Dear Palms Magazine Readers,

It is our pleasure to share some very good news with all of our members of Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We will be starting a million dollar investment to renovate the clubhouse in the spring of 2013. The project is an investment of considerable magnitude and is expected to allow us to better serve our members today and update our clubhouse for the future. This large-scale undertaking will reinvent the member dining experience at the Club, with the overall scope of the project expected to include:

• Renovated entrance and lobby including new furnishings

• New and expanded bar and dining area, perfect for socializing

• New outdoor patio and dining area with fire pits

• New high-tech media lounge – catch the game or watch current events

• An exclusive wine room

As you can imagine, the discussions around this project have been very exciting. This reinvention will help ensure that our facility is relevant to members’ lifestyles and will greatly enhance the experience that we provide to all of you, our members and

guests. The significant updates will also help keep our club competitive in the marketplace. We are confident that you will share our enthusiasm for these revitalizing plans as you see the changes taking place.

The project will begin in the next couple of months with details to come. Renderings for the renovations will be displayed throughout the Club. As details about each new stage of the project become available, we will share them with our Board of Governors and the general membership. Keep in mind that as the project progresses, there will undoubtedly be circumstances that require modifications to the initial plan. At this point, the construction schedule has not been finalized beyond more than the actual scope of the improvements. During construction, the Club will continue to operate to serve our members, and the entire team of Employee Partners will work to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.

We are thrilled to move forward and committed to keeping you well-informed about the project and pertinent details to improve our Club in the coming year. Please contact David Kupstas via e-mail [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you in advance for your support.David Kupstas, General Manager.

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is recognized as a state leader for Florida species conservation and biodiversity. The Zoo is the only wildlife center in the world where you can find the most comprehensive collection of Florida’s endangered native species including a fully operational Manatee Hospital unlike any in the Country. In addition to Florida wildlife, the Zoo is home to many species endangered or threatened in the wild from habitats similar to our own -- Africa, Asia, Australia, and Central and South America. Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo also participates in nearly 40 Species Survival Plans (SSPs), cooperative breeding and conservation programs managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to carefully maintain healthy, self-sustaining captive populations. To date, the Zoo’s global conservation initiatives have been successful in the rescue, rehabilitation, release, research and protection of many species, including restoration and expansion of prime

species habitat and the support of community education and outreach programs.

Please join us on Sunday, March 3rd at Noon for a Karamu Kickoff Brunch. Educators from the Lowry Park Zoo will be here with several different live animals for everyone to interact with and learn more about. Karate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the

art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

Stretchingby Joanna van der Laan Stretching is highly recommended - Stretching can be done either before or after your workout. Corrective stretching is done after a warm up and before exercise, to lengthen chronically short muscles and to help keep your body in proper alignment. Relaxation stretching is done after exercise to lengthen muscles and to help them return to their pre-workout length. Both types of stretching are good, should be done regularly when muscles are warm, and should always feel comfortable and painless.

Benefits of StretchingThis article was provided by Find My Fitness Trainer

The body is flexible. It is supposed to be flexible. You must be able to bend and reach that something you dropped on the floor. You must be able to zip up the back of your favorite dress on your own. You must be able to reach that book you need to read, way up there on the top shelf. These are simple activities. Nothing special about

them; you merely stretched out a bit. However, if you have difficulties doing simple everyday activities, then you have to stretch your limits - you need a stretching program. What Is Stretching?Stretching is simply the act of elongating or contracting groups of muscles, and straightening or bending a body’s limbs to reach a good range of motion. How Does a Person Stretch?Stretching is fairly easy. As mentioned in the introduction, it is needed in the normal activities of everyday life. But it can also be done by almost anyone, regardless of age.

However, the extent of stretching and flexing differs. The muscles tighten as a person ages. The range of joint movements can be minimized the older a person gets. That is why as a person grows older, bending or flexing becomes more difficult. But this is also why stretching regularly, as part of a daily routine, is very important. It can be incorporated into daily activities, and it does not require much of your time.

Stretching exercises can also be done while training. Stretching is an essential part of any training or sport. It is recommended to warm up lightly, for about 5 minutes, before stretching. There is actually an ideal length of time for stretching. About 10 minutes will give the body enough opportunity to move and flex the muscles, thus preparing it for more complicated and strenuous movements. What Are the Benefits of Stretching?

1. Increased Range of Movement. The length of muscles and tendons is increased by regular stretching exercises. This will assist in increasing the range of movement. If limbs and joints are able to move, it will be more comfortable to do daily activities, as well as exercise.

