PALM GREENS PULSE February 2019 Delray Beach, Florida CONDO 2 by Peter Dreifus We would like to thank Karen Lee for her service as a Board member and an excellent secretary. We would like to thank Marna Hirshhorn, Nancy Miles, Jill Rothman, Bobby Brath, Lynda Sherman and Judy Goldberg for their help in counting the ballots. Also, our excellent staff, Gabe Martinez, Audi Hartley and Rejeanna Occenat for managing the process. The successful candidates were, incumbents Bob Atchick, myself and our new addition, Sandra Klimas. Sandra’s background is in public and private school administration where she gained extensive experience in managing large financial budgets, overseeing major building expansions/renovations, participating on negotiation teams and working with diverse groups of stakeholders to build consensus on difficult issues. She has also served on boards that had both fiduciary and advisory responsibilities including the United Way, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, Kaleida Health System (her local hospital Board) and New York State School Improvement Board. In her letter of candidacy, she wrote, “My main goals will be to build on the success of the Palm Greens Condo 2 Board, support the current clubs and activities and find new ways to provide a welcoming environment for future and current residents living in Palm Greens.” She is committed to being accessible, engaged and proactive in making decisions that will affect our community. I want to wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year. 2019 will be, hopefully, a very different year than 2018. We had, and still have, an extended government shutdown, hopefully over by the time you are reading this article. There have been many, too many mass killings, but it is now 2019 (WOW how time flies) and we welcome it with hope and optimism Possibly, by the time this article is published, the vote will be out for the approval of the 13th Floor proposal. Dear fellow Palm Greeners. At the time of writing this article,

it is 2019. I want to wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year. 2019 will be, hopefully, a very different

year than 2018. We had, and still have, an extended government shutdown, hopefully over by the time you are reading this article. There have been many, too many mass killings, but it is now 2019 (WOW how time flies) and we welcome it with hope and optimism

Possibly, by the time this article is published, the vote will be out for the approval of the 13th Floor proposal. The board asks you to not only VOTE, but to vote an intelligent and informed vote, and weigh the positives and any negatives.

Although December was a cool month, January seems to be shaping up as a more typical Florida month. So get out and enjoy the sun and all the activities we have available at Palm Greens.

The board is always welcoming suggestions, valid complaints, and just a hello. Someone on the board is usually in the Condo 1 office every week day, except, possibly, Friday.

In the New Year I, once again, want to thank Doug and his crew for their great work keeping Palm Greens beautiful and efficient. I also want to thank the ladies in the Condo 1 office, Debbie and Theresa, for not only supporting the board on a daily basis, but also supporting the residents.

EDITORIAL FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR

by Mel Clapman

Before I start, I want to thank the people who sought me out to congratulate me on the January editorial regarding the 13th

Floor project. Thank you. It was a labor of love as I am obviously a big proponent for this project to become a reality. So just to review, the high points of approving the project are:

• Delray Trails at Palm Greens will be a new, all-residential, age-restricted (55+) community made possible through the redevelopment of the shuttered Villa Delray golf course.

• Delray Trails at Palm Greens will include a new amenity campus and best-in-class clubhouse open to Palm Greens residents; improved property values; preservation of a 55+ active adult lifestyle; ample lakes and landscape buffers with over 50% of the property preserved as open space; over 3+ miles of fitness trails; improved storm water retention to alleviate flooding issues; additional tennis and pickle-ball courts; and ultimately, the removal of the cloud of uncertainty that exists over the property today.

• If Delray Trails at Palm Greens is approved, in addition to the above amenities, the 13th Floor has offered to contribute one million dollars – $500,000 to each Condo -- to help augment the repairs and maintenance of the respective properties. PLUS…they will absorb the entire cost of the legal fees incurred by Palm Greens for the many meetings that took place during the finalization of this project. (Please read

RECREATION BOARDby Thomas Aldrich

Here we are, another February already, with most people back to Palm Greens.

