Over the past few months, Israelbegan easing restrictions on the flowof goods into Gaza. This was metwith approval by UN Secretary BanKi-Moon during his visit to theregion. Israels policy towards the

Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip is notstagnant and is always changing inresponse to regional security. Overthis past weekend, the Israeli Cabinetvoted to approve a number of measures which will create a muchsimpler policy towards the closure ofGaza.The goal of the closure has always

been to eliminate the f low of c om ba ta n t s a nd de ny Ha m a sweaponry which it has, and willcontinue to use against Israelis andPalestinians. However, the updatedpolicy will make the distinctionbetween what is and what is not

allowed into Gaza clearer. All goods,food products, medicine etc. willcontinue to enter Gaza with norestrictions. But rather than publish alist of what is allowed, the Israeligovernment has decided it will besimpler to have only a list of what isnot allowed. This way, there is noconfusion and the world can see thatIsrael has no intentions to denyGazans needed goods . Again ,

everything tha t i s not on thepublished list of banned materials(grenades and rifles etc.) will passthrough any and all Israeli-operatedcrossings.The policy of liberalizing the entry

of civilian goods into Gaza is meantto enable the civilian population toengage in routine economic andcivilian activity, while simultaneouslypreventing the entry of weapons and

materiel that could help the Hamasterror regime to strike at Israelicitizens. Any civilian product that isnot on the list of prohibited items willbe allowed in.As for dual use items, or goods

that can be used either for civilianprojects or terrorism, Israel will allowthem entry to Gaza. With the help ofinternational bodies, Israel is creatinga system in which dual use goodssuch as raw metals and chemicals willbe delivered with assurances fromthird parties that its destination is notHamas but the people of Gaza. Toensure the safety and prosperity of the

Palestinian people living in Gaza,efforts must be made to ensure thatHamas does not hijack incoming aid,which has been happening on a dailybasis.Said Robert Serry, special envoy of

the United Nations Secretary-General, This targeting [by Hamas]of NGOs, including UN partnerorganizations, is unacceptable,violating accepted norms of a free

society and harming the Palestinianpeople. The de facto authorities mustcease such repressive steps and allowthe re-opening of these civil societyinstitutions without delay.The policy of closure on the Gaza

Strip is anchored in internationalrules of law and treaties (includingthe Geneva Convention and the SanRemo Manual on International LawApplicable to Armed Conflicts at

Sea). The policy was also authorizedby the Israel Supreme Court, anindependent body not tied to politicsof the ruling government.Restrictions on the entry of goods

into the Gaza Strip is now at a bareminimum, in which items banned arecomparable to what one is notallowed to bring to the United Statesfrom Canada. Make no mistake,Israels sanctions against Hamasauthorities will continue to deny themweapons to use against innocentcivilians, both Israeli and Palestinian.The people of Gaza are not ourenemy, and we hope that this updated

policy will strength Palestinians whileweakening Hamas, which refuses torecognize Israels right to exist. In a single year Obama lost thesupport of independent voters andliberal Republicans by passing thelefts agenda. And this year, he iswell on the way to losing the supportof the left for not passing enough oftheir agenda. Being too left wing formainstream America, and toomainstream for the left is not a newproblem for the Democratic party. Itsa problem theyve faced since whathad been the counterculture becamethe party establishment. But its aspecial problem for the man who roseto power as the poster child of theleft. Barack Hussein Obama.2008 was the lefts big moment. Its

chance to seize control of theDemocratic party and through it all ofA m e r i c a . T h e p r o g r e s s i v eradicalization of liberalism hadallowed the left to mainstream itsideas within the party.The 8 years ofthe Bush Administration had alsoallowed the left to be in the vanguardof the opposition, which through theirgrass roots organizations, funded bythe likes of Soros, they made sure totranslate into also being in thevanguard of the party as a whole.Taking down Hillary, who had beenpositioning herself as a conservativeDemocrat, was Job 1. Picking thehorse to ride to the White House wasJob 2.The main two contenders were John

Edwards and Barack Obama. InitiallyEdwards looked like the bettercandidate to sell America on the leftsagenda by wrapping it up in thesugary rhetoric of compassion withsome obligatory JFK New Frontierhomages. But to many Edwardsseemed like yet another version ofBill Clinton, a Southern Democratwho spoke the progressive language,but had enough realpolitik to draw theline at his own political welfare. Andas it turned out, Edwards shared yetanother of Clintons proclivitiesw h i c h ma d e h i m p o l i t i c a l l yunsuitable. Obama was a bigger risk,but he came with deep backingfrom luminaries like Ayers. The onlyobstacle for the party was to makehim seem mainstream enough to beelectable. Which they did bywrapping him in the flag at everyopportunity and keeping his rhetoricfocused away from specifics andtoward high minded generalities.The left thought it had its candidate.