2. Increased Ability to Perform Skills. When you have a wider range of motion, you will simply be able to

do more things. For example, you can jump without feeling much pain when you land back on the floor. This will also help you start a new sport or to improve if you are already in one. Stretching will simply allow you to have a more active lifestyle, and will make you feel more confident in your body.

3. Injury Prevention. One can prevent injury to joints, tendons and muscles with regular stretching. When the muscles and tendons are well-flexed, they are considered in good working order. If you exercise, this will result in faster recovery times and decreased soreness after working out. If they are flexible, the muscles of the body will be able to take more rigorous movements with less probability of being injured.

4. Reduced Muscle Tension. If the muscles are given their regular exercises and stretching, it is less likely that they will contract. This will really reduce muscle pain or problems. Also, many people are now sitting at desks for 8-10 hours each day. Our bodies are simply not designed for sitting in one place for that long. Stretching will help to ease tension built up by hunching over a computer and desk all day, every day.

5. Enhanced Energy. Being able to move more will also give you more energy. Stretching will help enhance your awareness. Knowing that you have a body that is capable of doing many things will make you more driven to move rather than to sit on the couch.

6. Reduced Cholesterol. Research also shows that doing prolonged stretching exercises, like yoga, will help reduce the cholesterol in the body when following a healthy diet. This could prevent and even reverse hardening of the arteries, allowing you to reduce your chance of developing coronary diseases.

Incorporate stretching in your everyday lifestyle. The benefits are undeniable. It also does not require much time or energy. Your health is everything, so do what it takes to keep your body healthy.

Class HighlightNew Class Added To Our Group Fitness ScheduleStretch for Flexibility: Come and join our trainer Debbie Brenner for a 60min Stretch for Flexibility class every Thursday at 8 am. Take time to stretch head to toe. This class will be a combination of standing, seated and floor stretches. Stretching plays a vital role in keeping muscles and joints strong and pliable so they are less susceptible to injury. This class is suitable for all ages and all fitness levels.

tennis Tennis Tip of the MonthBy Thomas Judson, Head Tennis Professional

We are really quite obsessed with working on our weaknesses. We want to improve shots we don’t feel very confident in. We want to hit that backhand technically correct. We want the volley to feel confident. We would like to add those extra miles per hour on the serve. This is all good but sometimes we forget that when match play comes around we need to focus on our STRENGTHS!!

Some opponents know your weaknesses and will try to hit most of the shots to them. That does not mean you have to take that shot on.

Continued from page 8 Run around that backhand to hit your forehand if that is your strength.

Play your strengths! Win more matches!

Tampa Palms Jr. Tennis AcademyQuICKSTArT TENNISThe USTA has passed new rules governing competition for 10 and under tennis tournaments. The new rules require that 10 and under tennis be played using slower moving and lower bouncing ball on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter rackets.

10 and Under Tennis is designed around the same concepts as Little League Baseball and other Youth Sports such as soccer and basketball, all of which use equipment and court/field sizes scaled to the size of young children. This allows children to achieve success the first time out, and, sustain that success as they continue to develop their skills. Quickstart: This is a new format for 10 and under children just learning to play Tennis. It is designed to bring kids into the game utilizing a shorter court , smaller rackets, and lighter balls.

2 Star: The player has received previous instruction and is familiar with the basic strokes such as forehand, backhand and volley. The player is in need of developing service, overhead and improving rallying skills. 3 Star: Player has received previous instruction and is familiar with all strokes. Player has begun to develop strokes to include spins and placement and can maintain a rally beyond 4 shots. This player has begun to formulate some basic playing strategies. Footwork and proper technique is emphasized in this class. Tournament Tough: This is an invitation only class designed for players dedicated to improving their tennis games in preparation for tournament and or league play. Footwork, proper technique, drills, strategy and match play is heavily emphasized in this class.

Advanced Academy: Oriented primarily toward competitive High School tennis players, this brand new (invitation only) class will emphasize the development of those skills necessary to compete at the High School level. Focusing on tennis-specific fitness/hitting drills, shot selection, and situational match strategies will be the priorities in Tampa Palms most intense and highest level class.

AsK thE EXPErts

Is it a buyer’s market or a seller’s market in Hillsborough County?

Indicators are pointing to a seller’s market with housing inventories hitting a 6 year low. At the end of December 2012, there were 3.3 months of inventory (6,727 properties) available compared to December of 2011, with 6.1 months (11,229 properties) available.

