NOTES FROM FATHER EDGAR…
FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING LOVE IS KING
Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. We also celebrate the last Sunday in ordinary time and prepare to welcome a new Season of Advent. It’s a time for endings and a time for new beginnings. The question is how we are going to end and how we are planning to begin anew.
The gospel for today’s Mass points us towards a new beginning. It may seem obvious what that is but, do we truly accept it as the truth? Is Jesus truly what we claim Him to be in our lives? Who is Jesus?
Pilate, of course, did not know who Jesus was, so he asked, “Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answers by making a distinction: Did that statement come from Pilate (a Roman) or from others (namely Jews?) If by “king” he meant a rival of Tiberius, then the answer is No; if it meant the Israelite Messiah, then the answer is Yes. Pilate asked: "Then you are a king?" The answer given by Jesus is, Yes.
With this answer, Jesus makes it clear that he claims to be a king and, equally clear, that his kingdom is not based on force (like Tiberius’) but is a kingdom that resides in the hearts of all people. He is not denying that he aims to conquer the world, but it is a conquest of love.
At the end of the interchange, Jesus tells Pilate why he came into the world: He came to witness to the truth; he came to tell humanity the truth about God, the truth about themselves, and the truth about life. The days of guessing—of fumbling around in the darkness—are finally gone. He has come to tell the world that God is Love, that we are his children, that we are all brothers and sisters, and that love itself is the way, the truth, and the life—the only hope!
Are we truly buying into His truth? Is Love truly our King? We Christians possess the truth, and that truth will come to full fruition one day and make us free in Jesus, our Lord and King.
May we “believe what we read, teach what we believe, and practice what we teach.” (If you have a chance, please, read Matthew 25: 34-40. Love is the answer indeed!)
TALKING ABOUT ENDINGS AND NEW BEGINNINGS…
Father Bob’s sabbatical is finally over… phew! I’ll say that I developed a much greater appreciation for the Pastor’s job. It’s not easy…believe me! I also developed an even greater appreciation for all the staff members in our parish. Without their support, my little gray hair would not have been so little anymore.
The greatest support however, came from all of you, parishioners of St. Cletus Parish, who welcomed me and treated me with much respect as an administrator. I appreciate the fact that, after Sunday Mass, some of you came to appease my worries and concerns by pointing out that the church was still in one piece!
I thank our Pastor for trusting me with all of you. It was a great experience, but the time has come for the reins to be back in Fr. Bob’s very capable hands. I thank God and him for the opportunity.
Now, I am going to Puerto Rico for a short vacation and will see you again, God willing, before Christmas, not as the Administrator, but as Fr Edgar.
Thanks again for everything you have done and do to support our parish—a parish that lives its faith and continues to build its future.
May God bless you all. Hasta la vista! Fr. Edgar

CHRIST, THE KING The selection from the book of Daniel presented in today’s first reading was part of an attempt to weave a vision of ultimate success for the Jews under persecution. Exactly whom the author had in mind when he refers to “one like a Son of Man” is hotly disputed by scholars today. The fact is, we simply do not know if the author meant anyone in particular or if this is a collective, figurative image of Israel’s triumph. What we do know is that the early Christian community seized upon this passage and recognized it as a messianic prophecy, a foretelling of the ultimate triumph of Jesus as the Christ of God. The Lectionary’s juxtaposition of this text with today’s Gospel narrative of Jesus before Pilate is a wonderful example of how the liturgy “layers” passages with new meaning by inserting them in a particular context. The celebration of Christ the King allows us to hear these passages with a new depth of meaning in light of our contemporary understanding of how, in Jesus and his resurrection and ascension, we have seen the fulfillment of Daniel’s vision of ultimate deliverance. The veiled admission of Jesus before Pilate that he did indeed have a kingdom “not here” takes on new meaning against the cosmic vision of Daniel, who allows us to glimpse the “Ancient One” on his heavenly throne. THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE Two Sundays ago at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, four adults and two teens who are making the journey in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) celebrated the Rite of Acceptance. Alyssa Fitch and Ashley Olivarez were accepted into the Order of Catechumens – those who are preparing to be baptized. Clyde Bradley, Bonnie Burns-Vigacek, Melissa Phalen and Nicole Whetter were welcomed as those who were previously baptized and are now preparing to complete the Sacraments of Initiation or be received into full communion of the Catholic Church. The rite of acceptance into the order of catechumens is of utmost importance as it is the first time the candidates for baptism publicly declare their intention to the Church and the Church, in turn accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. Joined to the Church now in this public moment, the catechumens are now part of the household of Christ. With joy, the church also welcomes baptized but previously uncatechized adults who wish to complete their Christian initiation through Confirmation and Eucharist or to be received into full communion of the Catholic Church. These candidates express a desire to be one with us at the table of the Lord by following a path of prayer, service and love. Two central symbols are part of the rite… Sacred Scripture and the sign of the cross. The Catechumens make their first acceptance of the Gospel, promising to listen to the Word and allow it to be their guidance. Next the Catechumens and candidates are signed with the sign of the cross as those who are marked as belonging to Christ who is to be their strength and the hope of their salvation. We pray for these sisters and brother of ours and look forward to the day they will share fully with us at the Lord’s Table. Fr. Ken Baker Associate Pastor/Worship Ministry

