Dear Friends of St. Louise, We are already at mid-January of a whole new year, and most of us are settling right back into our pre-holiday habits of life. Adults are back at work, the students at St. Louise School have a full week of classes under their belts for 2019, the Christmas decorations have been put away for another year and the usual patterns of life and work are beginning to feel normal again. As good as the holiday times are, it can take a little while to adjust back to life as usual. Our life in Christ, however, is far from just life as usual! If we are not growing spiritually, we are actually falling behind – becoming weaker in our faith. There is no such thing as just “maintaining” in the spiritual life. Our spiritual life is something like our income in everyday life. If we make the same amount of salary year after year, we are really making less each year, because the cost of living is constantly going up. If we have not grown in our faith since Confirmation, for instance, we won’t be as well-prepared as we could have been to face life’s challenges as people of faith. In my own life personally, I can easily see that my spir-itual maturity as a teenager or young adult would not be nearly enough to sustain me in my life as a middle-aged (!) priest today. I am now well into my fifth year with you as your pastor at St. Louise. Archbishop Sartain often says to pastors, “Leave your parish in better shape than you found it.” I want to do so much more than just maintain our parish and school. I want to be the best steward that I can be as your pastor, and I want to help us all to grow and keep growing. That is the major reason that we have the Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) retreats in the Fall and Spring each year. I know, from the comments and messages I’ve received from those who have attended thus far, that these retreats have made a real difference for people. I certainly hope that we will continue to grow in that opportunity. After some discussion with the pastoral staff and others, I have decided to give special emphasis to the call for us to “go deeper.” The message of the Gospel for the weekend of February 9/10 is exactly that call: Je-sus asking Peter to lower the nets deeper for a catch. I will preach at all the Masses that weekend, and will ask you to complete a short survey to help the parish staff and councils and commissions plan for the 2019-2020 Pastoral Year. We will continue to focus on our Parish Mission: to “Ignite Faith and Witness God’s Love.” I deeply appreciate your support and prayers, and l look forward to hear-ing your input to help us to continue to grow in our faith. With the hope that comes from our faith in God,

Fr. Gary Zender

Padre Gary Zender

Topic: Faith Over Fear: Standing with Our Muslim Neighbors When: 7 - 9PM, January 30, 2018 Where: Cross of Christ Lutheran Church 411 156th NE, Bellevue, WA 98007

Each year the Islamophobia industry spends over $30 million to make Americans afraid of Muslims and Islam. We don’t have to live in that future. Together we can build one based on our shared values and vision for America.

We are inviting faith leaders from all churches, mosques, syna-gogues and temples as well as civic and community leaders to join Aneelah Afzali (MAPS) and Pastor Terry Kyllo (Lutheran pastor serving as the executive director of the Treacy Levine Center) for an overview of the Islamophobia industry, the threat it poses to our nation and all our civil liberties, and what we can do about it together.

You can find an article about The Faith Over Fear Roadshow here: http://features.crosscut.com/muslim-christian-lutheran-pastor-

fight-islamophobia-washington-rural.

Please join us for this exciting and informative event supported by the St. Louise Ecumenical & Interfaith Committee and the Covenant Committee. For more information, contact Gary Makowski, 425-641-8303 or [email protected] or Sherry Bupp, [email protected].

Become an EM, Sacristan, or Usher The next training session for EM (extraordinary ministers of holy communion), sacristans, and ushers will be held in the church at 10 AM next Sat, Jan 19. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering to help during Mass – or if you just want a refresh-er – please come. We’ll also cover using our computer schedul-ing program at the end of the training. If you have any ques-tions before then, contact Rich Barth, [email protected]

SAVE THE DATE – Come and Explore the Signs and Symbols of the Liturgy St. Louise Parish Liturgy Day 2019 Saturday, February 16, 10AM – 2PM

Join us Saturday, February 16 for our annual Liturgy Day retreat. This year we will explore the signs and symbols of the liturgy: Expe-rience Their Power, Reflect on Their Meaning. Catholic liturgy is a

rich language composed of music, words, silence, objects, natural elements, movements, pos-tures, gestures, and ritual actions. Each of these elements serves to open our hearts, minds, and bodies to the presence of God, allowing us to participate deeply in the mystery we cele-brate. Join other members of our community as we explore the signs and symbols of the litur-gy in prayerful, participative reflection, recognizing the role of the human senses in our liturgi-cal prayer. Through poetry, music, movement, and interaction with the symbols of the liturgy, we will discover the connections between Mass and our daily lives.

All parishioners are welcome to attend. At noon we will break for lunch. Following lunch we will run thru the MSP scheduling program then each ministry will have an opportunity meet with their liturgical coordinator to discuss concerns and go over procedures.

The link to register for liturgy day will be available next week. For more information please contact [email protected]

Stewardship • La Corresponsabilidad

Called to Serve as Christ – A campaign for our

PRIESTS, SISTERS & FAMILY OF FAITH "The Called to Serve as Christ campaign is an expression of our

deep gratitude to those who have gone before us, especially our bishops, priests, and reli-gious sisters, for the tireless ways they have lived out their vocations for the Lord and for us." - J. PETER SARTAIN, ARCHBISHOP OF SEATTLE

St. Louise Parish will be participating in the Called to Serve as Christ campaign May 2019 – November 2019 together with the Eastside, Northern, and Snohomish parishes. To learn more about the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign, please visit www.calledtoserveaschrist.org.

Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) CRHP is a long-running St. Louise Parish program aimed at supporting our parishioners with their continued growth in the Christian life and helping them to find a greater sense of intima-cy and connection within such a large parish community. It was established with everyone in mind – literally with the goal of every adult parishioner joining in a Renewal Weekend Retreat. Next retreats are: WOMEN - April 27 & 28, 2019, and MEN - May 18 & 19, 2019.

Women’s Bible Study Please join us for a new Bible study series at St. Louise Par-ish. Our first focus will be on excerpts from the Gospel of John using a Bible study program published by Dynamic Catholic titled, “Turning Point.” This program includes workbooks for participants and brief lectures on DVD – there is some recom-mended “homework” to do between sessions, but the workload is light and we are confident that any level of involvement will be rewarding. We will be meeting the first and third Thursdays of the month, from 8:30-10AM, in St. Louise Parish’s Center Wing Room B (CW-B). A second group will be meeting in parallel, also on the first and third Thursdays of the month, from 7:15-9PM, also in CW-B. You are welcome to join either of these groups, or to attend sessions of the one that best fits your schedule on each meeting day. If you have any questions, please contact Ingrid Flaat at 425-443-9151 or Caya Sanz de Santamaria at [email protected].

Art Open Studio Group Come every Wednesdays to the St. Louise campus to paint! Whatever your chosen medium is - watercolor, acrylic, oil or mixed media—or whether your work small or large, you will have fun. Bring your brushes, paints, paper, or canvas; whatever you bring, you will enjoy meeting with other artists and learning new techniques. We will have plenty of room to paint and the room will be filled with conversation. You have too many disruptions at home, or can’t find time to paint? Make your painting time weekly at St. Louise Classroom “B” of the Center Wing (CW-B). Contact Dolores Marquez, [email protected] or 425-283-2909.
