An Open Letter to You from Dr. Peter Barrington

11:42am Eastern Time
Dear Trader,
Right now as I write this, I’m overlooking the sea
in my waterfront home in Florida, a cup of hot tea
steaming next to my fingers. I love the Atlantic ocean.
Each time I gaze over the ocean, it reminds me of how
vast it is. It also reminds me of how endless opportunity
is, for both you and me. For all of us. Especially for
those of us who DECIDE to take advantage of the
opportunities that this wonderful world has to offer.
This waterfront home in Florida is just one of the many multi-million-dollar mansions I own.
I have homes in Boston (where I’m originally from), Houston (where my wife is from), and Beverly
Hills (where I lived most of my adult life) in addition to the one I find myself staying at the most
(where I have semi-retired to): the home where I’m writing you this letter from in Florida. I’m not
telling you this to brag but I’m wanting to relay the power of trading to you. It made me wealthy in
ways I would have never thought possible and certainly in ways that would never otherwise have
been afforded to me. And it can do the same for you but only IF you take the time to closely study
the markets, apply what you learn, PRACTICE what you’ve come to know, and to get REALLY
GOOD at trading before you commit one real dollar into the market.
The way to practice is by using this paper trading log. This log is a little old-fashioned. It’s
the one I used many decades ago when I’d introduce in new markets into my trading repertoire and
wanted to practice with them to get an idea about their market “personality” before committing real
money to trade those markets. This is what you will use this log for also: to understand how to trade
the markets and any time you introduce a new market to trade that you’re not familiar with.
How long should you paper trade for? As long as it takes to feel comfortable about your
technical analysis skills and your ability to forecast the market using those tools. This may take you
2 weeks. It may take you 2 years (although unlikely). The idea, though, is to give yourself adequate
and ample time to understand how these markets work BEFORE sinking one penny into the
markets. This will be your saving grace. If you don’t use it, you’ll probably end up losing money in
the markets. If you don’t use it long enough, you expose yourself to the risk of not being prepared
enough and that increases your risk in losing money in the markets.
Don’t be impatient with the process. Use your paper trading log daily. And you’ll just know
when you’re ready to start using your market forecasting tools in the real world of trading.
