From the Principal’s Desk:
Dear McKinley Family and Friends, I hope everyone had a wonderful break and were able to enjoy time with your families. Thank you for all you do each day to make McKinley great. The new year is always a great time to reflect and to work on creating good habits. One of the best habits you can build in your child is good attendance. Attendance is important not just because students should be here for academic lessons, but it also builds responsibility and commitment. School is a child’s job and we want him or her to build a strong work ethic in school, as we hope to see one day in his or her career. Attendance is also important for parents and families. This year make a resolution to attend more school events, volunteer for PTA and stay connected through our flyers, phone calls, app and website. Staying informed and involved will help your child succeed in school.
Happy New Year, Mrs. Costella

Registration for 2020-2021
Registration for next school year for incoming kindergarteners and new stu-dents will begin on January 27th. We will
hold an informational meeting on February 7th at 10:00 am in our auditorium.
PBIS Update At McKinley we developed school-wide expectations for every location in the school from the playground, lunch shelter, hallway/stairs, auditorium, bathroom, cafeteria line, pro-grams/clubs, and dismissal gate. The purpose of PBIS School-wide expectations is to estab-lish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm as well as to change the focus of negative behaviors to positive expectations and interactions. These expectations were put on posters, placed around the school, and introduced to the students at the beginning of this school year. Since we are the “Panthers” we used the word PAWS to represent the overview of our behavioral expectations. The “A” in PAWS stands for “Accepting Responsibility.” Students Accept Responsibility by being Responsible in all locations of the school. This looks like: • Go straight to your destination when transitioning • Stay with your class when walking in the hallway/stairs • Quickly line up when your class whistle is blown • Keep your place in line and use quiet voices • Follow game rules • Follow directions of all adults when entering and leaving all locations • Use quiet voice when transitioning • Eat before you play • Put away equipment • Pick up trash
Safety Update
Show respect for our neighbors. DO NOT block driveways or double park when dropping off or picking up your children. Students running across the street or
cars trying to maneuver around double parked cars creates added safety hazards for our students.
Make student safety a priority!
Student Council Information
During December's meeting, Student Council members discussed what is going well with Friday recycling as well as the teachers who will be monitoring this month. We
also discussed our charity, The Families of the Verdugo. We planned a second flyer to send home to families by the end of the week. Student Council also made signs and
hung them up around the school for our next spirit day on Friday, December 20, Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day! Lastly, we created a "kindness" new years challenge for
students to complete when they come back from winter break.
From the Interventionist’s Desk
Greetings McKinley Families: Happy New Year! This month I will introduce Emotion Management. During the next several weeks students will be learning to describe what triggers their own strong emotions and what happens in their brains and bodies when they experience strong emotions. Students who can recognize strong emotions and calm down cope better and are less prone to aggressive behaviors. The Second Step program teaches students proactive strategies that help prevent strong emotions from escalating into negative behaviors. Being able to manage these emotions allow students the ability to interrupt escalating emotions by de-termining a personal signal to identify and name strong feelings as they occur. Staying in control of your emotions and actions can help students get along better with others and be successful at school. Teaching students to recognize strong emotions and use strategies to calm down can be effective in in-creasing their ability to cope and decreasing the likelihood of aggressive or other problem behaviors. Kind Regards,
Sylvia Acevedo
