COLLEGE PRAYER

God, our Father

We thank you for the life of Bishop Salvado the missionary.

As a teacher, explorer, author, musician, farmer and builder,

he is an inspiration to all.

COLLEGE PATRON – DOM ROSENDO SALVADO

Dom Salvado wrote ‘The 1st March is a memorable day for me for four reasons – It is my birthday, it’s my feast day, it’s my first Mass day and it’s New Norcia’s foundation day’. The first fifty years of New Norcia’s history are dominated by the towering figure of Bishop Rosendo Salvado (1814-1900). Salvado spent 54 years of his life making New Norcia one of the most progressive and successful missions in Australian history. As a Benedictine monk, he had pledged himself to a life-long journey of “conversion of life” aimed at creating better individuals and communities. Salvado’s original vision was to create, among the indigenous people of the Victoria Plains, a Christian, largely self-sufficient village based on agriculture. However, after the decimation of the local populations by introduced diseases in the 1860’s, he concentrated his activity on giving a practical education to the indigenous children who were brought to New Norcia from all over the state. Like other missionaries of the nineteenth century, his aim was to ‘civilise and evangelise’ according to the European ideals of the time, but he did so with sympathy for indigenous culture that was rare in his day. Salvado assumed he had something good to offer and he intended to bring about change in the life of the people he encountered. Salvado led a monastic community, which, at its height, numbered seventy men, most of whom were Spaniards and lay brothers. His several fundraising trips to Europe provided him with the means to acquire land, to construct buildings and to purchase books, vestments, art works and ritual objects as well as stock and equipment. Practical success and his own personal charm combined to make Salvado both a notable Western Australian and an international figure in the Benedictine world. Sadly, in 1900 during a trip to Rome, Salvado became ill and died at the age of eighty-six at the Monastery of St Paul Outside the Walls. His body was brought back to New Norcia by the Community and interred in the Abbey Church where it rests today.

COLLEGE EMBLEM

At the centre of the College logo is the Benedictine Cross, a symbol of Jesus Christ at the centre of Salvado Catholic College. Saint Benedict had a deep love for the cross as a symbol of faith in God. St Benedict dedicated his life to bring the light of Jesus to all people. The Benedictine cross is a constant reminder to the College community to strive to perform good works and exercise true charity and justice towards all. It is a reminder of Jesus calling people to follow him on the path of love, compassion and unity. Dom Salvado, after whom the College is named, was a Benedictine Monk who followed the rule of St Benedict. Salvado came to Western Australia and in 1846 established the New Norcia mission with a primary concern for the care of the Aboriginal people. The olive tree has been associated with the Benedictine Monks of New Norcia since the original grove was established in the 1850’s and 1860’s. The olive branches represent Salvado’s vision of creating a self-sufficient community. They represent the hard work of growing a community that will be fostered in peace and love for the growth of all its members. The circle emphasises the endlessness of God’s love and reflects an accepting Catholic College community, which offers a warm and welcoming learning environment.

The community of Salvado Catholic College follow the example of Dom Salvado and strive to be people of peace, justice and compassion in their everyday interactions both within the College and in the wider community.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION & FAITH LIFE

Salvado Catholic College acknowledges that parents are the first educators of their children. The College supports parents in the faith formation of children by accepting the responsibility of providing a range of experiences which will nurture and develop each child’s sense of wonder in God’s presence and creation. This contributes to the life long process of developing their faith and religious knowledge. Religious Education is the College’s first learning area, and Gospel values will be integrated into all aspects of the life and curriculum of Salvado Catholic College. At Salvado Catholic College children will be actively involved in Prayer Services and Masses which parents/carers will be invited to and encouraged to attend.

The students at Salvado Catholic College who are baptised Catholic will be prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation as an integral part of the Parish sacramental program and celebrated by the whole Parish community.

Students will be involved in raising money for Catholic Mission, Caritas and other charities throughout the year as a way of teaching students about social justice and in doing so, become even more aware of the needs of people locally, within Australia and around the world.

Teachers of Religious Education are required to attend Professional Learning, and to complete their Accreditation requirements, which deepens and strengthens their own knowledge and faith life. Staff members endeavour to witness Christ in their daily lives and attend College and Parish Liturgical Celebrations.

