Excellence for All December 2017 Parents’ Newsletter Dear Parents and Carers We are coming to the end of our first term together this academic year. This term has again seen a lot of positive progress for staff, students and the wider community, all of which contributes to the high aspirations we continue to have for Parkside School and its future. Parents’ Evenings, Open Evenings, Christmas Market, Presentation Evenings and the Primary School Harvest Festival have all been hosted here. We have again undertaken numerous educational visits that have impacted significantly on both the academic and social education of our students and have many more scheduled for the coming year. As always the school continues its fantastic charity work, raising significant sums of money for a wide variety of causes. This term saw our student’s raise over £1,000 for Children in Need. Students continue to represent themselves and the school superbly, with the August results again showing continued improvements from Parkside students. Sporting prowess continues unabated with student success in Netball, Cricket and Football amongst others. Our links with clubs such as Keighley RUFC also continue to strengthen and we will be helping to ‘open’ their new 4G pitch in December. We hosted our Australian ‘partner’ school in November, which was again a rousing success. Mr Needham organised a superb programme including a magnificent show which took place on the Friday evening. Friends for life were made and I know we have students who wish to be able to reciprocate the visit if at all possible. The expansion of the school has drawn to a close and ‘snagging’ is currently underway. The way everyone has pulled together ‘in adversity’ is something we should all be proud of and we continue to enhance the resources available to students following the ‘refurbishment’. May I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your continued support of everyone at the school, its staff, students and our community. I hope you all have a happy and relaxing Christmas break. Parents’

Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers We are coming to the end of our first term together this academic year. May I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your continued support of everyone at

the school, its staff, students and our community. I hope you all have a happy and relaxing Christmas

break.

Merry Christmas Mr. A .Taylor Headteacher

We had a fun filled week celebrating National Chemistry Week with plenty of activities for all students to take part in.

Monday saw over 100 students from year 7 to year 11 making lava lamps.

Tuesday students made their own ice cream after learning about the science behind how it keeps its structure.

Wednesday students made slime and got to test its bounce ability

Thursday students got to sample curry and learn about the Chemistry of all the spices involved

Friday students were writing their names with Fire. There was also a book club looking at the explosive adventures of an element hunter.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

In support of our work on Mental Health and Wellbeing, Mr Tague (Deputy Head) and Mrs Butterworth (SENCO) are very proud to have worked with NHS England in creating a framework of competencies for mental health in schools. Agencies throughout

Yorkshire and Humberside were contacted to work together on this project. The Framework is being piloted in 55 schools within Yorkshire and Humberside before being rolled out further, Parkside is a pilot school. It will help us to audit the skills and knowledge of staff and align them to different levels of competency within the Framework.

This has been a brilliant opportunity for Parkside to get involved in such an important project and will have an impact on staff development and the outcomes of young people at Parkside.

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge

Thirteen students from year 12 and 13 sat the UKMT senior maths challenge paper on the 7th November. We had some fantastic results. Well done in particular to Skye Lintott, who achieved a Silver award, and George Turner, who achieved a Gold award and has been invited to participate in the next stage; the senior kangaroo! We wish him all the best.

UKMT Senior Team Challenge - Leeds University

On Thursday 17th November, Mr Coles took four Sixth form students to Leeds University to compete in the UKMT senior team challenge. A fantastic evening was had by all, and the team came 17th overall, after competing against some tough opponents. Well done to, Skye Lintott, Emily Harman, Ben Lewis, and Jonathan Crabtree.

Miss E. Brooksbank Deputy

Head of Maths

In July, a coach full of students and four staff, went to Alton Towers to

learn about how Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are used to

design and develop new rides at Alton Towers, and other resorts.

To keep the students busy on the journey, Mrs Dunn had produced a

workbook, with puzzles and questions to think about at Alton Towers. On

arrival, we went to the education centre, where we listened to an interest-

ing presentation by Education Officer Laura Montali, and learnt how new rides are designed, and

developed, and even recycled! The students listened and asked some interesting questions.

Although it was rather a rainy day, this didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm to go and test out their

response to G-Forces on the rides. Mrs Dunn, Mrs Trowers and Mr Fee were very amused to look at the

results of the G-Forces on Mrs Osgerby by looking at the photo taken during the rides. Mrs Osgerby had

her eyes shut every time, and was not happy with the number 13 wristband she was given on the SMILER!

Samsung Virtual Reality Space Bus

Page 7

The Samsung's Virtual Reality Bus was an amazing 360 Virtual Reality experience which simulates life on board the International Space Station. Students from different year groups were given the chance to follow in the footsteps of real astronauts as they train to go into space, live and work aboard the ISS and prepare for the descent to earth in the Soyuz capsule. They also had the chance to be fitted with a virtual space suit, explore interactive content on tablets and have a selfie form the viewing platform over earth. The students got to experience the descent of the Soyuz capsule from the ISS all the way back to earth.

Dr Hayley Evans Head of Science

We have returned from the annual Royal Society of Chemistry Chemnet Quiz tonight with 11 of our post-16 students and some fantastic results!