Please remember not to throw away your café cards as they will be refilled every January 1st. The café card will not be available on December 31st after 3:00pm so the cards can be refilled. There should be a kid’s menu by now and there will be a summer menu during the off season.

We just completed our first mixer for new residents. This included recent properties which changed hands. We apparently missed some folks who inherited their property and were left out. This was unintentional. The purpose of the get together was to introduce people to the clubs and classes available and also to allow additional people to meet some of our wonderful vendors. 13th Floor was well represented and answered many questions regarding the development which we will be voting on.

It is important that we support our clubs whether it be sports, the arts or fun and games. We want to keep these clubs going. The Women’s Club supports the Milagro Center on Auburn Avenue in Delray Beach. You may want to check them out as they are worth supporting. They will be one of the Charities benefiting from the Super Bowl Bash in the clubhouse on Superbowl Sunday of course.

In our meetings we have stated that we have an older building and the infrastructure has continuing issues. We have resolved the issues with the elevator with an inexpensive fix. Our fans at the pool are experiencing problems due to metal fatigue and are being repaired and hopefully completed by this issue.

Please remember, there is an important vote ahead on our cooperation with the Golf Course development. It does not matter if you are for or against, please vote. As of this writing a vote schedule is very close and if not already announced it is forthcoming. As always there are a lot of rumors regarding why it has taken so long. To be honest it is longer than I ever expected but we are all working for the best deal for us and of course the developer is protecting their rights as well. In a way it is beneficial because the majority of people should be here during the voting process. If you go north prior to the release of the proxies please make sure your condo office has the correct address and also please make sure your mail is forwarded properly.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE

by Walter Jacobson

It is February 2019 and the Palm Greens Entertainment Committee continues to provide monthly shows in the Palm Greens clubhouse.

These shows are entertaining, reasonably priced and conveniently located in our clubhouse and are followed by complementary refreshments. We encourage you to support functions like this so that they may continue to be available.

The fourth show of this season will feature comedian Ken Block and singer Jamie Danger on February 16, 2019 at 8PM in the Palm Greens Clubhouse.

Ken Block was voted Las Vegas Impressionist of the Year. He does over 100 impressions of actors, entertainers and politicians. He has performed on TV, cruise ships, and corporate events around the US. As a young man, Ken started out with the hope of becoming a professional baseball player with the NY Yankees. However, while in college he noticed that while girls were attracted to athletes, they were also attracted to someone at his Florida college that was doing impressions. Goodbye baseball, hello comedy.

Jamie Danger was born in Brooklyn. Her bio says she could sing before she could talk. She graduated from Hofstra and the Lee Strassburg Acting Institute. She spent many years working in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area before coming to South Florida. She has performed on cruise ships and in various condo communities. She is both dynamic and also very funny.

Appropriate casual attire is expected: NO shorts, please.

Ticket prices will remain at $18 per ticket. Ticket sales for the February 16, 2019 8:00 PM show

will be held on Monday, February 11, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon and Tuesday, February 12, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Ticket sales are always in the clubhouse. If still available, tickets may be purchased at the clubhouse right before the show, or by calling Joan Jacobson (637-2275.)

MEN’s CLuB by Mort Teisch

Our January 6 meeting attended by the members and their spouses and their significant others was met with great satisfaction. The program consisted of the well-known speaker, Gloria Shapiro, who spoke about the influences of mothers of Presidents Kennedy, Ford, Clinton, and Carter. It appeared to be of interest to all attending.

Normally, we prefer to have our Men’s Club meeting on the first Sunday of the month. However in lieu of Super Bowl Sunday on February 3, we will hold the February meeting on February 10, still the same time at 10AM, and still with breakfast and entertainment. We will be featuring Danny K. with songs of Broadway and Sinatra.

While we have placed orders on a number of Men’s Club shirts, we will still be taking further orders. Just think, you’ll never have to wonder what to wear to a Men’s Club meeting.

