New Testament Models of Leadership in the Church

Some thoughts about Models of leadership…

All these Bible verses above indicate Servant Leadership and warn against the

danger of power in corrupting leaders. We need to be guarded against

personal ambition and power struggles. We need to seek to understand the

particular context of our Diocese and the needs of a new leader.

Litany of Discernment for the Election of the Bishop of Natal

L. In these days before the Elective Assembly to elect a bishop, it is appropriate that we bring our prayers to almighty God, asking for discernment and guidance, that in all our deliberations and conversations, the Holy Spirit might be present and make known to us a chief shepherd of God’s own choosing.

L. Let us pray. Gracious Lord, Heavenly Father, in all ages, you have raised up faithful servants to shepherd and guide your holy people and to make known your will among us. Increase in us the gifts of discernment and understanding in this time, that we may know and do your will as we prepare to elect a bishop for our dioces.

C. Send your Holy Spirit among us, O Lord. L. Open our minds, our hearts, and our eyes that we might see as you see

and choose as you choose a shepherd of faith and godliness. C. Send your Holy Spirit among us, O Lord. L. Open our ears and guide our tongues that, in all our conversations, our

listening and speaking might be filled with your grace and favour. C. Send your Holy Spirit among us, O Lord. L. Raise up for us a chief shepherd to lead and guide the work of our

Diocese C. Raise up a shepherd for us, O Lord. L. Call forth a shepherd of wisdom and strength for the duties of oversight

and counsel. C. Raise up a shepherd for us, O Lord. L. Make known among us a shepherd of compassion and grace to care for

our diocese, our clergy and our leaders. C. Raise up a shepherd for us, O Lord. L. Bring forth a shepherd centred in Christ who can build up your Church

and unite your faithful people. C. Raise up a shepherd for us, O Lord. L. Send us a shepherd of learning and understanding who can preach and

teach, guard and interpret the apostolic faith of the Church of Jesus Christ.

C. Raise up a shepherd for us, O Lord. L. Send us a shepherd who is filled with the Holy Spirit to encourage and

support the mission and ministries of our diocese. C. Raise up a shepherd for us, O Lord. L. Almighty God, you are our guide and our Good Shepherd. In you we

place our hope and our trust. Hear the prayers of your faithful people and lead us in these days until you bring us to one mind and one heart in you and you show us that shepherd and bishop of your own choosing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

We praying for: Builders, plumber, electrician and handypersons Signwriters to replace signage to please offer themselves to help us in this project!.

Contact the office with your details or the details of a reputable person- even your family members.

Education and Training/Counselling Ministry

Lay Ministers have held their monthly meeting on 19/05/15 at St Mark and attended a Regional workshop with other Lay ministers from our Archdeaconry on 20/06/15 at St Barnabas Church on Bluff. The focus at both sessions was on counselling as many of Gods people are suffering trauma, abuse and very difficult circumstances in their lives. Canon Delysia led the meeting in May during which reading material was distributed and the lay Ministers engaged in role playing sessions to learn more about counselling. The session at the Regional meeting was facilitated by Mr Mike Pitso, Deputy Director of

Department of Social and welfare. He shared further readings and equipped us with skills and information regarding establishment of shelters and care for victims of abuse, poverty, disaster etc. Information is available from the office.

Churchwardens and Parish Councillors attended a workshop on 3/05/15 which focused on the Code of Conduct including legal/financial matters of the church. This was an Archdeaconry workshop held at St Etheldredas and facilitated by Revd Thato Tsautse who had invaluable input with her legal background.

Confirmation candidates are attending regular Saturday morning sessions led by Phumzile and Michelle in preparation for their confirmation in December. Thanks to the parish for sponsoring their one-day Retreat on 29 August 2015 at Koinonia.

Sunday School teacher Salo attended a workshop in February at St Gabriels to learn new activities for the Sunday School. She shared the Sunday School verse which she found to be very appropriate: Proverbs 22:6 “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they will not turn from it”

Women in the parish will be addressed by Cheryl Kirsten from the Anglican Womens Fellowship (AWF) on 11 July. WaG has invited Cheryl to share the aims and objectives of AWF with all the women in the parish.

