Y es, I know, it feels like summer, but that is OK.
This Florida girl loves the heat. I think I am out numbered though.
We had a great response to the two contests we are running. The cover photos were coming in fast. However, we had a computer crash here and most of the photos that were sent in were lost. Our hearts just sank and we ask that all residents that sent in the photos to PLEASE do so again. There was one of a baby with an Easter outfit on and I so regret it being lost. We will hold off on this month’s contest winner till everyone can resend their photos.
There were four correct entries for the hidden picture contest. We put the names in a bowl and drew out the winner, who is: Jenny Joo. Congratulations! Jenny wins a $25 gift card to Applebee’s. The hidden rainbow was in Dr. Duga’s ad. Everyone can try again each month, there is no limit. The hidden picture for April to hunt for is a solid blue easter egg.
As always, send in your photos, news, stories and announcements. Palm Magazine is all about YOU!
Happy Easter & Earth Day!!!

The ever DreaDeD Bunker ShoT
There are various techniques for getting out of sand, but using the same principle as the flop shot is very effective. The main difference is
that you hit the sand first, not the ball. If you were to take a divot with a practice swing (which is not permitted during play) the ball would have been in the center of that divot.
Just like the flop shot, let the club do the work and keep the arms and center moving to a follow through. If you want to get the ball up faster, hinge your wrists in the back swing.
A good rule of thumb for soft sand and good lies is to open your stance and your club face. For bad lies, wet or hard sand, square your stance and close your club face. Remember: hit the sand first and follow through keeping your arms and center moving.
Keep in mind it is against the rules to ground the club in a hazard and test the depth of the sand. You are permitted to take a fair stance, so moving your feet to get a balanced position is permissible.

Karate Classes
The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health,
physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

Taper/Training Point to Ponder
Spring taper season has come and gone meaning most of the swimmers in this area have come full circle within what should be one of three to four tapers in one calendar year. Hopefully, all the athletes in this area met their goals for this micro season, however that is not always the case.
Moving forward into the next phase of the season it is important to remember these objectives:
• Meet with your coach to set individual goals that are attainable and realistic. The goals should not just be time drops; rather practice goals and technique improvements need to be articulated.
• Train hard
• Have fun
• Have confidence not only in yourself, but also your training and your team.
• Do not over analyze your races prior to competition. Yes, mental preparedness is critical, however when race time comes you have to have the autonomic response to “fire” at a relaxed rate. All the thought of swimming needs to happen at practice, so that one can react at competition.
• Drafting in a race, when the opportunity presents itself, can save the swimmer, up to 30% in energy expenditure.
• In the Short Course Yards season/swim, turns, walls, under water’s, and breakout are very important.
• Long Course Meters, all the above apply but now Distance Per Stroke (DPS) and efficient stoke technique are essential.
• Always, always remember that if you are not having fun while racing in practice or in competition, then