As a result of our early deadline, it will be too soon to give the results of our golf match against our arch-enemy, Emerald Pointe. We feel bad, beating such nice people, but let’s do it anyway. The results will be published in next month’s Pulse.

It’s almost that time for the cry of “Play Ball” and while the schedules are not out yet, we will keep you apprised of the arrangement for our March spring training baseball game. Since Passover comes out late this year, I would like the thoughts of the members as well as the non-members in attending a Marlins regular season game. Let me know.

I’m planning to attend the Super Bowl party at the clubhouse on February 3. Please join me. Then let’s get together on the 10th for our regular meeting. Check Channel 63 for your reminders.

Happy Valentines Day to all. Whether that special person is your mate, date or BFF, it is all good. Friends are the best healthcare around! The January Alliance meeting dealt with topics like Keeping Palm Beach County clean (graffiti) and a presentation by the Solid Waste Authority on New Contracts/Automation and the garbage can sizes.

A representative from the Solid Waste Authority (SWA) explained that Palm Beach County SWA will be automated by October 2019. Customers will be provided with a 48, 65, or 98-gallon garbage container (cart). The cart size will be determined by the individual association communities. All garbage must be placed inside the container to be collected twice weekly. Since the collection will be automated, NO plastic bags that are not in the container will be collected. Bulk service will be provided one day per week, 3 items maximum. Construction debris limited to 2 cubic yards per week will

We w o u l d like to thank Tony DeNiro for chairing the Tennis Committee and getting the rotation program up and running again. This program is unique to Palm Greens and is a great welcoming start to all new residents who want to play tennis. Thank you for a smooth transition.

We would like to introduce ourselves as the new Co-Chairs of the Tennis Committee. I’m Bev Clapman and our Co-Chair is Bob Krokus. If you have been part of the tennis program for any length of time, then you are familiar with our faces as we are both Co-Captains of our Inter-Condo teams, and you can always find us on the courts.

By the time you read this we will have completed 5 weeks of the Inter-Condo competition and hopefully all of our teams are doing well. As I am writing this we are in the process of getting our first event of the season off the ground, our Annual Mixed Doubles Round Robin Tournament. We hope you had a good time.

Our next event is scheduled for February 24 which will be our “4 Pros Coaching” Session. So sign up and receive great free lessons in four categories of the game. I can personally say that Gerard helped me improve my serve.

Bob and I are new to our positions but with the help of our Tennis Committee we hope to make tennis as much fun for you as it is for all of us. We bring our love of the game to all the decisions we make in the hope of providing an atmosphere of good sportsmanship and camaraderie, both on and off the courts.

The Committee will be available to address any concerns and suggestions you may have so don’t hesitate to reach out to us. All our names and email addresses will be posted by the bulletin board outside the tennis office.

When you feel the need for additional professional lessons, see Jim Boardman - our Palm Greens tennis pro. Jim provides reasonably-priced individual or group lessons, and free group clinic lessons twice a week Beginners Tuesdays, 11:30am. Intermediates Fridays, 11:30am. Please check in with Jim before attending. Jim

THE HEALTH ROOMby Mel Clapman

Why Music Has Health Benefits for SeniorsMusic has the unmistakable power to fire up the

brain’s recall abilities. It makes us feel emotions from certain times in our lives and brings back memories almost as if we were reliving them.

Here is why this happens: When you hear a catchy song, your brain neurons light up. Later, when you hear the same song again, those original memory patterns are automatically strengthened. The more often you hear it, the more permanent the connections between the neurons in the pattern become.

Health Benefits of MusicNational studies have proven that seniors involved

in the arts improve physically and mentally. One recent study that was done on people with dementia in nursing homes showed that using music personalized to each person decreased the number of anti-psychotics and anti-anxiety drugs they needed to be on, as well as reduced behavior issues.

