She helped cook lunch for the Over 50s group, organised outings and designed leaflets. Above all, she was a good listener and had time for everyone who needed her.

WELCOME to Park Life. We have been enjoying some wonderful weather recently, so I hope residents will come out and sign-up for some of the projects and activities we are putting on this summer. some community activities (page 3) which I hope you will enjoy this summer. CPP will also be attending the ‘Love Clapham Park’ Fun Day on 4th August 2018 so I hope to see you there. Donna C Henry MBE, Chair, Clapham Park Project

Born in Greenock on the west coast of Scotland, Elspeth was the youngest of three siblings. From an early age, it was clear that Elspeth wanted to explore the bigger world.

A TRIBUTE TO AN AMAZING COMMUNITY CHAMPION ELSPETH ANDERSON

She cared about the community and even when she became very ill and was at the hospice, she was still thinking about coming back to volunteer for our befriending project. Elspeth was a true friend of the Clapham Park community and we are very privileged that she came here to live.

Having lived in America, Germany and Scotland, she moved to London to look for work and after a spell in a homeless hostel, she was offered a flat on the Clapham Park estate with her young children. Despite having to work two jobs to keep the family going, Elspeth started volunteering. Elspeth’s volunteering record is impressive, including being a Beavers leader; CAPE summer project (Community and Police Enterprise); fundraising and Treasurer for Rainbow pre-school. Her boundless energy benefitted the Clapham Park residents. Her list of involvement is endless, ranging from being an Ambassador for the Time Bank Project (health and mental wellbeing); running an arts and crafts after school club; and then Treasurer of the Over 50s Social Club; Secretary of the Clapham Park Tenants and Residents Association and Vice chair of the Clapham Park Neighbourhood Forum. She helped cook lunch for the Over 50s group, organised outings and designed leaflets. Above all, she was a good listener and had time for everyone who needed her.

Clapham Park Project has been awarded a 2-year grant to provide a new project to teach adults basic bike building and maintenance skills. We are particularly targeting 2 groups: those who are seeking work who would use the bike to travel to interviews, training or work and parents who cannot afford a bike, but whose children have already made a bike through our existing project funded by Young Lambeth Co-op. if participants do not have their own bike, we can provide them with a free second-hand bike donated to us by British transport Police. The project aims to build the confidence of infrequent or new cyclist from all backgrounds to increase the uptake of cycling. It will also give families the freedom and opportunity to go cycling together as a family. The new “Build & Earn a Bike in Clapham Park” project started in May. If you are an adult who live or work in the Clapham Park or neighbouring area, and are interested in finding out more, please contact Ching Wah on 020 8678 5922/ 07958 337 305 or email her on [email protected].

DON’T MISS THIS EXCITING OPPORTUNITY.

“I joined the adult bike building course so that I could learn general skills needed to keep a bicycle in good working order and to have a bike which would allow me to accompany my son on bike rides. He attended the children’s course a couple of years ago and enjoyed learning how to look after a bike as well as being able to show his parents how to fix problems too! My son loves cycling and is looking forward to us going out together; he keeps asking me how long before my bike will be ready to ride!”

CPP successfully secured funding from Awards for All to employ a community development worker. Are you a local person who is passionate about community work? If so and you live in the Clapham Park area, we would like to hear from you. As part of Clapham Park’s Community Development Strategy, the worker will deliver this work on behalf of local people developing community projects/activities for the direct benefit to the wider community, in Clapham Park. If interested in joining Clapham Park Project e-mail [email protected] and we will send you further information. The role is part-time and the working hours are by arrangement.

CLAPHAM PARK PROJECT IS HIRING

In March, we advertised to recruit new trustees and the response was very good. We had a good number of applicants who had the skills and experience we were looking for to strengthen the CPP Board. I would like to introduce one of our recently appointed trustees, Ken James, who has lived in the Clapham Park area for 4 years and joined

NEW TRUSTEES

the Board of CPP in June 2018 after seeing an advertisement in our Park Life publication. Ken has worked in the social housing sector for 12 years and currently serves as Head of Leasehold for a G15 Housing Association in London. He has specialised in estate & block management and service charges and has been a Member of the Institute of Residential Property Management (IRPM) since 2013 and an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) since 2014. In his spare time Ken is an ardent fan and season ticket holder of Tottenham Hotspur but also enjoys spending time with friends and family checking out London's local exhibitions, bars and food!
