Mavi Marmara: Video as Ammunition in theBattle for Worlds Hearts and Mindsby Richard Silverstein (Hija delZion para Israel - Daughter ofZion for Israel)

This is a follow-up on last nightspost and video which appears to show(at least according to those who

edited and captioned the video) themurder of a ship passenger by an IDFcommando. Thanks to new videofoo tage Pau l Woodward h asdiscovered, Im going to backtracksomewhat on the claims I made lastnight. Above youll see an expandedversion of the same video. Inaddition, Ill relay new information Is o l i c i t e d f r o m P r o f . Sc o t tM a c E a c h e r n , a B o w d o i nanthropologist and weapons expert,who attempted to piece together whatweapon was used and what thecommando was actually doing with it.Before I start and in order to quiet

the cheers of the hasbara crowd,nothing Im about to say conclusivelyrefutes the possibility that theconclusions I drew yesterday arewrong. But there other possibilitiesthat should be considered as well.First, Paul notes that the longer video

featured here, which appears to beone generation closer to the rawfootage than the video featuredyes te rday , shows the ac t iondifferently than the earlier video. Inother words, the video claiming toshow the murder of Furkan Dogan,shows commandos kicking a victimand then apparently shooting him.

The video above shows these actionsin reverse order. The IDF Seals firstpoint a weapon down at the victimand possibly fire it, and later kickhim.What does all this mean? It means

that the video footage mayve beenedited or manipulated to make itappear to show something it doesnt.But again, since all of this representsthe battle of dueling videos betweenIsrael and supporters of the flotillaactivists, its very hard to say anythingdefinitively other than that both

videos show commandos beating,menacing and possibly shootingvictims.

Israels supporters attempt tominimize the damage represented bythe videos contents by claiming theweapon held by the commando is apaintball gun and not one meant to

kill. Many people who want you tobelieve they know what theyretalking about have vociferously statedthis. But Id like to quote Prof.MacEachern who offers some foodfor thought:The weapon usedhas the following

characteristics:(a) the stock is quite thin, indicatingsomething with low recoil;(b) theres no large magazine visible(including a top-mounted paintballmagazine, which is pretty easy toidentify);(c) the operator seems to be workinga slide on the bottom of the weapon,

and ejects at least one cartridge(indicating its not CO2 powered likea paintball gun);(d) he works it four times at least,maybe five, while the weapon ispointing at the area they were kickingat before;(e) the barrel is long and thin (couldbe the barrel i tself or a soundsuppressor); and(f) he has a flashlight mounted on theleft side of the receiver.There appears to be no muzzle-flash,

indicating (a) thats its not aconventional pistol/rifle cartridge or(b) less likely, that a suppressor has

eliminated all of the flash from apistol cartridge.So, there are two possibilities:(1) these commandos are abusingsome lying on the ground by firingsome sort of crowd-control weapon, akind of paintball gun on steroids (e.g.An FN303, although I dont thinkthats what this is), at him at a rangeof a foot or so, or(2) this is an assassination weapon, anupdated De Lisle carbine or someequivalent silenced, single-shot pistol-calibre weapon, and they have killed

him.My money is somewhat on the

former, but no firm conclusions atthis point.Ruger rifle of the type possibly use

by IDF on board Mavi MarmaraIn a later message to me, Scott added

the following in an attempt to identifythe weapon brandished:I think hes shooting whoever is on

the ground with a silenced Ruger 10/22 .22-calibre bolt-action rifle with amodified stock. The Israelis boughtsome and used them for crowdcontrol for a while, until they were

prohibited legally from using it except they still did. They also use itto kill guard dogs a so-called hush-puppy weapon in the SpecialForces, so Sayeret 13 might be usingit. This would kill you.He offers evidence via BTselem of

the guns use by the IDF in theOccupied Territories in riot controlsituations in which it is fired intodemonstrators limbs, producingserious but usually not lethal injuries:Haaretz reported the comments of

an IDF official, who said that theRuger causes less harm, and is lesslethal, than rubber bullets.

Several children, however, werekilled by it.Given the duelling videos offered by

both sides, and the tendency of bothsides to be willing to manipulatedocumentary evidence to theiradvantage, its hard to say preciselywhat went on aboard the ship thatnight. Which is all the more reason itis absolutely necessary for their to bea credible international probe of thistragedy. Such an inquiry must hearfrom every member of the Israel team

that assaulted the Marmara as well asevery passenger who mayve engagedin resistance/violence and everypassenger who mayve witnessedsuch actions. This is the only way toascertain with any reliability whathappened and who is at fault, or mostat fault.

Inaction renders Europe complicit inillegal acts in the Middle East. It canno longer play third fiddleTodays miserable standoff in the

Middle East requires new initiatives.The short-term failure of Israelipolicies has concentrated globalattention on their blockade of Gazarather than on Irans pursuit ofnuclear weapons. The long-termfailure has rendered increasinglydifficult a two-state solution asPalestine is broken up into barrieredBantustans.