Fitness Tip Tips from the TrainerJoanna Van der Laan
10 Tips for Choosing Athletic Shoes
Proper-fitting shoes make all the difference whether you walk or run.Its knowing which shoes to buy that seems to require an advanced degree. Choose the wrong athletic shoes and you could end up lying on the couch nursing shin splints or aching heels instead of enjoying a brisk walk or run.
While most specialty sport-shoe stores have knowledgeable staff to guide you, you’ll be a few steps ahead of the game armed with some basic knowledge about your feet and their specific needs. Here is some expert advice to heed before buying new footwear:
1. Don’t make shoes multitask. Walking shoes are stiffer;
running shoes are more flexible, with
extra cushioning to handle greater impact. If you do both activities, get a pair for each one.
2. * Know your foot. Sure, we’ve all got 10 toes and two
heels, but beyond that, feet come in a variety of shapes -- and knowing your foot’s particular quirks is key to selecting the right pair of shoes. Most major brands now offer a model to suit every foot type.
3. Feet change, measure your foot frequently. “It’s a myth that
foot size doesn’t change in adults,” says Steven Raiken, MD. “It does change as we get older, so have your feet measured twice a year. Sizes also vary between brands, so go by what fits, not by what size the shoe is.” Raiken is director of the foot and ankle service at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
4. Shop toward the end of the day. Feet swell over the course
of the day; they also expand while you run or walk, so shoes should fit your feet when they’re at their largest.
5. Bring your own socks -- the ones you wear while running
or walking. If you wear orthotics, bring those, too. Shoes need to fit with the orthotic inside.
6. Don’t believe in breaking in. Running and walking shoes
should feel comfortable right away, Raiken tells WebMD. Walk or run around the store a bit to make sure they feel good in action.
7. Use the rule of thumb. There should be about 3/8-1/2 inch
between the front of your big toe and the end of the shoe -- about a thumb’s width. The heel should fit
Continued from page 8
TEnn S tip of the Month
relatively tightly; your heel should not slip out when you walk. The upper part of the shoe -- which goes over the top of your foot -- should be snug and secure, and not too tight anywhere. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons writes that when fitting in to an athletic shoe you should be able to freely wiggly all of your toes when the shoe is on.
8. Understand the bells and whistles. Some models of
running shoes look better suited to a space mission than a run in the park, but some of those groovy-looking features actually serve a purpose. Clear inserts, filled with gel, Freon, or air, provide extra shock absorption, as do those springy-looking things.
These features are especially good for people who tend to get heel pain, says Raiken, and not so good for people whose ankles twist easily, as shoes with extra cushioning tend to provide less traction. Some shoes allow you to pump up the tongue, which lets people with difficult-to-fit feet achieve a more customized fit.
9. Don’t over- or underpay. Good-quality running and
walking shoes are fairly pricey -- and usually worth it. “A $15-shoe will not be as good as an $80-shoe,” says Raiken. But you’ll pay a premium for super-fashionable styles or those associated with a celebrity -- and they won’t be any better for your feet.
10. Know when to replace them. The average pair of
running shoes should be replaced after about 350-400 miles of use, says Clifford Jeng, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. Better yet, go by how your shoes look and feel. Once the back of the sole is worn out or the shoe feels uncomfortable or less supportive, it’s time to take those tootsies shopping again.
Having a positive attitude isn’t something you simply tack onto your personality. Positivity isn’t external like a new suit or a new pair of shoes. It comes from deep within. It must, or it would be eliminated with the first sign of a counter negative force.
Grand slam champion Martina Navratilova calls herself an optimist and says a positive attitude is a choice. “You have to have a positive attitude to be a champion, and you have to be in the moment. That’s what life’s about,” says Martina. “Because if you’re not with that ball
right that split second, if you’re just a second late wondering, ‘Oh, did I hit that well?’ It’s too late. You have to be right in that moment. That translates into real life quite nicely.”
Positivity is built on having your own positive life philosophy, on knowing your strengths and on surrounding yourself with other sources of positivity.
Be positive and stay positive on the court and positive results will follow. Always remember that “Pressure is a privilege.”

Why should I have a facial?
Regardless of your age or gender, if you want your skin to look its best you have to take care of it. A facial does for your skin what a month of exercise and good nutrition does for your body – noticeably improve its look and feel. Through exfoliation, deep-cleaning of the pores, stimulating improved circulation, and use of professional-strength products, your esthetician can make a lot of progress towards improving your skin in a single session. Like the personal trainer, they have experience, techniques, products and equip ment that cannot be replicated at home. Likewise, regular facials (especially with an active home-care regimen) will help prevent breakouts, keep your
surface cells newer and healthier, and thereby ensure that your skin looks its very best. Your esthetician can recom-mend the optimal frequency for your particular skin - it will vary from person to person.
Why should I go toa spa to have my facials? Your facial will be as effective as the training of your esthetician, and the quality of products and equip ment at her disposal. Spas carefully hand-se lect only the top licensed estheticians who are both clinically skilled and possess a nurturing, client-fo cused approach to skin care. Every individual’s skin is unique, and therefore, each service is customized to the individual.
Regardless of the type of facial you select, your esthetician will select the products used following complete skin analysis. Further, all products used in spa facials contain the most effective ingredients available. If you’ve gone into a spa for a facial, then you’re deluding yourself to say you’re 100% happy with your home skin care routine. A good facial therapist will prescribe the right products for your skin.
Why is exfoliation important?
As we age, the process of cell regeneration slows down. This means that the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones. When old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. Furthermore, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores, leading to blemishes and acne. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are both
resurfacing procedures that exfoliate the skin. Tania Gorman is the owner and head esthetician at Essentials Massage & Facials, where a European facial and an hour relaxation massage are each only $25. Essentials Spa is located at 2230 Ashley Oaks Circle, Wesley Chapel. They are open Tuesday - Saturday 9 am to 9 pm, Sunday 11 am to 6 pm and Monday 10 am to 7 pm. Their phone number is 813-527-6979. v