Following the natural law of supply and demand, and interest rates at a historic low, this is giving more buyer’s the opportunity to afford a home therefore creating more buyers and not enough homes for sale, therefore rising prices.

What constitutes a seller’s market? It’s generally accepted that 5 to 7 months of inventory is considered a balanced market. Under 5 months is a seller’s market, and 3.5 months or less, is a hard seller’s market. With levels as they were at the end of December at 3.3 months (6,727 properties), we are in a hard seller’s market. How much have home prices actually gone up in the past 12 months?

Dec. 2011 Average List Price $167,779Dec. 2012 Average List Price$183,994 Dec. 2011 Average Sold Price $158,912

What a Difference a Year Makes!

Dec. 2012 Average Sold Price$177,339 That’s a 16% increase!! How do I determine a list price for my home?

Your Realtor can you help you establish value by completing a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA). This report will consider other similar properties that have sold in the past 90 days in your immediate area. Adjustments will be made for various features that the comparable property (sold properties) have inferior or superior to the subject property (your home). Some features that constitute an adjustment are a pool, larger/smaller square footage, additional bathrooms, fireplace, etc. This will give you a good idea of the price range for your home.

What advice do you have for buyers and sellers in this market?

Each client has different goals and objectives, so it’s best to sit down and review all your options and see what’s best for you and your family in the current market conditions. For more information please contact Dyana Metcalf with Florida Executive Realty at 15802 Amberly Drive in Tampa Palms, or call 813-205-2896. Her email is [email protected].

taMPa rotaract cluB

rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for dedicated volunteers ages

18 to 30, who want to make the world a better place. Their goals are self development and fellowship through service. They strive to better our local and international

communities while growing as leaders and young professionals.

They meet the first Wednesday at The Green Lemon on South Howard and the third Wednesday at Avalon Heights at 7:30 pm. Rotaract is a global network of

young people who are changing the world with clubs in over 160 countries.

Their recent volunteer events have included:

Sweetwater Organic FarmsThey recently helped Sweetwater Organic Farms, a community-supported urban organic farm and environmental education center, harvest and wash vegetables in order to distribute them to members of the farm and promote organic and sustainable farming.

Feeding AmericaThey went to the Feeding America warehouse in south Tampa, along with the Rotary Club of New Tampa Evening, in order to sort and pack donated food.

Gasparilla 5KThey volunteered at the 5K to distribute water to the participants during and after the event.

Mud run, Benefiting the Humane SocietyRotaract members assisted at the obstacle course-style marathon. They have chosen to focus on animal welfare as their main focus of service this year.

Peace river refuge

On the topic of animal welfare, they are currently planning a day trip to Silver Springs where they can help the Peace River Refuge Forest Animal Rescue build its sanctuary. The sanctuary is in the midst of a relocation and they have contacted the owners to discuss the Tampa Rotaract Club helping build habitats for the various animals they care for like wolves, bears, primates, etc.

Their Social events have included:

A Pancake Party:Last month they had a pancake party, where members brought different toppings and they all made their “ideal” pancakes by mixing and matching the toppings into the batter. It was a lot of fun, despite the mess!

Bowling:Members went bowling (after volunteering at Feeding America) in order to promote the fellowship within their club, and show off their bowling skills, or lack thereof.

Anyone who is interested in attending meetings or events please contact the club via email at [email protected], or call Richard Crouse at 386-336-6348. Or you can “like” the club’s facebook page and inquire though that. v

ALL PrO DADS

Fathers and their children met at Liberty Middle School on February 5th as part of the All Pro Dads project, a nationwide initiative. Founded by former Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy and supported by both the National PTA and Liberty

Middle’s PTSA, All Pro Dad’s Day seeks to make a positive impact in communities, schools, and families.

Monthly breakfast meetings are held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria or media center. During this time, they discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and are equipped with resources to strengthen their relationships. This month’s topic was “Making Things Better for Mom.”

All Pro Dads meetings at Liberty Middle School will be on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 am in the school’s Media Center. The next meeting will be on March 5th. For more information about this program, please visit allprodad.com/dads-day.

Dear Families, During the month of March and April we enter fully into the season of standardized testing. We look at standardized testing as Our Time to Shine! On testing days it is especially important that you child arrive to school on time, is well rested, and eats breakfast either at home or at school. On testing nights, you may want to consider reducing extra-curricular night events so that you child is ready to “show all they know”!

Don’t forget to give your child a big hug on test days. This will increase her sense of well-being and energy.
