As the world of technology keeps changing and advancing, Kipapa School has also had to keep up with

these changes and update the Parent Handbook to include Smart Watches as a school contraband. The

rules that apply to a cell phone apply to a Smart Watch. Kipapa School’s Parent Handbook (pg. 13) identifies a contraband item as any item that creates a disruptive

situation when they are brought to school. We appreciate your partnership in helping us keep

Smarter Balanced Assessments by: Dr. Koch

In April, all students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy and Mathematics. In addition, all students in grade 4 will take the Hawaii State Science Assessment. Your child may take the assessments on different days depending on his/her grade level. Please note the specific days of testing below. Your child’s teacher may also notify you via his/her planner of specific testing days. It is very important that your child gets a good night’s rest, comes to school on time, and eats a good breakfast before taking the test.

The purpose of the Smarter Balanced Assessments is to provide you and your child’s teacher(s) with information about the extent to which your child has met identified content standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), requires states to establish challenging standards, develop aligned assessments, and build accountability systems based upon educational results. All students are included in a state’s system of standards, assessments, and accountability.

A parent letter and informational booklet was recently sent home. If after reading it you have any questions regarding the SBA, please contact Dr. Koch at 627-7322 ext. 3054213.

Nonprofit Group Trades A.I.R. Visits 3rd Grade Class

On February 15, 2018, Artist Michael Wang, with the nonprofit organization Trades A.I.R., visited Kipapa School to work with the 3rd graders in L6. He studies and exhibits plants that are "extinct in the wild." He and his team helped L6 plant the rare Native Hawaiian Plant called the Alula in our Wish garden, along with some Mountain Naupaka. We are very thankful for this opportunity to meet artists and learn about our fragile ecosystem.

PCNC update:

100th day celebration with Kindergarten on January 31st was lots of fun...Then Mini-Manapua with the first graders on February 8th was a great way to celebrate Chinese New Year. Thanks to all the many family members who were able to attend to help make these occasions such a success. Thanks again to the many fifth grade parent volunteers who helped the students with “Bread Making” in their classrooms. It’s a good experience for the students to make their own loaf of bread and have fun at the same time!! In March, D-6 will be making bread on 3/6 and 3/8 will be D-7. The Jump Rope for Heart event was held on Thursday, February 15th. It’s always a success when you can bring students, teachers, and parents together to reinforce the benefits of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle besides raising donations for heart research. Thank you for your donations. Students will receive their prizes at a later date.
