Dear Parishioners, A Thanksgiving Story. As a boy in grade school, I remember doing a thanksgiving project in class where each student drew a turkey by tracing their hand on a piece of paper. The thumb was the head and the other fingers represented tail feathers. Our teacher then asked us to write on each tail feather something we were thankful for. I do not remember what I wrote. It was probably something like my family, my home, my country and friends. However, what I remember is what the boy sitting next to me wrote on his turkey. You see, Danny had lost two of his fingers in an accident; thus, his turkey had only a head and two tail feathers. On one feather he wrote he was thankful for his family. On the other feather he wrote he was thankful for his hands. Danny’s thanksgiving was unique. Perhaps it was because he had come so close to losing his entire hand that he realized what a precious gift it was—even if it wasn’t complete. It seemed unusual to me at that age, to give thanks for something I broken. Yet, Danny’s gratitude was sincere. Giving thanks is more than an acknowledgement of blessings. It is instead the affirmation of life, despite the obvious suffering, brokenness and guilt it may involve. It is the acceptance of unbearable hardships for no other reason than a willingness to participate in this life. Being thankful means recognizing all life as good—not always enjoyable or easy—but necessary and received from God. In gratitude we are called to grow in the acceptance of life and all it may bring. We are asked to see life for all it is and embrace it whole-heartedly. For in doing this, we acknowledge the supremacy of God’s wisdom and generosity, and, like Danny display the genuine spirit of thanksgiving. This week as we celebrate Thanksgiving, please remember to thank God for all you have received. Gifts may not always look perfect to us, but each is a reason and an opportunity to give thanks to God. Fr. Jeff