Fellowship and Worship Ministry

Men of the Parish attended a breakfast hosted by the Youth and members of WaG on 13/06/15. Besides a scrumptious breakfast, the men heard about the work of the Bernard Mizeki group in the Diocese and they each received a small gift from the Youth. We pray that the men in the parish will unite and come together more often to enjoy fellowship, prayer and service one with another as they strengthen each other in their Christian journey.

Women of the Parish are invited to attend the monthly WaG meetings on second Saturday of the Month where they can join in fellowship with each other and share in all the excitement of the activities and various opportunities of service planned for the rest of the year.

Youth of the Parish held a youth braai – which had an educational session by Canon Delysia. The purpose of this session was to remind the youth why we commemorate this day, (Soweto uprising – 1976), and how does it impact or benefit the youth of today. Youth shard three things they would take and three things they would leave behind in order to survive in this world.

The aged and pensioners were treated to a great lunch and movie treat hosted by WaG in the St Mark Classroom during May.

Youth led the singing at a Youth service held on 14/06/15 at St Mark. Thanks be to God for the enthusiasm and commitment of the youth in preparation of the service. The aim of the youth led service was to empower the youth in our

church, as they are the tomorrow’s church elders. It is my strong belief that as church elders, we have a responsibility to support and nurture talent. A proposed future plan is to have these youth led services at least once a quarter. Thanks Mpume for your commitment to the youth.

Children involvement in the services of the church is well co-ordinated and facilitated by committed and dedicated teachers Salo and Sherryl. On Mothers day 10 May, the children shared poems, songs and gifts of little verses for each day. On Fathers day, 21 June, they shared a gift and song in the service.

Visiting priests, Fr Les Henwood (3 May 2015) and Fr Thokozani Mngomezulu (21 June 2015) enriched our worship by preaching and celebrating the Eucharist with us.

Social Responsibility

WaG visited The Ladies Ward at King Edward Hospital on 13 June. Approx. 6 ladies from WaG and 3 men who attended the Men’s Breakfast visited the Hospital. They sang, prayed and talked with the patients. Each patient was handed a small gift, which consisted of a face cloth, toothbrush and paste and a cake of soap. A bookmark which contained a bible verse in IsiZulu and English was also made by the WaG ladies and inserted into the gift pack. The visit was well received by the hospital patients and staff, and WaG’s aim and purpose of taking God to the external environment was achieved, just by showing others LOVE.

Bellair Primary School Outreach Programme Revd Beryl and her blessed team of men and women share their success with this programme which is based largely on the part of the willingness of each one of you who give so generously of your time and donations. We currently make sandwiches for a number of children who cannot afford to bring a lunch to school. Each person can make a significant difference to those in need. You are encouraged to get involved and see how you can make a difference! May the Lord richly bless you all.

A letter from a Young Parishioner who is studying away from home

As human beings, through life we face many stages and challenges but I think it's safe to agree what really defines our adulthood is during our teenage years. Teenagers are sometimes deemed the "burden" of society due to their infamous rebellious nature but though we all go through that stage most parents don't actually understand the pressures modern teenagers do. In today's modern society common parental fears such as alcohol and substance abuse is no more the major cards of destruction but after an article I read a while back, it says due to the world getting a lot

Page 14: PARISH OF BELLAIR - All Saints, Bellair, with St Marks ...allsaintsbellair.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/28...% % allsaintsbellair@gmail.com%% % %%parishofallsaints@telkomsa.net%

smaller through media, Internet, the average teenage brain is FORCED to grow up much faster than teenagers 15-25 years ago. Teenagers are being exposed to serious issues such as sex and substance abuse at such a young age, that modern teenagers at times are prone to adapt to more mature ways of thinking and acting. Obviously at a time when they are not ready. The media have developed superficial role models that we look up to as "inspirational " and we can't help but try to be like them as we are infatuated with either their looks, lifestyle, power or likability. Top executives at major networks have a team of behavioural psychologist who are payed to construct ways we as teenagers will be drawn as viewers. They pray on our insecurities. This is called "soft power". A persuasive approach typically using economic or cultural influence. The very worst thing I think a parent can say is "I've been there before". And simply said all teenagers that act out of disobedience are crying for one thing and that is either: to love or be loved.

