The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
First Reading John 12:12–19
12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to
Jerusalem. 13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out,
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14And
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they
remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17The
crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the
dead continued to bear witness. 18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they

heard he had done this sign. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are
gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Confession and Absolution
Kneel/Stand
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
Confession
P People of God, Jesus is not the King we expected, He is powerful, strong and He has kept
His promise to deliver us from sin, death, and the devil. Do you believe this?
C Yes, we believe that Jesus' greatest triumph was not His entry into Jerusalem, but His
entry into our lives, His willingness to be our Father despite our sinful rebellion
against His eternal rule, and His forgiveness of the evil we enact in this world every
day.
Absolution
P People of God, Jesus is not the King we expected, riding into town on a brilliant white
stallion, parading his power all around town, making a big show of his greatness and acts
of mercy toward those lesser than himself.
Rather, Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son, Jesus our Savior, "lowly and riding on
a donkey" (Zech. 9:9), to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.
As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all
your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Second Reading John 12:20–26
20Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21So these came
to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip
went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23And Jesus answered them,
“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain
of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal
life. 26If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If
anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Let us pray.
Almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon
Himself our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross. Mercifully grant that we may follow
the example of His great humility and patience and be made partakers of His resurrection;
through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
C Amen.
A Liturgy for an Empty Table
P Holy Father, this table is yours, though empty and devoid of guests...
C Let not our hearts be led into mourning: the table in our heavenly home is set and full
of honored guests.
P Heavenly Father, I’ve labored for what I thought was your glory...
Grace Lutheran Church of Santa Maria
C All has become empty vanity, a party for no one.
P Compassionate Lord, fill these chairs, this table, this gathering place with your people...
C So that our celebrations might be a reminder that we indeed belong to a family of the
Kingdom of God, people brought together so that we might, in your physical absence
Heavenly King, be reminded that you intend to wrap us in your loving arms, and your
forgiving embrace.
P Until that time, when your kingdom and reign are known by all, hold us firm in the security
that comes from your power alone.
C Amen.
Epistle Philippians 2:5–11
5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the
form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but made himself
nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in
human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on
a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above
every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel John 12:27–36
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter.
27“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for
this purpose I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from
heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29The crowd that stood there and heard it
said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30Jesus answered, “This
voice has come for your sake, not mine. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler
of this world be cast out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to
myself.” 33He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34So the crowd
answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say
that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35So Jesus said to them, “The
light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness

overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36While
you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Lord’s Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.

Sacramental Liturgy: A Meal Eaten Alone
P You created us for companionship,
O God, for the sharing of burdens,
Grace Lutheran Church of Santa Maria
For the joining of celebrations,
For the breaking of bread in fellowship,
And so it is not unnatural
That we should taste a particular sorrow
When eating a meal alone.
C In the absence of human companions
May I know more fully presence.
In this silence where there is no conversation,
May I more clearly hear your voice.
P Use my own momentary loneliness
To work in me a more effectual sympathy
For others who are often alone,
And who long for the companionship
Of their God and of His people.
C Let me afterward be more intentional
In the practice of hospitality
Let me sometimes be the reason
The loneliness of another is relieved.
Meet me now in my own loneliness, O Lord.
Meet me in this meal, I receive it as your
Provision for my life in this hour.
Amen.

P The Lord God of heaven and earth is not the King we expected, but He is good. As the
prophet Isaiah declared:
C Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
My chosen, in whom my soul delights:
I have put my spirit upon him;
He will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
Grace Lutheran Church of Santa Maria
Or make it heard in the street;
A bruised red he will not break,
And a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
He will faithfully bring forth justice,
He will not grow faint or be discouraged
Till he has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands wait for his law. Isaiah 42:1-4
Benediction LSB 166
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.
C Amen.