MAKE JESUS REAL - MJR At Salvado Catholic College we also incorporate the ‘Make Jesus Real’ (MJR) philosophy, where we bring the Catholic faith to life for our students by showing them how to live it every day. We strive to give them all the tools they need to feel the Spirit of Jesus each day and find the God Moments that are always happening around them. One of the greatest gifts that we can give our students is for them to see the Spirit of Jesus in themselves and others, to recognise His presence in themselves and others, and to live the Gospel values of kindness, compassion, friendship etc.

Page 21: PARENT INFORMATION eHANDBOOK - 2021

Salvado Catholic College Parent Handbook 2021 (as of 29 January 2021) Page 21 of 33

Vision of MJR The MJR community of Salvado Catholic College will strive to provide:

• a quality, Christ-inspired education for our students so each will gain a strong relationship with God through Christ and his Church.

• a holistic approach so that all who encounter the MJR philosophy will be inspired by the words, actions and teachings of Jesus Christ.

• the opportunities and resources to students so they can discover the values, qualities and attitudes necessary for a faith-filled, positive life.

• a positive outlook for the students for their future so that they can take their place in society and demonstrate compassion for the marginalised.

PASTORAL CARE

Salvado Catholic College places a strong emphasis on the Christian Pastoral Care of individual students, parents, families and staff - Christ being the foundation of our Pastoral Care System within the College. Children are encouraged to see themselves as valued and respected members of their College community and a sense of caring, concern and responsibility towards others is fostered in all children. Staff members are on hand to assist children with solving difficulties and problems they may encounter on a day-to-day basis with the support of parents and carers. The College also has a Student Wellbeing Coordinator to assist students and families in partnership with staff to engage students in meaningful learning, developing resilience and wellbeing. We also have a College-based Psychologist who works in a part-time capacity to support students with their learning, behavioural and social-emotional needs. Students in Year 7 will be a part of a Pastoral Care Group, and the teacher of the Pastoral Care Group will closely monitor the general wellbeing and academic progress of each student.

RAINBOWS PROGRAM

Salvado Catholic College prides itself on the care and support of all our students and their well-being. We understand that at times, some of our students may encounter a change in their family dynamics, whether through death, divorce or separation. Salvado Catholic College offers the Rainbows Program. Rainbows is an effective program which may assist children through their grief process. It is not therapy or counselling, it is peer support under the guidance of a trained, nurturing facilitator. The sessions are held once a week and involve talking and completing activities. It assists children to sort through their confusion, acknowledge their feelings and, by working in small groups with peers encountering similar experiences, the program allows children to understand they are not on their own. Small groups of students meet once a week and discuss a particular topic from the age appropriate activity book. If they wish, students are given the opportunity to share the events of their week, whether they have been happy or sad experiences. Adults, together with the children who attend, are bound by confidentiality, which fosters trust and provides a safe environment for everyone.

NG SAFE: CHILD PROTECTION CURRICULUM KEEPING SAFE: CHILD PROTECTION CURRICULUM

Staff at Salvado Catholic College have been trained in the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum. Developed by the Government of South Australia, Keeping Safe is highly regarded Australia-wide and is being supported by Catholic Education Western Australia.

Parents/Carers play a very important role in child protection. There are a number of topics you can discuss with your child at home that add to the focus areas that will be taught at school.

Page 22: PARENT INFORMATION eHANDBOOK - 2021

Salvado Catholic College Parent Handbook 2021 (as of 29 January 2021) Page 22 of 33

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum is divided into five documents. Each document relates to age or year level groups:

Early Years: Ages 3-5 Early Years: Years R-2 Primary Years: Years 3-5 Middle Years: Years 6-9 Senior Years: Years 10-12

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum is based on two themes: 1. We all have the right to be safe. 2. We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

The themes are delivered to children through four focus areas that increase in complexity: 1. The right to be safe 2. Relationships 3. Recognising and reporting abuse 4. Protective strategies

COLLEGE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT PLAN & BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES

