The importanceof routinemaintenanceBy Jasen Law JLP Motorsports, Inc.

Your RV furnace may be the most tem-peramental appliance in your RV. Theignition system can perform flawlessly andthen out of the blue, it can totally fail. The so-lution? Simple, periodic inspection of yourRV furnace will go a long way in averting fu-ture problems. The older the RV or motorhome is, routine maintenance only becomes

more important and if it is more than fiveyears old, your safety depends on it. Whilethere are numerous safety features built intorecreational vehicle furnaces, their longevityand operating efficiency rest squarely onyou, the RV owner.

Furnace Inspection Checkpoints1. Check outside vents for sootSoot is byproduct of improper combus-

tion that means you have a problem. Carbonmonoxide is the other byproduct of im-proper combustion so a furnace exhibitingsoot at the outside vent should be inspectedand repaired BEFORE operated again.

2. Check return air vents (insidecoach at the furnace)

Return air vents should be free of dustand lint and should NEVER be obstructed.Remove the return air vent and inspect thecase of the furnace to be sure it is clean andfree of obstructions. Eventually a dirty motor

and blower will slow downand the furnace will lose ef-ficiency, and if the blowerslows down enough the fur-nace will not operate.

3. Inspect heat ductsat the furnace

Heat ducts should be in-spected at the furnace firstto insure they are properlysecured to the furnace andthat they are not leaking.

Your RV furnace is theone area in which oneshould not skimp. Your com-fort and safety far outweighany reasons to shortcut hereand safety, in and of itself,should mandate giving yourfurnace the attention it re-quires.

Don and Marla Johnson, Baker Acres re-sort managers, along with our famous andfriendly Paul Bunyan at our entrance, arewelcoming back our regular ranchers aswell as many new ranchers for the winterseason.

Don has kept the park crew sprucingthings up all summer with new sidewalks infront of the recreation hall, painting re-

strooms and doors and additional perimeterfencing. Marla tells me she has been busyregistering and welcoming new ranchers tothe park with only a few seasonal lots leftopen. This certainly speaks well of the hos-pitality they continue to extend.

Carefree Resorts and the Baker Acres ac-tivity committee joined forces and rebuiltthe entire bocce court. The area has beenresurfaced with new sideboards added. Newpermanent carpeting has been ordered andshould be in within a couple of weeks.

Bench parts have been ordered and will beinstalled within a few weeks as well. Allbocce players are looking forward to a ter-rific bocce season.

Activities in the park continue to expandthis year. With a new projector installed atthe end of last year that provides largescreen viewing, there will be the addition ofSunday night at the movies. Some of theother activities include two water exerciseclasses each day, horseshoes, shuffling,poker, cribbage, pinochle, euchre, bingo, ce-ramics, line dancing classes, bible study,church services, table tennis, music jam ses-sions, chair volleyball, all of which are heldat least on a weekly basis if not daily. There

are also many other activities not listed thathappen on a seasonal basis such as yardsales, craft sales, luncheons, holiday mealsand much, much more.

With all of the above to do and partici-pate in, the ranchers at Baker Acres certainlyhave a full and active season ahead.

Why is the weather so unpredictable? Wehad such fantastic cooler weather, then therains came and now the cold front. Time toget the “hoodies” out and put the shortsaway for a while at least. But, it can changeso quickly.

So many people are asking about thetree with those beautiful pink flowers —we always called them rain trees, but I stilldon’t know the proper name for them. Theyreally give our area something beautiful tolook at. If anyone knows what they are, letme know.

We still haven’t located the missing yardornaments that have disappeared from theNewland and Michaud yards. Keep youreyes open for a concrete figure of a raccoonholding an ear of corn and several gnomes.

Rusty and Betty Siler served coffee anddoughnuts for our recent coffee social lastweekend. Dee and Vic Botting, along withLoretta Green, served this week. Thank youall!

Our attendance is really picking up fastand it’s exciting to see who is returningnext. Several families returned last week —John Bowens, Lee and Randal Smith, Ottoand Marge Reinbold, Clayton and HelenMartinson and Joan Clate. Welcome back!Mert and Lois Wyant are celebrating their58th wedding anniversary, and OttoReinbold celebrated his birthday on the11th.

We are so sorry to hear about the passingof Johanna Ott and send our condolences toher husband, Les, and the family.