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Despite the fact that the feast of Christ the King was established less than a century ago, it has already undergone a shift in focus. When Pope Pius XI established this feast in 1925, nationalism and fascism were on the rise. The pope intended that it be a “vehicle for spiritual teaching,” one that would recognize the ultimate authority of Christ over all political and social scheming. The last Sunday of October was chosen as the date for the feast because of its proximity to the feast of All Saints, those men and women who bore witness to Christ’s reign in so many different ways. The calendar reforms of 1969 moved the feast to the last Sunday of the liturgical year. There, in the context of November’s focus on the end times, Christ’s second coming at the end of all time is highlighted. The threefold cycle of readings also expands our imaginations in regard to this feast. In this year’s Gospel, Christ stands before Pilate, whose own power blinds him to the truth of the Lord’s kingdom. In a world where oppression still holds sway over too many people, this feast is somehow still as timely as when Pope Pius XI first established it. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

On Saturday, October 27, 2012, a group of 50 parishioners and friends enjoyed a trip to The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians at Holy Hill (https://www.holyhill.com/) and Cedarsburg, Wisconsin, organized by the CREDO Outings Subcommittee. The weather was spectacularly sunny with clear, blue skies! The Lord was watching over us. Once we arrived at Holy Hill, everyone was able to either walk the grounds or attend a rosary prayer group prior to attending mass. After mass, we received a personal presentation about the history of the shrine and the founding of the Carmelite order in Wisconsin by Fr. Cyril Guise followed by a delicious homemade meal by Holy Hill kitchen staff. We then walked the outdoor grounds, visited the museum, prayed the Stations of the Cross and at the shrine, climbed the tower, and of course visited the gift shop! Our second stop was Cedarsburg Wisconsin, where we had a group tour of the Cedar Creek Winery that dates back to the 1860’s, complete with a wine and cheese tasting, and time to shop in this picturesque historic village. The bus rides were enjoyable, with snacks, coffee, water and more snacks to and from, and we were also able to view a couple of movies on the bus television system. It was a beautiful day! We hope to plan another outing in the spring, probably to the Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John Indiana.

ADVENT GIVING TREE
This Advent, our Giving Tree outreach provides many opportunities for you and your family to respond to those in need, to ensure they receive their share of the richness of God’s gifts given to us. Take a tag or two from the trees in the Church narthex to help us make the holidays a little brighter for those in need in our community. Instructions are on the tags. Encourage your friends to take a tag, also!
Volunteer to accept gifts at one of the Masses on the weekend of December 8-9 (Junior high students and up) or to help sort gifts in Church on Sunday, December 9, from 2:00-6:30 p.m. (High school students and up). Transport gifts down to St. Agatha’s Parish in Chicago on Sunday, December 9, around 4:00 p.m. Please consider helping out, especially if you have a van or truck. Sign up to help out in Morrissey Hall on Sunday, December 16. We will be accepting food baskets from 7:30 a.m.— 11:00 a.m.+ organizing food baskets and family gifts until 1:00 p.m., when we will begin distributing baskets/gifts to our community families (high school students and up). Our day will end around 6:00 p.m.
A SPECIAL REQUEST: If there is anyone in our parish who is able to donate some new boxes for us to use for the groceries we are distributing to our local Giving Tree recipients on December 16, please contact Mary Beth Ford at (708) 215-5418 or [email protected] and we can work out details. Contact Mary Beth Ford at (708) 215-5418 or [email protected] to volunteer, or for further information. FOOD PANTRY Thank you to all parishioners who purchased “turkey bucks” at the Countryside Jewel store in November. Those funds went towards pre-cooked traditional Thanksgiving dinners, which Jewel prepared for us to distribute to some of our food pantry families on Tuesday, November 20. All interested Food Pantry families signed up for a “chance” to win one of these delicious dinners. At time of printing, the final number of families we will be able to serve is not known… but we do know from past experience that all the families will be most appreciative of a delicious Thanksgiving meal! Thank you! Mary Beth Ford Director of Social Concerns