A Briter Smile Dental Care, located at the corner of Bruce
B. Downs and County Line Rd, offers excellent family dental care in a friendly atmosphere, with dentists who know how important dental health is and who strive to meet your specific needs.
Dr. Eskandari attended Howard University College of Dentistry and earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1997. She completed a general residency program at Hill-sborough County Dental Research Clinic and has been in practice since 1999. Dr. Shayes originally attended Shiraz University School of Dental Medicine and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1995. He later attended Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale and earned his DMD
degree in 2000. The husband and wife team first met each other at a dental convention and started work-ing together in 2001. A Briter Smile Dental Care is their second and new-est location. Their other location is in Trinity where they have been serving the community since 2004.
Dr. Eskandari says that cosmetic dentistry, such as full crowns or Invisalign (clear braces), is one of her favorite parts of her job. “A total makeover, when you see patients smile who haven’t smiled in a while, is very rewarding. Many people cover their mouth with their hand or won’t open their mouth to smile because of the way their teeth look. Then after treatment they gain the confidence that they bring that into the work-place or even into their social life.”
A Briter Dental Care offers discounted in-house specials that are many times better than most conven-tional insurance plans, saving their patients money. Many times Dr. Eskandari and Dr. Shayes can save patients between 15 – 20 percent on their treatments. Dr. Shayes explains that many times insurance companies have limitations to their policies, and the dentists don’t want patients to go without having their dental health needs met.
The two dentists offer flexible hours, which includes Saturday appoint-ments and same day emergency visits.
A Briter Smile Dental Care wants to be your family dentist.
A Briter Smile Dental Care is located at 20729 Center Oak Drive Tampa, FL 33647, corner of Bruce B. Downs and county Line Rd. They accept most major insurances and can be reached at 813-907-1222. Please call or visit www.mynewtampadentist.com for more information. v

Precision Kia announces Books for Troops as the winner of a $1000 donation in their Feburary
“Pay it Forward” event on Facebook. The announcement was made on their Facebook page.
Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel wants to thank all their February charities and their supporters for an exciting month of voting. Congratulations to Books For Troops for getting the most votes and winning the February $1000 donation. They broke a record with 1099 votes followed closely by Sylvia Thomas Center with 874 votes. Patricia Murphy, Project Chairman of Books for Troops said, “I’m doing my happy dance! The other chairities we were competing against are amazing too. I’m just so grateful for all the support from our facebook fans.”
The Books for Troops project began October 1st with a goal of collecting 1000 books to ship to deployed troops. As of today the project has collected 6,356 paperback books for troops. “The New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club budgeted $1000 to cover the shipping costs for the project.
Together with an in-kind donation of postage from a local business we have packed and shipped 5,000 books. This donation from Wesley Chapel Kia will allow us to ship an additional 2,500 books to our troops overseas,” said Murphy.“To our facebook fans, this is their award too. We couldn’t have done it without their help,” said Murphy. “Many people have asked if I would do this year-round and I have decided to do it. This has been so much fun.”
If you would like to make a donation toward postage for books please visit the GFWC New Tampa Juniors website www.gfwcnewtampajuniors.org and click the donate button on the bottom of the page. You can also friend Books for Troops on facebook or visit the blog BooksforTroopsTampa.wordpress.com for more information about the project.