Russ Heffelfinger is chairing theThanksgiving dinner once again this year.We always have great helpers and so no onehas to work that hard. We’ll have the usualdinner with roast turkey, gravy, mashed pota-toes, green beans, cole slaw, candied sweetpotatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls and butterand for dessert…it should be pumpkin pie.What a super menu and all this for $6.Tickets must be obtained before Nov. 21 orno dinner. Carol Cooper has volunteered to workup the monthly calendar for us again andthat is quite a job. All the chairmen shouldcall Carol with your projects and plans soshe can get it on the calendar for thatmonth. Carol is very busy designing andprinting the tickets for our entertainment.The first show will start right after the NewYear with Ronnie Prophet on Jan. 14. Ticketswill go on sale before the Christmas holi-days.

Ed Snow and Eddie Morehouse spon-sored a Welcome Back doggie roast Youand many people enjoyed the friendshipand hospitality. What a nice way to get to-gether to meet your neighbors and newresidents.

Our bus trips are going great. Hard RockCasino at Immokalee has been the favoritetrip so far, with the Gasparilla Parade a veryclose second. I’ve even started taking reser-vations for the Railroad Museum and theStrawberry Festival. Our longest trip this sea-son will be to New Orleans in February. Ifyou would like to hear more about thesetrips, call me and I will send you a tourschedule.

Here at Grove Ridge, across the streetfrom Southfork, winter residents are return-ing daily. Activities are starting — sewing onMonday, golf on Monday and Wednesday,and bingo will begin Wednesday evenings.Our first fall coffee social was Nov. 5 withrolls furnished by carefree.

Upcoming events were discussed withthis list of entertainment scheduled: Janand Joe Edwards in Dec., Rick Chapman

and Tony and Trish in Jan., Kid Fiddlers inFeb., and Trey Drees in March. Dances arescheduled for New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s,St. Patrick and end-of-year parties.Residents are reminded to get their craftsready for the craft sale on Feb. 12 and alsostore items for the park-wide yard salethat day.

First of all, I would like to welcome oursnowbird residents back for the winter sea-son. Our park is gradually returning to itsseasonal status and the fun and activities arewell on their way to beginning. Our first cal-endar for the month of November has beenproduced by Sherry Christopher and sheonce again has listed new and old activitiesfor each day of the month. A big thank yougoes out to Sherry as she produces this cal-endar each month of the season for our use.

Ladies golf is already beginning and al-though it is a bit chilly, I am sure the ladieswill be warming up the golf courses withtheir game. Cribbage players will be gather-ing in the hall on Monday nights at 6:45p.m. so feel free to join in the fun.Shuffleboard players are meeting each dayof the week so if you can only join in on acertain day, be sure to come on down andjoin them. Several craft classes are to beheld in the back buildings so if you are inter-ested in stained glass methods, ceramics, orwood carving, be sure to check the dates onthe calendar for your choice and time.

Food and friendship are always impor-

tant items around Palm View Gardens andthis season will not be neglected. AlreadyArty Harberts began the season with hisSaturday hot dog lunch and already, this wasa big success. Pancakes are a once a monthdinner here at our park and ready to begin.On Sundays, once a month in the afternoon,residents gather at the pavilion (weatherpermitting) to have our “Happy Hour.”Snacks are always available and be sure tojoin your friends for this fun time.

Thanksgiving Dinner for park residents willat 1 p.m. Nov. 25. If you would like to attend,you will need to sign up with a hostess foryour table. Sign up sheets are always posted onthe bulletin board in the back of the hall. MarySmith is the chairperson for this event. Turkeyis furnished by the Friendship Club in connec-tion with the Wilder Corporation.

Already our Saturday morning coffee anddonut hour has grown with many park resi-dents meeting at the hall to get theweekend started. At this hour, Arty Harberts,Friendship Club president, announces activ-ities for the week and any other interestingitems. New residents are always welcome tojoin in and be sure to be introduced.

A note of neglect on my part. In the firstissue of the paper I wrote an article about

the Michigan Picnic and the committeemembers. I inadvertently missed the nameof one of the members, Beth Burton. Sorryabout this Beth. I know it takes a lot of folksto put this summer activity on to make itsuch a success. Good job to all of you.

Throughout the season Palm ViewGardens has guest performers appear for ourentertainment enjoyment. In the past, CathyKeating was the park activities director; how-ever, this last season, Cathy announced thatshe would be resigning. Bonnie Pratt willnow be in charge of the Sunday night enter-tainment schedule. Cathy did one fine jobthroughout the years and we sincerely thankher for all of her efforts. In the same thought,we wish Bonnie the best. Watch the specialentertainment bulletin board at the front ofthe hall for future entertainers, date and time.