Music has the potential to reduce anxiety by calming neuron activity in the brain. It can reduce symptoms of

Hi everybody! The winter season is moving along. Aren’t we all so fortunate to be at beautiful Palm Greens as most of the country is suffering with cold weather, storms, etc.

We began the season with a Welcome Back reception and a great Holiday party. In January we celebrated the New Year at Westchester Country Club with a dinner dance with the theme of Red, White and Blue.

March will bring us to the main event, a beautiful dinner dance at Benvenuto. What a spectacular evening that promises to be! It is like a combination of a wedding reception and your senior prom. This is scheduled for March 25 at a cost of $60 per member. More information will be forthcoming in the March Pulse.

Remember, the Tennis Social Club is not just for tennis players. Everyone is invited to join, and you don’t have to have a partner!

POINTs OF INTEREsT FORPALM GREENERs

by Mel Clapman

If you live in Palm Greens you must have passed through Boynton Beach at least once. It’s just about 7 miles from where we live. But…have you ever looked into this quaint neighbor of Delray Beach and discover some of its hidden appeal? Well, let’s check it out

Boynton Beach boasts the perfect setting for outdoor activities. You can take a leisurely stroll and immerse yourself in the sights and wonderful vegetation at the National Wildlife Refuge. Or go diving with Boynton Beach’s favorite guide, Kevin, at Underwater Explorers, snorkel in Gulf Stream Park’s crystal clear waters, and indulge in Middle Eastern cuisine at the buzzing Zaza’s Fresh Mediterranean restaurant.

Starfish Scuba - 735 Casa Loma Blvd, Slip 11- 561-212-2954

This company runs daily SCUBA diving charters. Plunge in and enjoy a wide range of diving. Wreck diving, lobsters, underwater photography and spearfishing are just a few of the activities you’ll enjoy! Looking to learn how to dive? Want to expand on your diving knowledge? Starfish Scuba will instruct you from your very first dive through professional level.

Ham’r Time Sport Fishing Charters - 728 Casa Loma Blvd - 561-685-1207

You will love this fishing charter! No frills, but Captain Paul and First Mate John know what they are doing! First Mate John is known as the king of Grouper fishing and he will show you why, and then some!

Oceanfront Park Beach - 6415 N Ocean Blvd - 561-742-677

This beach has a small snack bar offering coffee, breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well as smoothies. The beach is guarded and has chairs for rent. Nice ramp to walk down to a great beach...lots of sand and water not too deep so you don’t have to worry too much for the kids.

RESTAURANTSHurricane Alley -529 E Ocean Ave - 561-364-4008A “kitchy” locals place where the beer is cold, the

welcome is warm and the food is home made. Hurricane Alley never disappoints. Go for lunch. Stay for happy hour. Hook and cook your own fish. Freshly roasted turkey and roast beef daily. (Oysters are really why it’s a favorite.) Go with an appetite, leave with new friends.

BOOK CLuBby Joan Zimmer

Join us on February 13 at 10:30 in the clubhouse as we discuss THE WIFE by Meg Wolitzer. Many of you have already seen the film starring Glen Close. Let’s see the differences between the film and the book. And let’s see what we would do if we were THE WIFE. Questions? 498-0102

Banana Boat Restaurant - 739 E Ocean Ave - 561-732-9400

The entire restaurant has been redone from the front door to the very back of the dining room. The place looks beautiful. If you have never been, the restaurant is on the intracoastal with indoor (air conditioning) or outdoor (covered but no air conditioning) seating. The food and service are good. We recommend the coconut shrimp.

Summing it up…Take advantage of visiting a go-to city that’s a stone’s throw from Palm Greens and have yourself a very nice time. Don’t forget to call in advance about opening times and prices.

FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIEby Sam Schleider

We show movies every Friday night, weather permitting. If we have inclement weather, the movie will be cancelled and it will be shown the next week. If movie night falls on a Friday which is a major holiday, we cancel the movie and show it the next week.

