Welcome to Basingstoke Festival of Choirs…Thank you for supporting our very special concert this evening, Basingstoke Festival of Choirs’ second collaborative venture sinceit’s formation in 2011. Our committee felt it important that, as this year is the Centenary of the outbreak of World War I and alsothe 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, we should pay our own special tribute in words and music, hence “A Century of Warand Peace”.

We all owe so much to so many thousands of brave and selfless men and women who have made incredible sacrifices to ensurefreedom for folk they would never meet or know. As a result we have been able to live and work in relatively peaceful times andpursue our own leisure interests, such as music-making. How important and appropriate therefore that we use these skills to paytribute to each and every one of them tonight. The debt we owe is enormous, so we are pleased to be able to support the charityCare for Casualties.

A concert of this scope involves a great deal of hard work. I am particularly grateful to each and every singer for the many monthsof preparation that they have put into tonight's presentation and to our most distinguished narrator, Guy Slater, who has given sogenerously of his time and talent. Marilyn Wright has again proved what a brilliant administrator she is; Hannah Williams’ amazingarts experience has been of inestimable help, along with Joanne Mace and the ever supportive Basingstoke Gazette. I mustexpress also our thanks to the Directors of the Four Lanes Trust for their generous support in enabling us organise a wonderfulchoral workshop in February which laid the foundations for this evening.

I hope that tonight’s commemorative concert proves a worthy tribute to the fallen.

Sincerely,

David OgbornChairman of Basingstoke Festival of Choirs

Basing SingersMusical Director: Stuart HickenAccompanist: Sheelagh HardingRehearse: Wednesdays 7.45pm–9.45pm at Parish Room, adjacent to St Mary’s Church, The Street, Old Basing, RG24 7BW

Basing Singers is a four partchoir; currently we haveabout forty-five members.

We are named after the village of Old Basing where we meet. However, members travel from as far away as Whitchurch,Hook, Cliddesden and Sherborne St John to sing with us eachweek, joining those who live nearer to Old Basing.

We enjoy singing a wide variety of music, sacred or secular, classical or pop, ancient or modern. For example, one recentconcert included a medley from the Disney musical “Beautyand the Beast” then the next concert included the “Magnificat”by Pergolesi.

Our next concert will be in Old Basing Village Hall on Saturday8 November when our guests will be The Hannington SilverBand. As with tonight’s concert the musical items will reflectthe 100 years since the start of The Great War.

In recent years we have been very pleased to welcome anumber of younger singers to our ranks. We would be delightedif yet more young people would come and join us, as they willbe the basis of choirs for the years to come.

Please see our websitewww.basingsingers.hampshire.org.uk/ for more details, orphone our Secretary Mike Leaming on 01256 471493.

Basingstoke Choral SocietyMusical Director: David GibsonAccompanist: Mark KinkaidRehearse: Wednesdays 7.30pm–9.30pm at The Vyne School, Basingstoke

Basingstoke Choral Society has been bringing choral music to audiences in the area since 1889and with over 150 members is currently one of the largest SATB choirs in the South of England. The choir not only specialises in well-known choral works from the repertoire but also performsmore modern choral pieces.

The choir gives three concerts each year and is privileged to have The Anvil in Basingstoke as itsmain venue. We also perform regularly at Winchester Cathedral and have just enjoyedperforming a concert of Baroque music at Douai Abbey. We use professional orchestras andsoloists at all our concerts and this helps us to bring music of the highest standard to ouraudiences.

We also enjoy the opportunity to perform joint concerts with other choral societies. This gives usthe opportunity to perform works demanding a large choir and to enjoy singing in a variety ofvenues.

BCS has been a part of the musical life of Basingstoke for over 100 years. We are enormouslyfortunate in having David Gibson as our Musical Director and thanks to his commitment andinspiration we know we will be singing and performing for many years to come.

Our next concert will be at The Anvil on Saturday 22nd November when we will be performing ‘Elijah’.

Steventon SingersMusical Director: Marilyn WrightAccompanist: Paul WrightRehearse: Fortnightly Tuesdays 8pm–9.30pm at Steventon Village Hall

The Steventon Singers is a recent off-shoot of the SteventonPlayers. The Steventon Players, formed in 2004, are an all-age(currently 2 to over 80!) group of villagers, families and friendswho come together primarily to stage an annual show orpantomime in the village, although they have also appeared atThe Anvil! For one of the smallest villages in the Borough, therange and depth of talent within Steventon is quite remarkable,so it is not unusual for more than a quarter of the residents tobe involved in the Players’ productions.

The enthusiastic singing which is invariably a feature of theproductions has gradually encouraged many of the members towant to get together on a more regular basis just to sing forfun, and so a new ‘community choir’ was born. Meetingtypically once a month the Steventon Singers now have aregular attendance of over 20 members, many of whom do notread music and are completely new to ‘non-unison’ choralsinging. They are enjoying exploring a wide range of music in avariety of genres and styles. Whilst rehearsals are mainly ahappy mixture of fun and fellowship, preparing the music forthis evening’s concert has also involved a great deal of hardwork and commitment.

Seeing a gap in his diary as Musical Director to a number ofOperatic Societies in the Area, Neil Streeter thought it would be a good idea to ask many of hismusical colleagues, together with gifted young players, to give a concert of Light orchestralmusic interspersed with songs from stage and screen sung by friends from Basingstoke AmateurTheatrical Society.

As a nucleus he approached those who had played for musicals he had conducted, and addedexperienced colleagues and students that he knew from his teaching for Hampshire MusicService and Berkshire Maestros. Their busy schedules meant that only one rehearsal waspossible before the day, but such are their sight reading skills and their enthusiasm to play the“lighter” repertoire that an Orchestra of over forty was soon gathered.

Their first Concert raised £1,500 for RADCAM and led to a return engagement this May and thebooking for tonight’s Concert .They have further invites to perform in the Newbury/BasingstokeArea into 2015.

Care for Casualties is an appeal through which The Rifles looks after our wounded, theirfamilies and the families of the bereaved from the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. As aregimental family we seek to look after our family members who are in need, our bereaved, ourwounded and the families of our wounded who are now caring for them. Since our formation in2007 62 Riflemen have been killed in action leaving widows, partners, parents without a son andchildren without a father. Many others are living with injuries, physical or psychological. As anextension of their family we, their Regiment, are able to react with speed and accuracy to meetan anticipated or existing need. Whilst the larger Service Charities and Government agencies arelike Tesco, we are like the local corner shop – we know our customers and we are open 24/7.

Funds raised are spent on a myriad of things: recuperation breaks for the wounded and theircarers, such as a Rifleman suffering from brain damage who benefitted from a break from hispermanent care home by spending a long weekend in a specialist care centre in Blackpool, or theyoung wife whose husband has lost both his legs and whose life has been dramatically changedas she now helps care for him as well as their young children. We help towards house and caradaptations to cover the cost of equipment and alterations not funded by the MoD, such askitchen units which have the flexibility to be used by both the able-bodied and those without legswith the minimum of disruption; we also fund retraining and re-skilling courses to help prepare for a meaningful life after injury. These are just examples. Formore information, please visit our website, www.careforcasualties.org.uk where our newspages and on-line newsletters tell many stories of the individuals we have helped.