At Salvado Catholic College the individual person is celebrated and accepted for the gifts and talents they bring to our community. Everyone is given the opportunity to succeed in a respectful and safe environment that promotes effective teaching and learning. As part of our College Positive Behaviour Support Plan & Behaviour Management Guidelines, students will be explicitly taught the social skills and expectations to make them effective participants in our College learning environment, ensuring RESPECT, COMPASSION and SAFETY. These guidelines will be regularly reviewed and communicated with all members of the College community. Bullying Students are not expected to tolerate bullying in any form. They will be encouraged to disclose problems in an environment in which they feel safe and have the confidence to speak up. Early intervention is important if behaviour is to be changed. The management of all reported incidents of bullying will involve a team approach between the student, parents and teachers. The ‘Procedure for Intervention’ chart explains the actions the College will take in response to reported incidents of bullying. This chart is located in our Dealing with Bullying and Harassment (Students) Behaviour Policy. This policy can be found on our website – http://www.salvado.wa.edu.au/policies.html

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION @ SALVADO CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Early Years Positional Statement for Catholic Education in Western Australia Catholic schools and care settings welcome children into caring and stimulating environments where

educators give witness to Catholic beliefs, values and attitudes.

At Salvado Catholic College We Believe That Children . . .

Are precious and sacred gifts from God. And so we will . . . Encourage students to be models of Jesus Christ through their thoughts, words and actions. We will encourage children to recognise how unique and special they are and to respect the gift of life that they have been given. We will challenge children to look for the good in all people that they meet.

Should be encouraged to develop a positive image of themselves and others. And so we will . . . Foster children to develop a strong sense of identity and nurture their individual differences. We will cherish the contribution that each child brings to Salvado Catholic College. Are creative and independent thinkers, problem solvers and communicators who learn and grow through play. And so we will . . . Provide students with an environment that encourages and enhances play opportunities to stimulate independence, collaboration and problem solving, as well as experiencing the joy and wonder of our world. Are always learning and are developing in their own time and at their own pace. And so we will . . . Respect the rights and needs of each and every student in our care as well as provide opportunities for personal development and growth. We will recognise the individuality of each child and the important developmental steps that each child must experience with support. Develop strong attachments to those who care for them. And so we will . . . Provide students with caring and nurturing staff who embrace Catholic Education and the importance of teaching and learning in the Early Years environment. We acknowledge the essential role parents and carers, families and educators play in the education of children to develop their sense of belonging, being and becoming.

At Salvado Catholic College We Believe Families . . .

Are the children’s first and most influential educators. And so we will . . . Welcome parents and carers into our College, and our planning will be connected to their cultural context and that of others. Should be respected and actively encouraged to collaborate. And so we will . . . Establish and maintain positive relationships. Are the primary caregivers. And so we will . . . Notify them of important aspects of their child’s development and maintain strong and consistent communication.

Page 24: PARENT INFORMATION eHANDBOOK - 2021

At Salvado Catholic College We Believe Educators . . .

Take on many roles with children and provide holistic learning based on child development and early years pedagogy. And so we will . . . Ensure all staff are committed to Early Childhood Education and provide them with up-to-date and relevant Professional Learning on current pedagogical practices. Provide leadership and are dedicated to their own learning and that of others. And so we will . . . Offer parent workshops and support programs that continue to raise the profile of Early Years Education within our College. Are deliberate, purposeful and reflective in their planning, documenting and evaluating of children’s learning. And so we will . . . Provide a focused and intentional play-based setting that offers students self-paced learning opportunities. We will reflect on our professional practice through Professional Learning Communities. Should respect the history, culture, language and traditions of families and communities and see learning in a social context built on collaboration and community participation. And so we will . . . Show respect for all our students and their families, and provide opportunities for them to share their history, culture, language and traditions with others. Need to work closely with primary caregivers to ensure that strong attachments are formed. And so we will . . . Include parents and carers and provide opportunities for them to be invited into the learning experiences.

At Salvado Catholic College We Believe Our Community . . .

Is rich and diverse. And so we will . . . Work as a team, drawing on the strengths and talents of our staff, families, Parish and wider community. Is central to the children’s lives and their learning. And so we will . . . Participate in community events and invite members of the community to share their expertise within the College.