Just a reminder. It is not too early to beginthinking about New Year’s Eve Dance andcelebration so gather up your buddies for afun filled evening. Tickets will be $30 percouple and will be on sale shortly. Be sure tokeep watch for this event. A poster is locatedon the bulletin board in the back of the hall.

During this past summer we lost several ofour good friends. Our sympathy goes out totheir families. Also, to those who are ill andnot able to participate in our activities wewish you a speedy recovery. You are missed.

On a lighter note, a celebration of 50years of marriage took place for Harold and

Karen Heck recently. Many of their friendsand family joined them for dinner at Maine-lyNew England and then returned to the PVGHall for cake and snacks. Our sincere con-gratulations to Harold and Karen for manymore years to come. It should be noted thatHarold and Karen have been married for 50years and that they have lived in Palm ViewGardens for 25 of those years. Thanks go outto their daughter Lynn and other familymembers for putting on such a lovely cele-bration for a terrific couple.

Those of us whocome from the northadore the cool weath-er of the past week. Itwas glorious goingthrough the fall ritualof putting away sun-dresses, shorts andT-shirts and replacingthem with sweaters,long sleeve shirts and

corduroy pants. Heck, I even have a friendwho put flannel sheets on her bed.

Here at The Laker and Park News, abouthalf of our staff comes from the north —Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, New York,Pennsylvania, Indiana, Nebraska. No matterhow many years we have lived in Florida,we still relish November’s drop in tempera-tures and subtle changes in color. Even mydogs have been a bit giddy on their walks,pulling at their leashes and urging me topick up the pace as the cooler weather in-vigorates them.

It is an interesting oxymoron that as wedream about wearing sweaters and scarves

our seasonal residents are arriving from thestates we left behind praying for sunny daysand 80 degrees so they can wear tank topsand flip flops.

It doesn’t really matter whether it is tanktop or sweater weather. November is theperfect backdrop for our annual GreatTurkey Giveaway, which you will find on thenext page. This is the third year Park Newshas sponsored this contest, which givesreaders a very good chance of winning aturkey dinner for six from Sonny’s Bar-B-Qin Zephyrhills.

If you thought only the young, small kidswent trick or treatin’ on Halloween, you foundout that wasn’t the case in Southern Charm.The happy “older kids,” Jack and Kay LynnRider, dressed in M&M costumes and wentbegging. Every year, the Riders dress in theirM&M costumes and give out bags of M&Ms tofriends and neighbors in the park. This year,they made a slight change in their giving.

Helpers Pearl Smith and Audrey Pitcherrecently learned of the need for food itemsat Zephyrhills Neighborhood Care Center.Collecting food has always been an ongoingproject at Southern Charm, but because theneed is so great right now, the idea of beg-ging for food on Halloween was formed. Sothis year. the Riders collected a food item inexchange for the M&Ms they gave out.Going door to door between 5 and 7 p.m.on Halloween, people were generous withtheir offering.

Driving golf carts throughout the park,the carts quickly filled up with food items.Drivers Judy Linton, Pearl Smith and AudreyPitcher made several trips back to unload.When finished, a total of 340 items were col-lected for the care center.

There is a shortage in all food pantries

right now. With so many individuals out ofwork, the pantries may be their only sourceof food. If we are able to give back duringthese difficult times to those in need, let usdo so. Southern Charm is thankful to havethis couple plus the many other volunteerswho give their time and energy to make ourpark what it is. During this Thanksgiving sea-son, many Zephyrhills residents will bethankful to receive food for theirThanksgiving Dinner.

Not only was it a good night for begging,it was a fun time to be a “little” kid again!Thanks, Southern Charm family, for comingthrough once again. And many thanks toJack and Kay Lynn Rider, Judy Linton, PearlSmith and Audrey Pitcher.

It was a boo-ti-ful evening at Southforkwhen a group of characters descended onthe clubhouse for an evening of festivities.There were cowboys, cowgirls, convicts, an-gels, doctors, demented patients, witches,goblins, gypsies, hippies, witches, wenches,pirates, an old geezer pretending to be apumpkin and a rapper.

The evening started off with vittles ofbeans and wienies, fried chicken, cole slaw,chips and soft drinks followed by somespook-tacular cake.

The party really got groovin’ with theSouthfork Jammers taking center stagewith a few rousing renditions of their fa-vorite selections. The whole group wasentertained by the Southfork Line Dancersfollowed by a skit including two ofSouthfork’s favorite cross-dressers who ledthe group in a SF favorite, “The ChickenDance.” They went into the crowd to pickout some “victims” for an impromptu com-bination waltz, square dance and the bossanova. No one qualified to make a guest ap-pearance on “Dancing With The Stars.”Prizes were awarded to the funnies, silliestand scariest costumes.

