianity argued for a universal loving God, the Jews argued for circumcision, Christians argued for baptism, Jews argued for salvation under the Mosaic Law, Christians argued salvation by grace, The conference brought to the head the many difference between Mosaic Law and Christian Law. As Christianity separated from Judaism, the Roman Army attempted to suppress Christianity. The attempts only drove Christians the Church underground. Small groups of Christians, threatened under the Roman sword, met in secret hovels and develop secret symbols such as the cross, the fish, the sacrifice lamb, the Good Shepard, It seemed like the more Christians were persecuted, the more they expanded. The persecution continued until the rise of Constantine as a Christian Emperor (305 AD). Epilogue – Paul saved the day. He was the match that lit the light for current and ongoing changes in the church. While the proposal was believed to be a compromise, it freed Christians from Jewish Law and highlighted the difference their differences.cccc

LIFE CHAIN Peter Mendenhall, LIFE Chairman

There is an old salt in politics that states: “If you tell a lie long enough, some will start to believe it”. The corollary of this is “If you don’t remind some of the truth, they may forget it”. The Life Chain occurred, once again, on October 6th. A total of 11 Knights, 2 Lady Knights, and 3 other women gathered at the corner of Madison and Manzanita Boulevards to remind drivers of the truth. We got lots of honks, and a few digital salutes. It is not the number of us that wins the battle; it is our unwillingness to give up. There are Pro-Life winds blowing, and the weather is changing on this issue. The truth is that there are many societal concerns in America, but Life is above them all--- it Trumps all others. Well done, good and faithful brothers! Pictured L to R are John Mizerak, Peter Mendenhall, Jerry Butler, Joe Romanazzi, and Bill Davis.

KNIGHTS RETREAT Ken Macdonald- Chairman

Our “Faith in Action” Program calls for a “Spiritual Reflection Program” as a part of the overall curriculum. Most recently, we had an excellent evening retreat at Christ the King Passionist Retreat Center which was very well attended. We now have an opportunity to expand our retreat experience with a one day reflection to be held at Christ the King on Saturday, November 23. Registration begins at 9:30 with the first presentation taking place at 10:00. Lunch will be served. The day will close with a Mass beginning at 2:00. The cost of the retreat will be $40 (discounted rate) and registration will be available on-line prior to the November 23 date. Our retreat will be developed in conjunction with the theme of this year’s Retreat Season: “Come and See”. At this point the sessions will be conducted by Fr. Giltus Mathias, and newest retreat team addition, Fr. Jack Connolly. Both speakers are very dynamic in their presentation styles. You will enjoy both presenters! “Come and See” all that Christ the King has to offer for you! This retreat opportunity affords each of us to enhance his own spiritual depth and development. Christ the King offers a number of wonderful opportunities for spiritual growth and enhancement throughout the year. Please take this opportunity to “do something for yourself”! We work selflessly for others, so perhaps it is time to do something spiritually significant for ourselves. See you there!! God Bless!

EVERY DAY IS A GIFT FROM GOD Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

There is a popular soap opera on daytime television that always begins, Like sand through an hourglass, so are the days of our lives. Much like the sand passing through an hourglass, our earthly lives are measured by the passing of minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, seasons, and years. In His Divine wisdom, God has ordered time so that day and night, months and seasons all serve the purpose of life. The Bible tells us, "There is a given time for everything and a time for every happening under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). The core lesson of times and seasons is the need to be vigilant at all times and to grow in faith and love every day. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta keenly observed that love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand. Author Robert H. Smith wrote a poem called The Clock of Life. It reads: “The clock of life is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just where the hands will stop, at late or early hour. To lose one's wealth is sad indeed, to lose one's health is more. To lose one's soul is such a loss as no man can restore. The present only is our own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in 'tomorrow' For the clock may then be still.” The poem’s implication is that our earthly journey is transitory and that tomorrow is promised to no one.

The clock of life is wound just once when we are born. Our human hearts all have a finite number of beats and only God knows how long each will function. It could be for many years or just a few. In between, we will hopefully experience many times and changes of seasons before we are called home to be united with our Divine Savior. Every day is a gift from God and as virtuous Catholic Gentlemen we know His gift culminates with the gift of everlasting life with Him and all the saints in Heaven. But to earn this special gift we must keep perspective and focus in our lives, safeguard our souls, and avail ourselves of His saving grace.

Evangelist Billy Graham once remarked that, “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.” I recently was fortunate to be present at a funeral service to witness something I had not seen happen before in the numerous funerals I have attended over the years. A young boy’s sobbing mother had just concluded the eulogy for his grandmother when he unexpectedly left his pew and joined her at the ambo. With help from his mom, the brave young boy stepped up and faced the microphone. You could tell by the looks on the faces of the audience (including the boy’s parents) that they were questioning what was going to happen next. I think that we were all amazed when out of the boy’s mouth came, “I went to wake-up my grandma. She was sleeping and I could not wake her up. Then later some people came and took her away. Then she went to heaven.” After finishing the above, he returned to his pew, leaving all of us astounded. My Brothers, he was too young and not aware of it, but he was showing a lot of character and faith, along with a proper perspective for his age about what happens when the clock of life stops and our eternal life begins. The Creation –Author Unknown

When God had made the earth and sky, the flowers and the trees, He then made all the animals the fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He’d finished not one was quite the same. He said, “I’ll walk this world of mine and give each one a name.”

And so He traveled far and wide and everywhere He went, a little creature followed Him until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea, the little creature said, “Dear Lord, there’s not one left for me.”

Kindly the Father said to him, “I’ve left you to the end. I’ve turned my own name back to front and called you dog, my friend.”