CURRICULUM

At Salvado Catholic College learning is facilitated through a developmental approach that emphasises cooperative learning, inquiry and the utilisation of various digital technologies. We will provide a relevant, comprehensive and varied curriculum to suit a wide range of student needs, interests and abilities. Religious Education The Religious Education Program Pre-Primary to Year 12 is compulsory for all years of schooling and is mandated by the Bishops of Western Australia. Religious Education is the first learning area in all Catholic schools. Religious Education programs contain both the process and content of what is to be taught in Religious Education. There is a prescribed time allocation for instruction of the Religious Education learning area. In the three and four-year-old program, raising religious awareness is a natural part of the learning experience. A student in Pre-Primary and Year 1 will receive a minimum of 15 minutes Religious Education per day and then up to 30 minutes per day for other Primary years. Students from Years 7-10 are to receive a minimum of 160 minutes per week of Religious Education. Early Years Learning Framework Salvado Catholic College’s Early Years Education program will capture the integrated and complex learning and development of all children by pursuing the five outcomes in The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia – Belonging, Being & Becoming:

• Children have a strong sense of identity • Children are connected with and contribute to their world • Children have a strong sense of well-being • Children are confident and involved learners • Children are effective communicators

The Early Years Framework will be implemented in conjunction with the Western Australian Curriculum and Western Australian Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines within the context of a distinctive Catholic program and is delivered in a play-based environment. Western Australian Curriculum The Pre-Primary to Year 10 Western Australian Curriculum provides a coherent and comprehensive set of prescribed content and achievement standards which Salvado Catholic College will use to plan student learning programs, assess student progress and report to parents. The Western Australian syllabuses remain broadly consistent with the Australian Curriculum but have been contextualised to make them more suitable for Western Australian students and teachers. The following learning areas make up the Western Australian Curriculum:

• English • Health & Physical Education • Humanities & Social Sciences • Languages • Mathematics • Science • Technologies • The Arts

Support & Enrichment As we strive to cater for the needs of all our students at Salvado Catholic College we, as a staff, will be constantly looking at ways we can differentiate and most effectively cater for all student’s needs. Digital Technology The College has wireless Internet access and digital screens in all Learning Spaces as well as banks of iPads available for students to use during teaching and learning experiences. Our Year 4 to Year 7 students are part of the 1:1 iPad program. For both teachers and students, integration and utilisation of the digital technology devices in the College is a focus, to assist in broadening the student’s learning experiences and knowledge in the digital world we live and learn in today.

ASSESSMENT & REPORTING

On-going assessment assists teachers' planning and programming, and specifies any necessary required differentiation of students. Various methods are used to record students’ progress throughout the year and standardised tests in English and Mathematics are part of the Assessment Schedule throughout the year at Salvado Catholic College. Students in Year 7 will be provided with an assessment and course outline for each course they are studying. The assessment outline will indicate, for each assessment, the type of assessment, the areas that the assessment covers, the approximate timing and the weighting applied to the assessment. The course outline will indicate all the content from the syllabus in the sequence in which it will be taught and the approximate time allocated to teach each section of content from the syllabus. For further information regarding assessment policy, principles and procedures please see the College’s website to access Salvado Catholic College’s Middle School Assessment Policy.

Parent/Carer Interviews There will be interviews for parent/teacher discussions on student progress at the end of Term 1 & Term 3 (if required). The exchange of information in these discussions allows the College and home to confer and determine, “How we are doing?”, “How can we do better?” so that individual student goals can be continually reviewed and adjusted if necessary. Interviews may occur more regularly if your child is working from an Individual Education Plan, Pastoral Care Plan or an Individual Behaviour Management Plan. Portfolios & Work Samples Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students take home a folder of work samples to share their learning journey with their parents/carers at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. Year 1 to Year 6 students have a collation of work samples that will also be shared with parents/carers throughout the year. Students in Year 7 will be required to maintain an assessment folder for each course they are studying. The assessment folder is to include each of their assessments and the associated task feedback sheet. Open Night Open Nights provide the students with the opportunity to show their parents/carers their progress and achievements at school, and help to make them a part of our learning community. They also provide an insight into the College life of our students, and give parents/carers the opportunity to positively acknowledge their child/ren’s efforts, and see first-hand the pride and commitment that the students have in their learning. Written Reports A formal report is issued at the end of Term 2 and 4 for students in Pre-Primary to Year 7. This report includes the teacher's evaluation of the child's achievements and development over the year. This report is designed to confirm the information relayed to parents/carers through the parent/teacher meetings, teacher/student discussions and work samples throughout the year.