When Howard Jeffries bought 35,000acres of land, he would not have been ableto envision what the area would be like 100years later.

Today that land is the city of Zephyrhills,which turned 100-years-old March 10, 2010.

“This city is just rich in history that youcan never know it all,” said Zephyrhills histo-rian Madonna Wise. “I was so interested inthe history that I wrote two books on it.”

Her first book is “Tapestry-Zephyrhills: AnAnthology of its History Through Education,”and the second is “Zephyrhills: Images ofAmerica,” which was released this year.

Before it became Zephyrhills, the areawas called Abbott, named after alocal doctor named J.M. Abbott.The word station was added tothe town’s name after two traindepots opened.

Jeffries, who was a retiredUnion Army captain, first cameto central Florida looking for aplace to farm.

“A lot of soldiers moved toFlorida and started farms be-cause Union Army pensionswere small,” said Margie Partain,member of the ZephyrhillsHistorical Association. “Theycould get two harvests eachyear, which many people could-n’t pass up.”

Jeffries bought the land in 1909 fromJames Lee Greer, who owned Greer Sawmill.Jeffries first planted the property in 1910.

“The reason people say the town wasfounded in 1910 is because that’s whenCapt. Jeffries divided up the land and startedselling it to people,” Partain said. “That al-lowed other people to move to the area. Youcan’t very well have a town if no one canbuy land and move in.”

Zephyrhills was officially incorporated asa city in 1914 when the Zephyrhills ColonyCompany was formed.

How the city got its name is not clear,but two main stories are generally acceptedamong the historical association. The first is

that there was a strong breeze on top ofLeHeup Hill, which is where Jeffries signedthe contract for the land. The word Zephyractually means breezes, so the nameZephyrhills stuck. The other speculation isthe first person to survey the city had eithera first or last name of Hill.

The city is not the only thing turning100-years-old in 2010. The originalZephyrhills High School was founded inSeptember 1910. It was first located on GallBoulevard where the Clock Restaurant istoday. It stayed there until 1926 when itmoved to the present location of RaymondB. Stewart Middle School and finally to 12thStreet.

Around 40 ladies gathered in the club-house at Sundance Park Nov. 8 for themonthly meeting and luncheon.

Before the speakers, President SaraLawson read an article about the history ofVeteran’s Day. It was quite interesting, as weall know it was first known as Armistice Dayhonoring WWI veterans. Through the years,it was changed to Veteran’s Day honoring allveterans. Veteran’s Day is celebrated everyyear on Nov. 11 with ceremonies at 11 a.m.

A Thanksgiving theme was used to deco-rate the tables, etc. A loaded potato/saladluncheon was organized and prepared byConnie Soule and her committee. Everyoneenjoyed the luncheon.

The business meeting began with thePledge of Allegiance to the American flag ledby Sara Lawson. The usual business meetingcontinued with Deb Cross, secretary, read-ing last month’s minutes as well as readingthe treasurer’s report upon the absence ofthe treasurer. The meeting consisted of dis-cussing the upcoming Health and WellnessExpo, as well as future events.

The need for volunteers to read to chil-dren at the West Zephyrhills school wasmentioned. Jean Popp reminded us to savebox tops and labels for education. Theseitems will be donated to that school. This isan ongoing project to help the school. Itwas also mentioned that there is a need fora volunteer to help in the school’s mediacenter.

New attendees, birthdays and anniver-saries were acknowledged. Connie Soulementioned that there is an immediate need

for volunteers for each month’s food com-mittee. These luncheons are prepared andserved by these volunteers.

There was a cancer donation table avail-able with volunteers Dottie Mertz andLucille Satterly accepting donations for thatgreat cause.

The Sundance Park Women’s Club ofZephyrhills will host a Christmas tree deco-rating party at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 to decorate themain tree in the clubhouse and a smaller treein the lobby. The women’s club ladies will bedonating cookies for the refreshments.

The annual Christmas bazaar is from 8a.m.-12 p.m. Dec. 4. This is always a verylarge event for the women’s club. There willbe baked goods, crafts, books, white ele-phants and the usual table with donateditems to be won by some lucky individuals.This event is open to the public and wel-comes all people in surroundingcommunities.

