Curriculum Corner Term 2 Week 10 Miss Louise McNamara Acting APC (Assistant Principal – Curriculum) Prep Parent Reading Workshop A reminder that all prep parents are encouraged to attend a reading workshop on either Wednesday 20

th June at 5:30pm or on Thursday 21

st June at

2:30pm. Both workshops will be held in the school library. I’m sure you will find this valuable as your child/ren endeav-our to become readers. Report Cards Our written report card is one of two methods we use to re-port to parents. Report cards are to complement the parent/teacher interview process we offer. Parent/Teacher inter-views will be offered in Week Two of next term. These inter-views will be an opportunity to discuss student progress and the Semester One Report Cards. Report cards will be availa-ble to parents at the end of this term. Please take the time to read this valuable document and share its contents with your child/ren. It is important to praise your child/ren for their achievements and perhaps give them some goals for im-provement. Please be aware of the key for the grading of the report card. The following scales will be used: Prep – Applying, Making Connections, Working With, Explor-ing and Becoming Aware Year 1 and Year 2 – Very High, High, Sound, Developing and Support Required Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 – A, B, C, D and E Parent Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher interviews will occur in Week Two of next term, 23

Sydney Dance Company visit This Thursday 21

st and Friday 22

nd June, we wel-

come teaching artists from the Sydney Dance Company who are providing FREE workshops to our Year 3 and 4 students. Year 4s will participate on Thursday morning and Year 3s on Friday morning. We can’t wait to check out your new dance moves! Parenting Ideas The topic for this week is… Why consistency im-proves kids’ behaviour. One of the simplest ways to improve a child’s behaviour is to be more consistent. Click here to read more. ICAS Competitions Well done to all students who have taken part in ICAS Com-petitions during the past few weeks (and thanks for helping Miss McN to know what to do last week!). We look forward to receiving your results later in the year.

Reading – CAFÉ Accuracy – Strategy: Cross checking ‘Cross checking’ is a strategy for ensuring the words – and sometimes the pictures – make sense and match the letters on the page. Use illustrations, photos, graphs, maps and charts to help gain meaning from the text and confirm that the words being read make sense. Premier’s Reading Challenge Has your child shown you their Premier’s Reading Challenge form lately? Congratulations to all stu-dents applying themselves to this challenge and diligently completing their form as they read each new book. If your child’s form has disappeared, please ask him/her to see their class teacher or me (Miss McNamara) for a new one. Please note that completed forms are not due until August but can be handed into the office any time when completed. News from 6L Mercy Heights has been buzzing over the past semester and 6L students have been challenged in a variety of ways. Ex-citingly, we recently welcomed Mrs Reddy to our class and Mrs Reddy is now teaching in our classroom on Wednes-days, Thursdays and Fridays. We are still enjoying the new furniture that was purchased for the Year 6 classrooms at the end of 2017 and are becoming accustomed to using our pi-geon-holes like lockers…although some of us are still work-ing on our organisation in this area… This term we have regularly joined with our neighbours, 6M, to prepare for our weekly Peer Support sessions. It has been fun (and a little scary) to lead a group of students from across the school in a variety of activities each Monday afternoon. We have loved this opportunity to get to know students and teachers from other parts of our school. We also now have a little more appreciation for how our teachers feel when we are talking during their lessons! We are grateful to Miss O’Neill, Mr Shillington and the Year 5s who have invited all Year 6s to join them in a prayerful start to Tuesday mornings on the Mercy Heights deck during the past semester. We have enjoyed this quiet and peaceful time to reflect on the Sunday Gospel. We have even done some curriculum learning this semester! Recently we have been busy finalising assessments to show our knowledge and understanding of such topics as fractions, natural disasters, the liturgical year, the federation of Austral-ia, the ideal conditions for growing mould, the application of SketchUp and more… We have LOVED having our Chrome-books to use for learning and completing our work too. Have a lovely week! Louise McNamara