So did the party. Both spent a greatdeal of money to put him in the WhiteHouse, but neither of them reallyspent very much time thinking aboutwho Barack Hussein Obama reallywas. Obamas native instincts as theeternal outsider allowed him to wearnumerous disguises. And so he hadno really trouble finessing a new setof dual identities, as both a radical

and a moderate at the same time. Butthe problem with maintainingcontradictory identities is that sooneror later you have to commit. The

agenda of the left and that of the partywere not completely incompatible.Both for example wanted socializedmedicine and cap and trade. But themain priority for the Democraticparty leadership was getting to powerand staying there. For the lefthowever, the agenda always comesfirst. And both naturally assumed thatObama shared their priorities.Careerism for the party. And ideologyfor the left.What neither of them considered was

that Obama was even more of a fraudthan Edwards or Clinton. BecauseObama was not just hiding mere run

of the mill political hypocrisy orpersonal infidelity, he was living a liein a much more profound way.Politicians commonly pretend to careabout things to appeal to voters. ButObama had been pretending to careabout things all his life. He had spentthe better part of his life playing thechameleon, and this made him anatural politician, but underneath allthat was a coldness and detachmentthat exceeded that of any normalpolitician. Obama had learnedquickly that identity is more definedby the things you care about, than thecountry you come from or the color

of your skin. There was only oneproblem, he didnt care about any ofthose things. He cared only abouthimself.The administration that Obama put

together was a compromise. Clintonpeople out front and the radicals justbehind them. The Clinton peoplewere there to reassure the party, butoften they had titles, but not realpower or access. The radicals werethere to reassure the left thateverything was going according toplan. Obama came into office with ahalo and golden wings, surrounded bypropaganda more worthy of North

Korea, than the United States ofAmerica. The left assumed that thiswould give him unlimited power.Saner Democrats knew better andassumed that the White House didtoo. What followed was the usualPigs at the Trough scene as thevictors dug in and began feeding off

the crisis. Stimulus and bailout,takeover and take home checks.For Obama it was an endless party,

an extension of his campaign but with

more stature and a bigger budget.Plane trips anywhere he wanted.Vacation homes. Glamorous partiesand dinners. The D.C. party circuitthat had been moribund during 8years of Bush was back with avengeance. For his associates, it wasa chance to cash in. For the left, itwas about pushing their agenda, theirway. Everyone was acting as if theyhad won the Superbowl, when whatthey had really won was a chance tobe responsible for a major economiccrisis. And internally no one washappy. Obama had protected himselfby playing divide and conquer,

setting up conflicts within hisadministration, while he stood backand let them fight it out. Thisaggravated the existing fault lineswithin the Democratic camp andcreated the appearance of an absenteelandlord.Democratic party insiders began to

see Obama as oddly distant and an e o p h y t e l a c k i n g i n b a s i cmanagement sk i l l s . The l e f tm e a n w h i l e w a s b e c o m i n gincreasingly irritated because theywerent getting their way oftenenough. The left wanted radicalchange, while party politicians

wanted to stay in power. Obama hadto choose between two s ides .Mainstream party donors who wantedstability and radical donors and theirgrass roots networks who wantedradical change. A talented politicianmight have been able to keep bothsides working together. Obama wasnot the man for the job. And while hewas trying to keep both sides happy,he was thoroughly al ienat ingmainstream Americans .Obamacare was when it all went

south, as a panicked Democraticcongress was herded into supportinga wildly unpopular plan. A plan that

an embittered left thought didnt gofar enough, but turned independentvoters into Tea Party supporters. Itwas the ugliest and biggest pork piein a series of them, which nobody butJoe Biden seemed happy about.Alienating the left was a dangerous

thing to do, because they were the

ones who had provided Obama with aradical halo. This was what drove thepress to treat him as the love child ofGandhi and Martin Luther King, toshamelessly drool all over him, anddenounce any and all opponents of

him as ruthlessly as a Pravdaeditorial. Ideology is the messianismof the left. And as the left growsdissat isf ied with Obama hisideological halo dims, and the mediabegins to stir and ask uncomfortablequestions.The Democrats have lost faith in