So how do you cope with especially for those who are away from parental guidance and influence. An environment where you answer to no one and all the "pleasures" of the world are at your fingertips?

A. Know Yourself - it's great to be with friends and company but should you make life altering decisions, regardless whether deemed good or bad, it's YOU who will carry the consequences. Not your friends. Not your parents. Not your significant other. You.

B. Love yourself - you cannot love anybody else before you love yourself. And to love yourself is not to wake up every morning and take a selfie as an act of appreciation. It's to respect your body. appreciate your flaws. Be proud of your who you are and where you from. This builds character . We all have insecurities. Accept them. Nobody is perfect. Nobody. (even Jesus refused to be called good)

C. Talk about it- talk to a friend who you trust AND respect, who you look up to, the most about your issues. 9/10 they understand what your going through. Have a mature conversation about the challenges you facing. You're are not alone.

D. Seek professional help- there are many organisations especially for varsity students which were established for students who are not coping

Page 15: PARISH OF BELLAIR - All Saints, Bellair, with St Marks ...allsaintsbellair.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/28...% % allsaintsbellair@gmail.com%% % %%parishofallsaints@telkomsa.net%

socially, academically etc. It doesn't make you crazy, your taking action in your life to better the one only true asset you should worry about- YOU

E. Meditate/Pray about it- in a world filled with so many superficiality seek for peace within your life and remind yourself that there's something bigger out there for you than this world. It will grant you peace within and understanding.

F. True intentions - if you do smoke or drink, ask yourself why? Some do it out of anxiety from pressure to perform academically or to play a role within their cliques. Cause most of all our parents just fear that we are not engulfed by these pleasures. All addictions are bad. Simply put cause we find that we cannot survive without that thing as our reasoning. Whereas in fact psychological aspects can also influence our behaviour of how we think and act. What is the true nature of our actions?

Lastly teenagers are not stupid and at the same time are very vulnerable. I know this, cause I am one. We all need guidance at times. We have fears. Trials. Tribulations. Pleasures. Pain. We experience so much it can be overwhelming. But most of all we seeking to be heard. So, parents, listen.

"Touch in Church"

written by Ann Weems in Reaching for Rainbows, 1980, Westminster Press

What is all this touching in church? It used to be a person could come to church and sit in the pew and not be bothered by all this friendliness and certainly not by touching. I used to come to church and leave untouched. Now I have to be nervous about what's expected of me. I have to worry about responding to the person sitting next to me.

Oh, I wish it could be the way it used to be;

Page 16: PARISH OF BELLAIR - All Saints, Bellair, with St Marks ...allsaintsbellair.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/28...% % allsaintsbellair@gmail.com%% % %%parishofallsaints@telkomsa.net%

I could just ask the person next to me: How are you? And the person could answer: Oh, just fine, And we'd both go home . . . strangers who have known each other for twenty years. But now the minister asks us to look at each other. I'm worried about that hurt look I saw in that woman's eyes.

Now I'm concerned, because when the minister asks us to pass the peace, The man next to me held my hand so tightly I wondered if he had been touched in years. Now I'm upset because the lady next to me cried and then apologized And said it was because I was so kind and that she needed A friend right now.

Now I have to get involved. Now I have to suffer when this community suffers. Now I have to be more than a person coming to observe a service. That man last week told me I'd never know how much I'd touched his life. All I did was smile and tell him I understood what it was to be lonely. Lord, I'm not big enough to touch and be touched!

The stretching scares me. What if I disappoint somebody? What if I'm too pushy? What if I cling too much? What if somebody ignores me? "Pass the peace." "The peace of God be with you." "And with you."

And mean it. Lord, I can't resist meaning it! I'm touched by it, I'm enveloped by it! I find I do care about that person next to me! I find I am involved! And I'm scared. O Lord, be here beside me. You touch me, Lord, so that I can touch and be touched! So that I can care and be cared for! So that I can share my life with all those others that belong to you! All this touching in church -- Lord, it's changing me!