We entered a team of year 12 and a team of year 13 students and both teams performed really well. The year 13 students came 6th out of 16 teams, but the year 12 pupils came 2nd out of the same 16. The team work the year 12s showed was amazing, considering their chemistry knowledge is limited compared with all the year 13s there from different schools and colleges. They worked together to come up with a plan to best answer the questions which paid off.

As part of the schools ongoing work with the

Teacher Development Trust, Parkside School

has undertaken a rigorous self-analysis of its

CPD provision to measure its progress since

gaining the nationally recognised Bronze

Award in 2016. The audit covered a wide

range of areas including; Culture and

Wellbeing, Processes and Structures of CPD,

Research, Innovation and Evidence

The audit, conducted by the Teacher

Development Trust, showed significant

development has taken place within the school

and awarded Parkside its Silver status.

Furthermore, Parkside School has become the

first school in Bradford to gain the prestigious

award.

The award is an absolutely fantastic

achievement and reflects the continual hard

work and commitment of all of the staff at

Parkside school. A key development over the

last 12 months has been the incorporation of

lesson study into our CPD. This methodology

has really helped target the use of evidenced

based research in devising strategies to

improve the outcomes of our students. Chair

of Governors Umberto Vietri is pictured

The 6th form students who are researching for their EPQ had a trip to Bradford University Library. The EPQ is the Extended Project Qualification where students choose their own topic and research it to write 5000 words. This year, topics include the sinking of the Titanic, the decline of bees and North Korea. They spent the afternoon learning how to use the internet to find reliable information and how to find relevant books in the library.

Mrs. P. Woodyatt

Our Student support Leaders, School Nurse and SEN team have just completed LBGTQ training. This is so that we can support our young people remain confident and guide them to expert help during their time at Parkside School. A group of students are going to create a peer support group, with the help of Barnardo’s, so that our LBGTQ students’ needs are met.

This was a very positive training experience which we hope will impact across the whole school.

Football @ Parkside

Both boys and girls football has gone from strength to strength this year. We have had some success in both the West Yorkshire Cup and the English Schools Cup...notably the Year 11 boys who made it through to the second round, which was an excellent achievement. Our U13 girls also represented Parkside in the English Schools Cup, but were unfortunately beaten by Crompton House School, from Oldham. Nevertheless, it was an excellent experience for all involved. The Year 11 boys also made it through to the quarter finals of the West Yorkshire Cup, but were narrowly defeated by St Bede’s on penalties. Our Year 8 boys are still flying the flag though, as they are due to play Roundhay School in the

quarter finals. We would like to wish the Year 8 boys all the best for this game.

We have also entered teams into the local festivals and these have been really effective, as we have managed to get A and B teams taking part. Weekly training sessions are still ongoing and the turnout for these is the best we have ever had.

All in all, it has been a very successful time for all those involved in football at Parkside...long may this continue.

Other Activities

We have also had excellent numbers turning out on a weekly basis to attend the badminton, table-tennis and gym clubs that we have on offer. It is great to see so many students taking part and getting involved.

Parkside PE department would like to say a huge well done to all students who have taken part in extracurricular this year!

Rugby @ Parkside

The commitment and enthusiasm for Rugby Union this term has been outstanding with years 7 - 11 playing in the White Rose Schools Series, leading to over 25 individual games across all year groups. In addition, to this the boys Year 9 and Year 11 squads have also represented the school well in the Yorkshire Cup. Links between the school, Keighley RUFC and RFU continue to flourish with communi-ty coaches currently attending weekly sessions for the U12 squad in preparation for the Dyson Trophy at Keighley RUFC as part of their official opening ceremony for their new 4G pitch on Saturday 16th December. Rugby training will continue on a Thursday after school for all years throughout the winter months, everyone is welcome!

Sports Hall Athletics @ Parkside

The Year 8 boys and girls indoor athletics teams partic-ipated in the Bradford Winter Schools games qualifiers on Wednesday 29th November at Beckfoot Oakbank. The effort and attitude applied by all involved was ex-cellent leading to a great team performance with some outstanding individual displays particularly from Maisie Pickard, Jenson Watson, Miller Parker, Arty Green-wood, Sam Harvey-Seawood and the boys relay team who all won their track event. Congratulations to the Year 8 boys team who have progressed to the games finals after winning the qualifying round!

Industrial Centres of Excellence

Parkside year 10 Health and Social Care students enjoyed a very informative trip to the School of Health Studies at Bradford University. They took part in speed dating sessions with 10 different employers, the objective being to find out as much as they could about possible careers and different career routes in health, social care and early years sectors. They got lots of inspiration-al advice about what they need to do to achieve careers in these different care sectors and hopefully will now be thinking about what type of career they want when they leave school be that Nursing, Midwife-ry, Nursery Nurs-ing and Nursery Management, being part of the Children and Young People's workforce as play assistants, children centre managers, social workers, social care assistants, or residential care assistants and managers.