Obamas political invulnerability.Candidates are actively ducking hisendorsements even in primary races.The left meanwhile is losing faith inObamas revolutionary conscience,his willingness to do whatever it takesto push their agenda through.Communist regimes usually purged

their own ranks after a revolution toget rid of the fire breathers, whobecome an inconvenience once thepractical issues of governance have tobe decided. Previous Democraticadministrations did not have gulagsor firing squads at their disposal,they simply sidelined the left and letthem protest impotently. Obama hasnot taken that road yet, mainlybecause he comes from the left, andbecause such a purge wouldthoroughly alienate his non-minoritybase. But he may not have a choice.In 2008, Obama ran against the War

in Iraq, against economic malaise andan out of touch administration. Its2010 and as far as his base isconcerned, nothing has real lychanged. Which means theyre lesslikely to bother voting and morelikely to invest their energies intoback ing even more marg ina lcandidates on the left. Another yearof this and the only people who willstil l be invested in an ObamaAdministration are the people makingmoney off his bailouts, programs andlaws. And that can only repulse thepublic even more.Obama alienated the center by

pandering to his base and alienatedhis base by not giving themeverything they wanted right away.The Democratic party has stoppedcelebrating him and come to therealization that for the next few yearstheyre stuck with him. The left isteetering on the edge of throwing himover for another socialist knight inrotten armor. And as his basecollapses, he has few options left. revisionism, but a demand fortextbooks to accept a matter ofIslamic faith as fact.The now banned book, meant to be

taught in class 8, also carried anillustration of Prophet Mohammedlooking like a woman.Islam forbids idolatrous depictions

and there is no authentic historicalrecord to establish what Prophet

Muhammad looked like.Two other books have also comeunder fire for similar transgressions.These are Nepal Social Studies

published by Athrai Publications and

Asias Social Studies by AsiaPublications.Nizamuddin said that Nepal Social

The U.S. is going to lend billions ofdollars to Brazils state-owned oilcompany, Petrobras, to financeexploration of the huge offshorediscovery in Brazils Tupi oil field inthe Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro.Brazils planning minister confirmedthat White House National SecurityAdviser James Jones met this monthwith Brazilian officials to talk aboutthe loan.The U.S. Export-Import Bank tells us

i t has i s sued a pre l iminarycommitment letter to Petrobras inthe amount of $2 billion and hasdiscussed with Brazil the possibility

of increasing that amount. Ex-ImBank says it has not decided whetherthe money will come in the form of adirect loan or loan guarantees. Eitherway, this corporate foreign aid maystrike some readers as odd, given thatthe U.S. Treasury seems desperate forcash and Petrobras is one of thelargest corporations in the Americas.But look on the bright side. If

President Obama has embracedoffshore drilling in Brazil, why not in

the old U.S.A.? The land of the sortafree and the home of the heavilyindebted has enormous offshore oildeposits, and last year ahead of theNovember elections, with gasoline at$4 a gallon, Congress let a ban onoffshore drilling expire.The Bush Administrations five-year

plan (2007-2012) to open the outer

continental shelf to oil explorationincluded new lease sales in the Gulfo f M e x i c o . B u t i n 2 0 0 7environmentalists went to court toblock drilling in Alaska and in April afederal court ruled in their favor. InMay, Interior Secretary Ken Salazarsaid his department was unsurewhether that ruling applied only toAlaska or all offshore drilling. So ita s k ed an ap p ea l s co u r t f o rclarification. Late last month thecourt said the earlier decision appliedonly to Alaska, opening the way forthe sale of leases in the Gulf. Mr.Salazar now says the sales will go

forward on August 19.This is progress, however slow. But
