Meprofarm is an Indonesian company specialized in formulating pharmaceutical products in the city of Bandung. PT Meprofarm produces solid and gas waste as well as wastewater. This internship report is intended to evaluate waste management especially treatment process in Waste Water Treatment Plant. Wastewater in the WWTP consists of high COD and BOD value as well as other organic substances from production process. Based on its characteristics, wastewater is treated physically, chemically, and biologically using main units such as clarifier, activated sludge, and plate settler for sedimentation, and filtration. The treatment process could maintain the pH , temperature, and decrease both BOD and COD value of the wastewater. Key words: Pharmaceutical formulation, Wastewater, Activated sludge, Plate settler Abstrak : PT. Meprofarm adalah perusahaan yang bergerak dalam formulasi produk farmasi di kota Bandung. PT. Meprofarm menghasilkan buangan atau limbah berupa padat,cair, gas. Pembuatan laporan ini dimaksudkan untuk mengevaluasi pengelolaan limbah khususnya proses pengolahan pada instalasi pengolahan air limbah industri. Karakteristik limbah cair hasil produksi yang akan diolah mengandung COD atau senyawa organik yang berupa hasil sisa proses produksi. Berdasarkan karakteristik tersebut, pengolahan air limbah dilakukan secara fisika, kimia, dan biologi dengan menggunakan unit utama clarifier, lumpur aktif, dan sedimentasi dengan plate settler serta penyaringan. Pengolahan ini mampu menjaga pH dan temperatur serta menurunkan nilai BOD dan COD. Kata kunci : Formulasi Farmasi, Limbah cair, lumpur aktif, plate settler I. INTRODUCTION PT Meprofarm is a formulating pharmaceutical industry located in Jl. Soekarno Hatta no 789 Bandung. Production process will generate solid, liquid, and gas waste. Wastewater generated is treated in the wastewater treatment plant inside the factory area. Untreated wastewater may damage the river quality where it is dumped, therefore the wastewater should be treated well. II . EXISTING CONDITION WWTP in PT Meprofarm treats 500 liter/hour of wastewater originated from washing process and in between substances that is not categorized as hazardous waste. Units utilized are mentioned in the paragraphs below

Abstract : PT. Meprofarm is an Indonesian company specialized in formulating

waste as well as wastewater. This internship report is intended to evaluate waste

Abstrak : PT. Meprofarm adalah perusahaan yang bergerak dalam formulasi produk

farmasi di kota Bandung. PT. Meprofarm menghasilkan buangan atau limbah berupa

padat,cair, gas. Pembuatan laporan ini dimaksudkan untuk mengevaluasi pengelolaan

limbah khususnya proses pengolahan pada instalasi pengolahan air limbah industri.

Karakteristik limbah cair hasil produksi yang akan diolah mengandung COD atau

senyawa organik yang berupa hasil sisa proses produksi. Berdasarkan karakteristik

tersebut, pengolahan air limbah dilakukan secara fisika, kimia, dan biologi dengan

menggunakan unit utama clarifier, lumpur aktif, dan sedimentasi dengan plate settler

serta penyaringan. Pengolahan ini mampu menjaga pH dan temperatur serta menurunkan

nilai BOD dan COD.

I. INTRODUCTION

PT Meprofarm is a formulating pharmaceutical industry located in Jl. Soekarno Hatta no

789 Bandung. Production process will generate solid, liquid, and gas waste. Wastewater

generated is treated in the wastewater treatment plant inside the factory area. Untreated

wastewater may damage the river quality where it is dumped, therefore the wastewater

should be treated well.

II . EXISTING CONDITION

WWTP in PT Meprofarm treats 500 liter/hour of wastewater originated from washing

process and in between substances that is not categorized as hazardous waste.

- Antibiotic, 1st, 2nd Equalization Basin

Equalization basin functions to equalize flow using diffuser. Antibiotic and 1st

equalization basin use perforated pipe as diffuser while the 2nd equalization basin

uses disc diffuser. Antibiotic basin receives waste from beta-lactam and

cephalosporin production plant, inactivating antibiotic using NaOH solution. The 1st

equalization basin receives waste from non antibiotic plant and RO water plant. The

2nd equalization basin receives waste from 1st basin and Mepro 2 plant.

- 1st and 2nd Clarifier

Coagulant and flocculant , PAC and polyelectrolyte,are added inside the 1st clarifier.

The 2nd clarifier receives the effluent from 1st clarifier thus preventing shock

loading.

- Neutralization Tank

Neutralization tank is utilized to receive effluent from coagulation and flocculation

process and serves as a control basin should the previous process fails. At the bottom

of the tank there is a tap above the 1st equalization basin to recirculate the wastewater

if too much sediment was formed.

- 1st and 2nd Aeration Pond

Aeration basin treats waste biologically using activated sludge system. Both basins

have the same functions, while the aerating process is conducted 24 hours 7 days in a

week.

- Sedimentation

Sedimentation tank collects activated sludge using 11 plate settlers. Collected sludge

will be sent to drying bed or recirculated to the aeration basin.

- Activated Carbon Filter

Filter functions as an adsorbent of untreated materials such as colouring substances if

there are rejected products in the wastewater treatment plant.

- Biofilter

Biofilter consists of stone and sponge to filter opaque wastewater . The tank is

cleaned twice a week

- 1st and 2nd Control Basin

Control basin consists of two basins using diffuser. On the 2nd basin 3 catfishes as

bio-indicator are placed. The final effluent will proceed to the Cipanjalu River.

III. EVALUATION

According to the regulation SK.Gubernur Jabar no 6/1999 , treated wastewater at PT

Meprofarm has already fulfilled the effluent standard permitted

- pH : WWTP treats wastewater so it fulfilled the standard value 6-9.

- BOD : WWTP treats wastewater so it fulfilled the standard value 75 mg/l.

- TSS : WWTP treats wastewater so it fulfilled the standard value 75 mg/l but the

effluent is still opaque.

- COD: WWTP treats wastewater so it fulfilled the standard value 150 mg/l.

IV. SUGGESTIONS

- Tighter WWTP monitoring.

- Bio indicator replacement using goldfish.

- Using contact stabilization system for the aeration process.

- Discharge the sludge more frequently.
