PRINCIPAL’S WORDS The student leaders have been getting very active with students and staff in organising activities over the last few weeks. This week there are more activities that are replacing some community events that usually run at this time. One of these is the Multicultural Festival, which is a major drawcard for Mareeba. Rather than being able to offer food and other activities, the student leaders have developed a presentation that all classes will have on Wednesday, followed by a banner signing during the lunch break. Many thanks to our student leaders who are continuing to look out for the students and the community in a time where activities at school are some of the only options available.

There will also be a beep test competition for houses as part of the school House Cup challenge that will culminate in activities on 11th September. These events are being organised by the student house captains as part of regular sporting activities that have been occurring at lunchtimes. I was lucky enough to be part of the Frisbee competition last week. It is great to see the student leadership and the staff support at this time.

On Tuesday I was fortunate enough to offer the BBQ with the Principal ROLStar Award. There has been a core group of Year 12s who have regularly attended the BBQ each semester. It is a good opportunity to offer something to the students, even though it was under stricter rules around the serving of food this time.

MATHS CAMP 2020

Fourteen of our Year 9 students recently ventured to the shores of Lake Tinaroo for a camp with a differ-

ence. Students migrated to technology-themed groups and then navigated their way through a series of

mathematical challenges over three days. Problem-solving with other like-minded Tableland students sub-

tly nurtured aspirational ideas in most attendees. For almost thirty years, Tableland Mathematics teachers

have developed their favourite maths sessions to complement the established Maths Camp legacy. A high-

light of our 2020 camp were the 3 guest presenters-James Drinnan, Matthew Penn and Gullara McInnes.

Camp coordinator Andrea Schaul attended the camp in 2003. Terry McClelland—HOD Mathematics