Ladies will be decorating and fillingChristmas bags for the kindergarten studentsDec. 2. These bags will be passed out to thechildren in our meeting Dec. 13. At this meet-ing, the kindergarten children from WestZephyrhills Elementary School will be presentto entertain us with Christmas music, etc.

There are many exciting speakers linedup for the New Year; a class in self-defensein February and a presentation about a tripto Haiti in March. There will be a HeartHealthy Eating seminar March 3. The speak-er will be explaining how to read foodlabels. This will be very helpful informationto aid in proper healthy eating.

All ladies of Sundance Mobile Home Parkare encouraged to attend the monthly meet-ings and activities.

Women’s club hosts special guestsThe Sundance Park Women’s Club of Zephyrhills hosted two special speakers Nov. 8. Mary“Mud” Lane-Huckins, at left, a 26 year cancer survivor and a volunteer from Look Good-FeelBetter provided information about the special needs of cancer patients. She mentioned theneed for volunteers and donations of hats, wigs, special bras, etc. Katie Bryant, marketingcoordinator from East Pasco Medical Center, also spoke about the Health and Wellness Expo.

Over 80 people from Sundance Park par-ticipated in the Health and Wellness Expoprovided by East Pasco Medical Center andsponsored by the Women’s Club ofSundance Park Nov. 9.

A big thank you to Katie Bryant, market-ing coordinator from Pasco Medical Center,and club president, Sara Lawson, for theirwork in organizing the event.

The plan is to have this as an annualevent at the park.

There were 32 vendors and people wereable to get blood pressure checks, check outhealthcare facilities, YMCA programs, foodprograms and more. Door prizes wereawarded to various winners and refresh-ments were available.

More activities have started in our park.Bingo continues every Monday night at 6:30p.m. and all are welcome. Euchre started onTuesday night at 6:30 p.m. and 15 peoplecame down to the clubhouse to play. TannisJackson got the highest score for thewomen and Bill Wright had the highestmen’s score.

Throughout the summer the park hashad a morning get-together for coffee anddonuts each Tuesday morning. Hopefullynow that our president has arrived in the

park, we will have a meeting next timearound.

There was a lot of activity at our poolwhen the temperature was in the 80s, butnow that it has dropped down into the 50s,activities there will probably come to astandstill.

Cribbage should start on Wednesdaynights.

Shuffleboard will probably start up whenmore players return to the park for the win-ter.

We hope to start bridge soon in the club-house.

Winters Park Shuffleboard Club is nowback in session. Tom Churchill and WayneChurch looked after the courts beautifullyduring the summer months. I would like toextend my thanks to both of these gentle-men who did a great job. One set of blockswas cleaned last year and have been workingextremely well over the summer season. It isour intention to have the remainder cleanedthis year to have them all run the same.

David and Dini Rushton of Winter’s Parkwent to Germany this summer for eightdays of shuffling with the InternationalShuffleboard Association. The shuffleboardvenue in Honanroda, Germany was awe-some. The hotel was one of the top tenconference centers in Germany and haswell earned its good name. The meals wereout of this world with everything from veni-

son to wild boar for dinner, and the noonmeals that they said would be light lunchesconsisted of a buffet comparable to GoldenCorral. So, we spent the three weeks inEngland eating!

The American men took first place in theworld tournament and Canadian men tooksecond place. The Canadian women tookfirst place. David Earle, who learned to shuf-fle in Winters Park under the tutelage ofMarshall and Dee Leigh, went undefeated inthe world tournament and was the only per-son to do so this year. The ISA singles willtake place next summer in Dieppe, NewBrunswick, Canada. Betmar Acres hosted thesingles last year and it was a great success.

We will be having the ladies shuffling onThursday morning, and lessons will be givenif there are enough people wanting to learnthe great game of shuffleboard.Shuffleboard will be played every day a 1:30p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fall fun is underwayThe fall activities have started, but there

are a few people that have not yet arrived.Coffee hour started Nov. 3 with 56 peoplein attendance. We are getting ready for our

Every year, about this time, the popula-tion of Zephyrhills begins to swell.

At first, it is barely noticeable. There arefew more cars on the road and some recre-ational vehicles begin to show up bearingMichigan or Minnesota tags.

They may arrive in a trickle, but by theend of the year thousands of seasonal resi-dents will have settled into the city’splentiful mobile home and RV parks.

“The population rises to anywhere be-tween 85,000 and 90,000 in the greaterZephyrhills area up from around 50,000. Italmost doubles,’’ said Vonnie Mikkelsen, ex-ecutive director of the Zephyrhills Chamberof Commerce.