As President Obamas militarycommanders have told him, theabsence of anything resembling apeace process in the Middle East, andthe identification of Washington witha very rightwing Israeli government,has made it more difficult for the USto deal with Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan,Pakistan and others.If politics does not succeed, then

humanitarian aid will continue to benecessary. Yet we should neverde pe nd on the p r ov i s ion o f humanitarian relief as an excuse fordiplomatic drift and the failure toconfront intransigence. Organisationssuch as Medical Aid for Palestiniansdo not exist so that others can duckt h e i r m o r a l a n d p o l i t i c a lr e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s .The EU has a role to play to break

this logjam. It is Israels biggest tradepartner and the largest provider ofdevelopment assistance to Palestine,yet it has been content to play a quietthird fiddle to the US. There havebeen exceptions. In 1980, the EUheads of government and foreignm in i s t e r s a g r e e d the Ve n ic edec la ra t ion, which noted tha t t radi t iona l t ies and commoninterests obliged them to play a

special role to work in a moreconcrete way towards peace. Theyspelled out their commitment to the

right to existence and security of allthe states in the region, includingIsrael, and justice for all the peoples,which implies recognition of thelegitimate rights of the Palestinianpeople. They denounced settlementactivity as illegal, refused to acceptany unilateral initiative to change thestatus of Jerusalem, urged a justsolution to the problem of Palestinianr e f u g e e s , a n d s u p p o r t e d acomprehensive peace settlementsustained by a decision of the UNsecurity council.However, the EU has too often since

taken the view that only Washington

really drives things forward. Yet whatshould the EU do when Americanpolicy is going nowhere? Notsurprisingly, the secretary-general ofthe Arab League called the so-calledquartet (the EU, US, UN and Russia),w h i c h s u p e r v i s e d t h e n o n -implementation of the road map forpeace, the quartet sans trois.It is true that the US has the primary

external role in the region, and thatany peace settlement will requireIsraels willing agreement. But noneof this justifies the EUs nervous self-effacement. This removes much ofthe political price the US should pay

when it does nothing or too little. Itgives Israel carte blanche. It damagesEuropes relationship with its allegedpartners in the Union for theMediterranean, and makes Europecomplicit in outrageous and illegalacts.It is not only Israel that has believed

collective punishment of the peopleof Gaza since 2007 would weakenHamas. Failure to take more decisiveaction to end a policy described bythe International Crisis Group asmorally appalling and politically self-defeating has spread responsibilityfor that policy. We must all hope

Obamas meeting on Wednesday withM a h m o u d A b b a s a n d t h eannouncement of additional US aid

for Gaza signals a change of approach.Today, the EU should not only call

for an immediate end to the Gazablockade but should work harder topromote reconciliation between thesplintered Palestinian body-politic.The UN should be tasked withpreventing the flow of weapons whilethe EU should take the initiative withTurkey and the Arab League to re-establish a government of nationalunity involving Fatah and Hamas forthe whole of the Palestinian territory.In due course, the EU should monitorfree elections there. You cannot

favour democracy everywhere exceptin Palestine.Without Hamas there will not be a

peace settlement. What we shouldrequire from Hamas is simple aceasefire, acceptance of the outcomeof a peace process provided it isendorsed in a Palestinian referendum,and help in securing the release ofCorporal Shalit. To insist that theyaccept all past agreements is bizarrewhen no such requirement is made ofIsrael. Look, for example, atse t t lement bui ld ing.We should go further. There has

been speculation the US may

consider unilaterally tabling anagreement with a timetable forachieving it. Opponents of thisproposal have questioned whether itwould be wise for the US to thus riskits prestige. The EU could work withTurkey and the Arab League to draftproposals for an agreement to betabled in the UN security council.This may not be immediatelyacceptable to the US but would atleast bring some momentum.The present situation is awful for the

Palestinians, denied a decent life intheir own country, bad for Israel andits prospects for a peaceful future and

wretched for relations between theUS and EU on the one hand and theIslamic world on the other. It is time

Mavi Marmara crew members showthat preparations for a violentconfrontation with IDF forces wereput in motion about two hours before

the boarding began, when the IsraeliNavy hailed the ship and told it tohalt.2. According to the statements, the

a tmosphere aboard the MaviMarmara was tense and the crewnoticed a gathering on the main deck.When they checked the upper deckthey discovered that IHH operativeswere cutting the ships railings withmetal disks they had brought withthem into lengths suitable to be usedas clubs. The crew members said theactivities worried them and that theytried to stop the operatives but wereunsuccessful.I put the two videos together; the

captain is speaking English and thechief officer is subtitled:Heres the transcript from the chief

officer:Statement: I was on the bridge after

dark, before anything happened, thethird captain and I were sent in thedirection of the life boats, where therewere a lot of people and a lot ofnoise. The captain told me somethingwas happening down there, there arenoises, go see whats going on. Therewere a lot of people. I told the third

captain, you are more senior than I,come with me.Q: When did that happen?

