Principal’s Message

Dear Kipapa ‘Ohana (family),

I would like to thank everyone for making this a memorable school year! As we continue to educate the "whole child" we are focusing on two areas: Culture and Literacy. We are cultivating our school culture by creating a safe and nurturing environment for students to develop a growth mindset so they can continuously grow in all areas and become well rounded students. For Literacy we are fostering a "Love of Reading" by providing time for our students to D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) and listen to their teachers Read Aloud to them daily. We would like to encourage all of our families to continue to foster these two areas at home throughout the summer. Please take time to talk to your children and spend time with them during the summer to foster a supportive Culture at home. Parents please continue to focus on Literacy at home by setting aside time each day for D.E.A.R. and to Read Aloud to your children. Research shows that children develop a high interest in books when they have parents who read at home and read aloud to them. These daily habits will help to develop your children's vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension.

To our wonderful fifth graders, I wish you the best as you move on to middle school! Remember to continue to set goals, work hard, make good choices and live by the Six Pillars of Character. To those students completing grades K-4, who will be participating in our Summer Program, we'll see you on June 12th at 8 am. The 2018-2019 school year will begin on August 6th. PRINCIPAL YOGI

Congratulations to our Principal, Ms.Yogi, for receiving the 14th annual Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award! The $25,000 award is presented annually by the Island Insurance Foundation to a local public school principal who is a visionary, community-minded and has an entrepreneurial spirit.

As the award recipient, Ms. Yogi plans to use the monies to redesign our school library for the use of the extended Kipapa ‘ohana. This would give the entire Kipapa community access to adult education classes, after-school and evening access to technology, and supplies for projects for students from kindergarten through seniors in high school and even college.

Like our Banyan Tree that was planted over 80 years ago at Kipapa, Ms. Yogi’s educational tenure has been rooted and formed here at Kipapa School as a parent, teacher, curriculum coordinator, vice principal, and now as a principal. She is rooted to the Kipapa community! Her heart to serve and celebrate the accomplishments and growth of the students and staff, together with her steadfast spirit to improve and grow as a school community, sets her apart! We’re so proud of Ms. Yogi!

KIPAPA iMAC GROUP

WINS FIRST PLACE

Congratulations to Kipapa’s iMac group for taking 1st place

at the Olelo Youth Xchange Video Competition! Out of 2,071

students who participated Statewide and 983 entries in 18 different categories, Kipapa’s iMac group brought home an award for their Traffic Safety

video, “Driving/Walking Distraction Free.” We are so

proud of you for your hard work and dedication!

21 students represented Kipapa at the 15th Annual Olelo Youth

Xchange Video Competition Awards Banquet on April 26 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Finalist (top 3 in their category)

were selected to attend the banquet where the winner

would be announced. Five of our videos were selected out of

983 videos!

KIPAPA FEST Please join us for Kipapa Fest on Friday, May 18, 2018, beginning at 8:45am. Our

children will delight you with several performances from pre-school to 5th grade.

Walking and carpooling are recommended, as parking will be limited. A limited

amount of handicapped parking will be available. Handicapped seating will be

available along the bottom of L-building.

Please report to your child’s classroom immediately following Kipapa Fest to sign

your child out if you turned in the form indicating an early release. An authorized

person must sign out your child.

Reminder: The bell schedule will be switched for Wednesday, May 16th and

Friday, May 18th. School will end on May 16th at 2:15 and on May 18th at 12:30

pm.

“Attendance Always Matters!”

Aloha Parents and Guardians, Aunties, Uncles, Grandmas, and Grandpas!

Here it is May already and soon summer will be knocking on our door. As we close the

school year, I would like to thank you all for your hard work and effort in getting your

children in the habit of attending school every day. As you already know, attending

school on a regular basis is crucial to academic success. Too often students, parents,

and schools do not realize how quickly absences can add up. Chronic absence -

missing 15 or more school days in a year - prevents students from having a chance to

learn and succeed. It currently affects 7.5 million students nationwide (Attendance

Works, 2013).

As of April 23, 2018, Kipapa School has an 8% chronic absenteeism rate. This means

that 48 students (out of 613) have been absent 15 or more days. If children aren’t in

school, they don’t learn. Many parents work hard at Kipapa School to get their

children to school on a regular basis. We thank you. Let’s continue to work together to

turn around absenteeism and build a culture of attendance in our school.

Library Corner

From Ms. Mori, Librarian Summer Reading Program

At Kipapa, we promote reading by encouraging our students to continue reading over the summer vacation. Research shows that children who continue to read during the summer vacation perform when school resumes. Research also shows that “reading aloud is the single most important factor in raising a reader.” (Trelease) It is also an excellent way to spend quality time with your child.

As an incentive to read, we will have a celebration for those returning students who meet Kipapa’s summer reading goal. The reading log will be sent home in your child’s report card envelope and should be returned to the library by Friday, August 10, 2018. A special invitation will be sent to those who reach the goal.

PCNC update:

Thanks to the wonderful grade 3 parents & grandparents who spent the

morning of April 18th participating with the students in the “Nature Art”

activity. We are so grateful to everyone that took time out of their busy schedule to

support their child.

By having the JRFH event at our school on February 15th, we raised $5, 941.34

for the American Heart Association. Your help and generosity is greatly appreciated,

thank you families.

I want to take this time to thank so many parents and grandparents who have been

able to attend our school activities throughout this year. You have touched many hearts

by volunteering your time. Have a safe and enjoyable summer break.

Kipapa Elementaryʻs Track team participated in the Character Counts Mililani Complex Invitational Track Meet held at Mililani High School John Kauinana Stadium on May 2, 2018. Kipapa was one of five elementary schools that participated in the meet. There were individual events, ranging from 50 meters to 600 meters, and three team events, 4x100m, 4x200m and the medley. Kipapaʻs Track team represented their school to the best of their abilities. Top 3 placers from that day were:

Meet & Greet Evening!

Remember the hectic first day of school, the morning drop-off traffic, unloading and carrying all those school supplies while trying to find your child’s class, and soothing first day anxieties?

Students and parents will have the opportunity to alleviate those “First Day of School Blues.” Kipapa’s Open House Night will be replaced with a “Meet and Greet Evening. Mark your calendars:

Students will be receiving another letter explaining on the availability of the digital library over the summer. It is free! It’s a quick and easy way to access books!