We would appreciate suggestions on what movie to order and if it is possible we will try to get the movie. Sometimes we receive the movies within a few weeks, and sometimes it may take months. We receive the movies from Netflix and once they are finished playing in the local movie houses, we may get them.

We advertise our movies on our Channel 63 and we also display the movies in the clubhouse on our bulletin boards.

We start our movies at 7 PM but since the movies that we receive have a ton of advertisement, we may start the movies a little before. Our movies are free for our residents and their guests. It is one of our great PERKS for living in PALM GREENS. If you want to meet your neighbors and friends come to our movies.

We have seats for 100 people, if you arrive early there is plenty of room, but if you arrive late the doors will be closed and no more room for people.

We prefer that food should be eaten at home, water is OK.

But our balcony will be closed ... county rule.

Thank you for not bringing drinks and food into the pool area. And thanks for cleaning up after you finish with your refreshments.

FROM THE TENNIs PROby Jim Boardman (USPTA)

One of the most common questions I’m asked is what effect string tension has on a racquet’s play. To understand the answer, take a look at what happens when the ball meets the racquet.

Tighter strings give you more control – when your strings are tighter, they will deflect less on impact. The ball, however, will “flatten out” more on your strings. More of your strings, therefore, are in contact with more of the ball. This is like more of your car’s tires being in contact with the road – better control results.

Keep in mind that what is “tighter” or “looser” tension for you may be different for someone else. The effects of string tension vary with the player, the type of racquet and the type of string. ALLIANCE ... (continued from page 5)

be collected on the bulk collection day. Tree branches and palm fronds should be neatly stacked in a pile not to exceed 6 cubic yards. Other vegetation such as leaves, tree and hedge trimmings and small dead plants should be contained in a garbage can, paper lawn or plastic bag, not to exceed 50 pounds. Use of the new, automated collection system will begin on October 1, 2019. More information can be obtained at the website www.swa.org or contact Customer Service at 561-697-2700.

V.P. Lori Vinikoor announced several upcoming events. She then informed the group of the positive impacts that the Alliance has recently made upon the area. Although only in the planning stages, after serious discussions with a developer, he has declined to build a gas station and convenience store at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and the Turnpike. Also, although long in the planning stage, the Alliance was able to reduce the size of a mixed use (commercial and residential) project at the corner of W. Atlantic Avenue and Hagen Ranch Road.

Our State Representative, Emily Slosberg, informed us that she is sponsoring two bills in the Florida Legislature. One bill to restrict target practice in residential areas and a 2nd bill to prohibit texting and using a hand-held cell phone while driving.

County Sheriff’s Office William Parks discussed the benefit of having a COPS (Citizen Observer Patrol) program in individual communities. The Sheriff’s office oversees over 80 communities and provides knowledge and assistance. The COPs office Palm Beach County boasts over 1500 volunteers and as a paramilitary organization is a proven crime deterrent. To volunteer as a driver, bicycle patrol, foot patrol, marine patrol, or even horse rider, etc., Call PBSO 561-688-3400.

PBSO Sergeant David Conklin’s topic was graffiti eradication. Creating graffiti is a misdemeanor, unless it espouses racism, anti-Semitism or similar hate sentiment or glorifies anti police, pro ISIS jihad sentiments. Then it is a felony. Why do 18 to 25 yr. olds do graffiti? Personal 15 minutes of fame, or to tag an area for various gangs, political statements, etc.

Detective Jeff Friedman spoke about environmental crimes. His department investigates illegal dumping. Examples include yard trash, construction debris, hazardous materials and tires. He provided information about how many of these offenders were caught!

One more reminder, we have open enrollment for changes in our health care plans . Open enrollment runs until 3/31/19. Even if you have selected new plans, you can still make changes until that date.

The next meeting of the Delray Alliance will be on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 and will Include Dorothy Jacks, Palm Beach County Property Appraiser and Anne Gannon, Constitutional Tax Collector. They will be providing updates on office services and exemption and Assessment trends.