“I look at our community calendar inOctober and November and it is packedwith activities. People are coming back. Thetraffic picks up. Businesses start ringing inmore dollars, and then events just start hap-pening all over,” she said.

Jen Tuttle, manager at the Golden Corralat 6855 Gall Blvd., is familiar with the annualinflux.

“We look forward to it. We certainly ap-preciate our local regulars, but definitely thewinter residents help support the business. Iwould say our volume doubles.”

In a normal week, the restaurant’s saladbar goes through about seven cases of let-tuce.

“I would say we go through anotherseven or eight cases a week when we’re infull swing with the Northerners,” Tuttle said.

Steve Lopez, general manager at PinChasers, at 6816 Gall Blvd., said the winterresidents make a huge difference for thebowling alley too.

“Our daytime business, as you can seeright now, is slow. In another month-and-a-half we’ll be full during the daytime,Monday through Friday, with senior parkgroups,” Lopez said. He estimates as many as750 people join the daytime leagues duringthe winter.

“We obviously enjoy having them here.We have some events that cater to them,and we cater to their individual communi-ties,” Lopez said.

Christine Winters, of Winters MobileHome Park, has been watching the annualmigration of seasonal residents for morethan 40 years.

Her father-in-law bought the mobilehome park in 1952, and before that it wasEastman’s Trailer Park.

The park, at 38022 Winter Drive, has 270rental spaces. Its seasonal residents comefrom Quebec, Nova Scotia and Alberta,Canada, as well as Minnesota, Michigan and

other northern states.They typically begin showing up around

the middle to the end of October and stickaround until about the beginning of April,she said.

Once they arrive, they get busy with cardgames, coffee hours, exercise classes anddances at the mobile home park’s recreationhall and in games on its shuffleboard court,Winters said.

Their presence is also noticeable aroundthe city, she said.

“You can tell a difference in the wintertime,” Winters said, particularly at the local

churches and restaurants. “Most of thechurches here put on an extra service.”

Dawn Smith, an assistant manager at theTwistee Treat at 36305 SR 54, loves seeingthe flock of winter residents arrive. “We staybusy pretty much all day in the winter time,”she said. The ice cream stand starts gettingbusier in December and gets busier eachmonth through March.

Some of the people who start out as win-ter residents decide to become full-timeresidents of Zephyrhills, said Bryan Toll, whois one of them.

Toll is the activities director at Betmar,37145 Lakewood Drive, the city’s largestmobile home park.

For years he and his wife, Donna Sue,made the annual trek south from theirhome in Indiana. In 2006, they decided tosettle in Florida full-time.

Now, Toll keeps busy at the mobile homepark, which has more than 30 clubs includ-ing everything from bridge club to bingo,shuffleboard to Bible study, computer clubto cribbage.

He estimates that roughly one-quarter toone-third of Betmar’s residents live thereyear-round, with the rest coming for thewinter. They begin arriving in October andgenerally stay until spring. Some comedown, return to their other home for theholidays and then return.

Vivian Frizzle of the ZephyrhillsShuffleboard Club (ZSC) teamed withMary McLin, of Betmar tocome within an eyelash ofwinning the Florida StateChampionship at theBetmar Shuffleboard Club.In finishing runner-up,Frizzle qualified as an in-stant professional.

In the men’s division, thebest match of the tourna-ment was the very first oneas Henry Strong and GeorgeDarwin of the ZSC drew theteam of Earl Ball and StanWilliamson. The match wasa three and a half hour war.Everyone that could packthemselves around thecourt was there and theywere not disappointed asthe match went three veryclose games.

In the third game Strong and Darwinhad their opponents by the throat ready toput them away with a 40-point lead, butsomehow Ball and Williamson squirmed

out and won on the last shot. The matchtook so much out of Ball and Williamsonand they barely won the second matchtwo games to one. They recovered to win

the next match easily. In the quarter finals,

Williamson got a lessonfrom Gerald Sharp, who isknown as someone whocan bury opponents in thekitchen. Sharp, of Betmar,buried Williamson in thekitchen one shot after an-other. Ball and Williamsonsurvived and also defeatedWalt Shine and JerryBrandon, of Betmar, in thesemi finals in two games.

The title match wastough with Ball andWilliamson winning gameone and the ZSC team ofElmer Cox and ErnieWaldron won the second.The last game saw Cox and

Waldron get off to a big lead, but their op-ponents roared back and Ball scored thewinner before Cox and Waldron had achance at their next two hammers.