A: Around eight oclock, I dontknow exactly when, but around eight.I went down the stairs with the thirdcaptain. We saw a senior person[from IHH].Q: Who?A: That guy.Q: What guy?A: That guy. Maybe the third captain

knows his name.Q: The guy from IHH?A: Yes, from IHH.Q: Whose name does he know? The

name of the guy from IHH who cutthe railings?A: No, the third captain knows him

from IHH. We [the third captain andI] went together, we saw a lot ofpeople milling around and we askedwhat was going on.Q: Did you see them cutting [the

railings]?A: They [the iron rods] were already

cut. It was all over.Q: Who did the cutting?A: I didnt see.Q: Who was holding the disk?A: The disks were lying in a corner

of the stairs and the senior guy[apparently a reference to BlentYildirim] was next to them.Q: The senior guy from IHH?

A: Yes.Q: Who did the disks belong to?A: I dont know, they didnt belong

to the ship. We dont have equipmentlike that on board. On deck therewere metal poles with clips forcables, when I got there they hadbeen cut.Q: When did this happen?A: When it was getting dark. I asked

one of them who cut the poles, and hesaid he didnt know.Q: Was the man you asked a crew

member?

A: No.Q: Did he belong to IHH?A: Of course.

Q: You seem to be saying that thepeople from IHH were in control ofthe ship. Did the crew need theirpermission to move around the ship?

A: Definitely, they [i .e. IHHoperatives] didnt let people theydidnt know move around.Q: Did they prevent anyone they

didnt know from moving freelyaround the ship?A: Yes, definitely.Q: And was that from the first

moment they went up on deck?A: Yes, definitely.Q: How did the IHH operatives

communicate with one another?

A: When they [the IHH operatives]got on board in Istanbul they broughtwalkie-talkies with them. They werehanded out to the IHH operatives andthe crew.Q: Did you [the crew] get them as

well?A: Yes, each one worked on a

different frequency.Q: I dont understand, they didnt let

the passengers and crew go from onedeck to another?A: They could go anywhere except

to the control center they set up onthe bridge.Q: How many IHH operatives were

there on the upper deck.A: Forty.Q: The same forty all the time or did

they change?A: More of less the same forty.Q: Youre referring to the group that

joined the ship in Istanbul?A: yes.So it seems more and more clear that

most of the passengers of theMarmara didnt know what the IHHplans were and possibly wouldnthave approved; yet they must haveknown that the IHH had taken control

of the ship and was calling the shots co-opting the European and Americanflotilla organizers.

It also appears that the passenger/witnesses have closed ranks aroundIHH, not willing to say anything badabout a group that had violent intent.Keep in mind that the crew here issaying that the IHH was alreadycutting iron bars and chains atnightfall; they say two hours beforethe IDF was visible but probablysome 6-8 hours before the helicoptersarrived (at around 4 AM.)This brings up the question of, if the

boats already saw the passengers withthe chains and iron bars from theboat, why the first wave of soldiersstill came only armed with paintball

One of the activists aboard the MaviMarmara managed to get a 15-minute

video out showing the passengersbefore and during the IDF raid.It can be seen at the Cultures of

Resistance site.Gaza Freedom Flotilla Participantsfrom Cultures of Resistance onVimeo.Some interesting parts:Starting at around the 3:00 mark, we

see an IDF helicopter hovering, andthen at least 7 soldiers are seenrappelling down to the deck, muchmore quickly than those that camefrom the first helicopter. It appearsthat the IDF figured out very quicklywhat was going on and ensured that

the mistakes from the first drop,where the soldiers were beaten,would not be repeated.That section of the video was taken

from the deck below the main deck.Even though it appears from otherevidence that the IHH had a core of

some 40 members who were planningto do the heavy fighting and whoeffectively took over the top deck(see next posting and video), therewere people on the second deck whowere also supplied with slingshots(3:40)

They mention having two soldiersbleeding and wounded but Im notsure I see them (6:00) They mighthave been edited out.Some of the IHH fighters are seen,

wounded and dying.Most interesting to me was the

sequence at about 12:30, where anIsraeli boat is speeding alongside theship. Even though it is now morning,and clearly at least an hour since thefirst soldiers dropped onto the ship,the activists are still throwing debristowards the Israeli navy which runsvery much counter to the flotillamembers accounts of a white flag

being immediately raised and a PAan n o u n cemen t o f i mmed i a t esurrender and stopping resistance. Inthis video we hear the captain tellingpeople to go to their rooms andremain calm after daybreak, but wenever hear the audio saying that the
