FROM THE PASTOR… Today’s gospel before the blessing of the palms, is filled with sound and color and pageantry. Jesus is riding into Jerusalem and the air is filled with heat and dust and noise. People are shou ng at him. “Hosanna!” And as Jesus moves through the crowd, the people ask each other, “Who is he?” The answer: “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of Galilee.” You might wonder, what is all the shou ng about? At last, they are experiencing the hope that comes with a prophet entering his city and the promise of change, of new life. They shout “Hosanna to the Son of David,” to the one who “comes in the name of the Lord.” As Pope Francis recently said, in Jerusalem and in today’s world, Je-sus “awakens great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgo en, those who do not ma er in the eyes of the world." With that feeling of Palm Sunday hope and joy in my heart, I’d like to reach out to all of the families who’ve joined the parish this past year, and also those families who worship with us but have not had a chance to register yet. Welcome all of you, to our family of faith. Thank you for choosing to walk with the Communi es of Faith here at Mission San Luis Rey. We are six dis nct communi es following Christ hand in hand, connected by the call of St. Francis of Assisi to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our brother. Old Mission San Luis Rey, Retreat Cen-ter, Mission San Luis Rey Parish, the Franciscan School of Theology, the Cemetery at San Luis Rey and the Old Mission Montessori School welcome you and walk with you as you step out on your jour-ney of faith with us. May our Father, the God of peace and joy, help us to con nue to follow Jesus all the days of our lives, recognizing Him as the one who con nues to come in the name of the Father, bringing life. Peace, Fr. David

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Most Chris ans today receive a bunch of palm fronds, olive branches, or forsythia (a rela ve of the olive) to carry in procession and to bear home in blessing. Some even offer sprigs of palm or other branches as a gesture of peace to those they have offended. The desire is to make a clean sweep of your spiritual house before the Easter feast. Accep ng the branch is a token of the bearer’s willingness to journey with the Church through a grateful remembrance of Jesus Christ’s passion, death, and life-giving resurrec on. Tradi onally, the plants associated with today’s feast are planted in cemeteries as a sign of Christ’s victory over death and the promise of new life. The joy of this day’s opening procession soon gives way to a solemn reading of the Passion, this year according to Ma hew. The ritual is meant not only to strengthen us to hear this account, but to s r us up to accompany the Church on this journey through Holy Week. It also prepares us for next Sun-day’s joyful renewal of our bap smal vows.

One item is the Holy Week Book by Eileen Freeman which provides an overview of the special liturgies for the week. There is also a DVD on the Lent and Easter season. Over the last few weeks, we have added to our media materials- DVD’s on Jesus, Mary, Saints, Theology and other items for your spiritual nourishment. Come by and set what is new-many of these items are also available in Spanish. Do you have any items from our Parish Library? Now is a good me to return any items.

THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST JESUS

The Lenten cycle brings us to this “mixed” Sunday of palm branches and pain-ful suffering. Our liturgy opens by recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry along the main road into Jerusalem, then moves quickly to the

back streets of betrayal and humilia on, the court-yards of torture and abandonment, the hill of execu-

on. Isaiah’s strange and gripping “Song of the Servant of God” was to become the song of Jesus. It is the song of one who strides forward consistently in the face of cri cism, even scorn: “I have not rebelled, have not turned back.” It is to become our song, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ. How are we to react when we hear the account of the passion and death of the Lord? Paul tells us that our a tude must be Christ’s, who “emp ed himself, taking the form of a slave.” We pray that we may absorb the a tude of Christ, and face life squarely in its triumph and its pain.

¿cómo vas a orar?