Janet Carr, the owner of ‘Accessories and More’ will provide the fashions for the
Tampa Palms Women’s Club Fashion Show at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club on April 19th. It will
be a special show as Accessories and More, started in August of 1992, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary.
“When I first started my business I only carried accessories, and then about 16 years ago I added the clothing. It’s a good thing I added the ‘…and More’ to my business name,” says Carr.
“I travel around the state doing fashion shows, trade shows, conventions, etc. selling my fashions and accessories. I carry merchandise that is typically found in a boutique, but since I do not have a storefront, my prices tend to be less expensive. I refer to my business as a ‘boutique on wheels.’ Instead of customers coming to me, I bring the store to the customer. I definitely carry enough to fill a store! My merchandise is geared toward the missy customer who wants to look fabulous at a reasonable price. She also likes to travel and wants fashions that are versatile, that travel well, and that are easy to care for. Most of my merchandise can be
worn all year round here in Florida. “
“I do most of the same shows/groups year after year, so I know most of my customer base. That helps me when I’m deciding what to buy season after season. These customers have also become my friends. We have established a great relationship over the years. I am fortunate to have such wonderful, loyal customers who I can also call my friends.”
Thus, the Tampa Palms Women’s Club invites all to come and see what “Accessories and More” is all about on April 19th, starting at 10.30 am with social time. The tickets, which cost $ 24, include lunch and door prizes. Raffle tickets are for sale, as well as the fashions being modeled. Proceeds will benefit OASIS, which provides basic necessities to needy students in Hillsborough County public schools. Reserve your ticket by contacting [email protected] or call Judy at 813-903-9034 by April 14th. v

The White Elephant sale held at the March 1st Tampa Palms Womens Club was a big success! Our ladies brought in 1 or 2 items for the sale, which were then auctioned off to the highest bidder by Barbara Shimer. Barbara provided lively and fast paced auctioneering with a good dollop of
humor. There were several hotly contested items, with the biggest proceeds coming from a pair of large Chinese ceramic pots. Many went home with new items, and we look forward to doing this again next year! All proceeds will be used for charitable donations. v

Jennifer Palanda and Tyler Alverez both live in Tampa Palms, but they didn’t know each other until
they started volunteering with Cat Crusaders, Inc., an all-volunteer cat rescue in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area. It was their desire to help, a need for community service hours, and their love of cats that brought them together.
When it comes to the rescue, there is always plenty for volunteers to do. Students earn community service hours by volunteering at Petsmart New Tampa by BJ’s, where Cat Crusaders shows cats 7 days a week. Students are trained to kennel, which includes cleaning food and water bowls, scooping litter boxes, and of course, giving the kitties plenty of love. While kennelers are used during
the week, it is the weekends that are always in short supply of adult and student volunteers.
Volunteers sign up for the hours they want to volunteer, so they set their own schedule and can volunteer for as much or as little as they desire.
A majority of the cats and kittens find their forever homes on the weekends, so Cat Crusaders works in shifts on the weekends, which include Sat from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adult volunteers learn how to screen individuals for adoption and oversee the high school student volunteers. There are always several volunteers at each shift, so no one is alone. Jennifer and Tyler are often in the store, helping with adoptions on the weekends.

Cat Crusaders is also always in need of foster homes for the furballs until they are adopted. Cat Crusaders supplies all the food, litter, and vet care while foster homes supply the love, and a clean, safe, indoor environment. Entire families can participate in fostering, and students earn community service hours for fostering, as long as their parents confirm that they helped care for their foster kitties.
Kitten season has just started and Cat Crusaders as usual, is being hit from all sides. They try and help people in
the community, while also trying to save lives by taking kitties out of the two local kill shelters. Cat Crusaders is always looking for volunteers. There are many things to do from kenneling the adoption center, to helping with adoptions, to fostering a cat. There are even fundraising opportunities for those with allergies who want to help.
For more information, visit them at PetSmart New Tampa on the weekends, or www.tampacatcrusaders.org, or call (813)472-9700. v

CAnCErPrEvEnTIOn STuDYIf you’ve ever known someone with cancer, you know that birthdays are a very significant milestone. There are nearly 12 million people in America who have survived cancer - and countless more who have avoided it - who will be celebrating birthdays this year. You can join the movement for more birthdays and fight back against cancer by enrolling in a new research study called the Cancer Prevention Study - 3 (CPS-3).
The American Cancer Society’s Epidemiology Research Program is inviting men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 years who have no personal history of cancer to join this historic research study. The ultimate goal is to enroll at least 300,000 adults from various racial/
ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S. By joining CPS-3, you can help us understand how to prevent cancer, which will save lives and give people more of their most precious resource: time. More time with their families and friends, more memories, more celebrations . . . and more birthdays.
Enrollment opportunities will continue until December 2013. Please contact us at [email protected] for additional information. Please tell everyone you know about this one-time historic opportunity to make a difference in the fight against cancer. v
