PANZER VI 'TIGER' & 'KINGTIGER'
There can be few people who have never heard of the Tiger tank
- indeed, it has come to be seen as one of the most potent symbols
of German military power in the Second World War. First com¬ mitted to combat on the Eastern front in the late summer of
1942, the Tiger I and its more formidable successor - the Tiger II,
'Kingtiger' - had, by the time of the defeat of Nazi Germany, gen¬ erated an awesome reputation that far belied the very small pro¬
duction run of less than 2000 built. Entering service as the mil¬
itary initiative passed from German hands, the Tiger's formida¬ ble combination of heavy frontal armour and lethal long range
88mm gun proved ideal for the defensive warfare imposed upon
the Wehrmacht as it was forced back upon the borders of the
Fatherland by the allied armies. Whether operating on the rolling
plains of the Russian steppes or amidst the dense boscage of
Normandy and the forests of the Ardennes, the Tiger took an
immense toll of allied armour, becoming an object of fear and
respect among Soviet, British and American tankmen alike. The
Tiger was also the mount of many of Germany's tank aces whose
war careers were so carefully publicised by Goebbel's propagan¬
da ministry. In this first programme of the 'Die Deutschen
Panzer' series, the history of this legendary tank is told with par¬ ticular emphasis placed on combat footage of the Tiger in action.
Also seen is footage of the Ferdinand/Elefant on the Eastern
front and the Sturmtiger in action in the Warsaw Uprising of
1944. This unique compilation is a fitting tribute to what is
probably the most famous tank ever built.