OF ALL THINGS @ SALVADO CATHOLIC COLLEGE

ABSENTEEISM

If a child is absent from school, parents/carers are required to contact Administration and inform them of your child’s absence by 9:00am. If a child is absent from the College for any period of time, parents/carers are required to either send an email to Administration or send in a signed note to their Learning Space teacher (and in the case of Year 7, to their Pastoral Care Group Teacher) with the following information: date of absence and reason for absence.

If a student is late to school (ie. arriving after 8:40am), the parent must sign their child/ren in through the Administration building in person, and a Transit Card will be given to them to pass on to the Learning Space teacher.

ACCIDENTS

Should your child be involved in an accident at school which warrants medical attention, parents or the nominated emergency contact person will be contacted at home or work. In the event that immediate attention is required, a staff member will access the appropriate medical support and have the parent/carer contacted as soon as possible. It is College policy that a parent/carer is contacted if their child receives a knock to the head, even if no apparent injury has been sustained.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION

Parents/Carers are requested to administer any medications required by their child/ren before or after school. Where medication needs to be given during a school day, parents are asked to keep their child at home or come to the College and administer the medication personally. In circumstances where neither of these options is possible, the class teacher or office staff will administer the medication. However, this will only be done if a College medication request form is completed. Alternatively, a signed formal letter of permission stating the name of the medication, the amount to be administered and the time the medication is to be administered should accompany the child. The teachers, with the administration team, reserve the right to refuse to administer medication where they agree it is beyond their expertise or duty of care.

ASSEMBLIES

Assemblies are held throughout the term. Dates will be published in the College eNewsletter and Term Planner. Each year group will be given the opportunity to organise and present an Assembly throughout the year. For students in Year 7, Assemblies will occur during the ‘Compass Time’ period which is held on a Friday between 9:50am and 10:50am. Assemblies provide parents/carers with the opportunity to see their child/ren's work and become familiar with the types of activities children are involved within their Learning Spaces. Parents/Carers of the students in the year level presenting the assembly will be invited to attend, pending space availability and restrictions.

BICYCLES / SCOOTERS

Children riding bicycles/scooters to school are expected to know and obey traffic regulations and to wear a bike helmet at all times. Bicycles/scooters are not to be ridden in the College grounds. Road Safety authorities recommend that before the age of ten years children should not ride a bicycle/scooter in traffic without adult supervision. Depending on their cycling skills and experiences, some children over this age may still require supervision. It is a requirement of the College that all bikes/scooters are locked to the bike racks – please note it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that this is done.

Page 29: PARENT INFORMATION eHANDBOOK - 2021

BOOK CLUB Scholastic Book Club will be available to students each term. Orders are to be placed online via the LOOP portal. Book Club is a great way to promote reading and a love of literature with your children. Partial funds from each purchase are given back to the College for the purchasing of books for use in the Learning Spaces.

BOOKLISTS

Student booklists are ordered through the College and the costs are added to the College Fee statement that comes out at the beginning of the school year. For students in Year 7, families are to purchase the items on the booklist from Ziggies Educational Supplies.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) plays an important part in the operation of the College and the general management of the College's resources and finances. The CSAC is constituted to assist the College to fulfil its educational responsibilities and to support the Principal, Staff and College community in achieving the vision and goals of Salvado Catholic College. The functions of the CSAC include: a) Planning for the present and future operation of the College. b) The management of finances associated with the College. c) Advising the Principal with respect to College policy that has financial implications. Members are elected to the CSAC at the College AGM and membership is for a period of two years. People may be appointed to the CSAC for a one-year term if the other Advisory Council members consider this necessary or desirable.