Meetings take place at the South County Civic Center Civic Center, 16700 Jog Road, Delray Beach. Across from Morikami. Doors open at 9AM when refreshments are served. The meeting begins at 9:30 and always concludes by 11:30. All are welcome. See you there.

Follow the arrows in the parking lot and make sure you are driving in the right

direction.

WE CAREby Sam Schleider

Hi –Ho off to work we go. We did this for many years, until we became seniors and retired from working. Now we start looking for a place where seniors are welcome. Some of us enter Palm Greens community and they buy a condo. As the years pass they may be in need of assistance for their well-being and We Care is here to help.

They may need wheelchairs, walkers, canes and any other mechanical equipment or transportation to medical facilities. Palm Greens has one of the best perks in We Care organization, they are staffed by volunteers. Our residents will be in need of We Care and we will always need volunteers to help our residents.

There may be a time when volunteers will be scarce and We Care may have to hire people to do the work that volunteers did for residents. If that time ever comes our maintenance for the condo will have to be increased to pay for We Care workers.

As of now we do not charge for any equipment or transportation to medical facilities and we hope never to charge. If you are in need of our services please call our telephone 561-495-0878.

When calling We Care for your needs please leave your name and your telephone number so that we may respond to your call.

upfront cost of constructing the amenity campus. The ongoing maintenance budget has been designed so that dues will not go up and that the Palm Greens community will retain a majority vote in setting budgets once the 13thFloor has turned over the association after sellout.

Please think it out and think about voting YES on this project. It will have a very positive effect for Palm Greens and an equally positive effect on your lives. THE PALM GREENS MEET& GREET EVENT

If you were invited to the “Meet and Greet” event of January then please note you were one (or 2) of over 200 new residents who attended what you have to know was “a party and a half! You heard it right, over 200 people walked into our ballroom and were treated to music – a wonderful piano player – desserts to die for, door prizes to boggle the mind and an introduction to almost one dozen managers of the Palm Greens clubs and associations. Some of the photos are on page 15.One by one they were called up by Chris Sadej, our property manager, and gave a brief but succinct description of their club and the benefits of becoming members. In retrospect, it is nice to be living in a community with so many activities and programs …all there for the use of our residents…all designed to expand your knowledge base and give you something that’s mind-expanding and, at the same time, appealing. Makes for great conversation during Happy Hour!

AN OBsERVATIONby Sam Schleider

It has been almost 80 years since the end of WW2, and the discovery of the crime that was committed by the Nazi Regime against humanity is mind boggling.

During the war 50 million people lost their lives. 11 million were killed in concentration camps, 6 million were Jews, one and a half million were Jewish children, the other five million were prisoners of war mainly Russian, gypsies, mentally unbalanced, some Catholic priests and communists.

These people were not criminals, they did not com-mit any crime but they were gassed or shot and cre-mated in ovens.

I belong to an organization of survival that will try as long as we live to go to schools and tell the students about this crime against the Jewish people and against humanity.

In history we learned that there were many other holocausts. In the past, starting with the Crusades, the

killing and taking all the Indian land, the Killing of Ar-menians by the Turks in 1918 and now the genocide against the Rohingya people by the Myanmar regime.

If we don’t speak now about the great crime of the Holocaust against the Jewish people to our children, and our grandchildren, this kind of crime against humanity will continue as other crimes have been forgotten.

We who survived are slowly disappearing from go-ing to schools and speaking to students, we were chil-dren and now we are in our 80s and 90s.

There are people who say that this kind of killing never happened, that is why we urge all school districts, to establish a Holocaust study program that it should never be forgotten like other Holocaust killings are for-gotten.

Live Holocausts witnessed are better than reading about the Holocaust from books or newspapers. In 20 years there won’t be any survivors left, but there will be a 2nd and a 3rd generation of our children and grand-children and they will make sure that it will never again happen.
