Major themes of “Doctor Faustus”.

The Play “Doctor Faustus” written by Christopher Marlow. Doctor Faustus ,a talented German scholar at Wittenberg. He rails against the limits of knowledge. “Doctor Faustus” is a play of deep questions concerning morality, religion, and man’s relationship to both. “Doctor Faustus” is based on a story of man who sells his soul to the devil for power and knowledge.

The meaning of Sin is- to do something that is considered wrong according to religion or moral law.

The meaning of Redemption- the act of saving people from sin and evil.

The meaning of Damanation-the state of being in hell as punishment after death.

Examine the theme of Sin, Redemption,Damnation in ‘’Docter Faustus”

Faustus’ first great sin is pride. He does not stop there. Reflecting the Christian view, pride gives rise to all of the other sins, and ends ironically with the proud man’s abasement. Faustus goes quickly from pride to all of other sins, becoming increasingly petty and low.

There is the idea ,which Christianity defines an acts contrary to the will of God. In making pact with Lucifer, Faustus commits what is in a sense the ultimate sin: not only does he disobey god, but he consciously and even eagerly renounces obedience to him, choosing instead to swear allegiance to the devil.

Theme of sin

In a christen framework, however even the worst deed can be forgiven through the redemptive power of Jesus Christ, God's son, who, according to christen belief, died on the cross for humankind’s sins. Thus however terrible Faustus’s pact with Lucifer may be, the possibility of redemption is always open to him. Faustus decides to remain loyal to Hell rather than seek heaven. Faustus makes the choice to sell his soul to the devil and he suffers the consequences.

Theme of redemption

In the christen framework, this turning away from God condemns him to spend an eternity in hell. Only at the end of his life does Faustus desire to repent to repent and , in the final scene, he cries out Christ to redeem him. But it is too late for him to repent.

Theme of Damnation

“Man, by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying Salvation”.

“The damnation of Faustus is first willed by God, then by Satan, and finally by himself”.
