There was no television and few pictures so the clergy person in your parish tended to be the person you thought of when clergy were mentioned. Then in the 1960s many things changed and with it the image of the ‗Vicar‘. For many Dereck Nimmo and the archaic images of Bishops and Archdeacons that he and his colleagues created in ‗All Gas and Gaiters‘ and ‗Oh Brother‘ or the spin off, ‗Oh Father‘ started to change that. They reflected a less reverential age and they gently pocked fun at clergy as ‗too heavenly minded to be any earthly good‘. Yet clergy were still very much part of the community and one priest, one parish was the norm. I also remember that clergy were still held in high regard as men who made sacrifices when they could have been comfortably off in other professions, choosing to serve their parishioners rather than ‗line their pockets‘. Today things are different. If you ask people what is their image of the clergy it is more likely to be Father Ted, the Vicar of Dibley or even ‗Rev‘. Clergy are much more varied. Sandra Ward will be ordained as a Non-Stipendiary Curate in the five parishes on 30th June at Carlisle Cathedral. Sandra lives in Orton in her own home and gives her time freely to the parishes. She has undergone 4 years of formal training and will undertake a further 6 years as a curate. She will be ordained as a Deacon in the first instance which means that she will be able to take services, baptise, and lead funerals and so on. She will have some pastoral responsibilities too. However she will also continue to work full time so her time will be in great demand and her availability limited at least to begin with. So yes clergy have changed. Just as in the 1950s we had only one or two types of breakfast cereal today we have much more choice. I am pleased to have the wealth of variety of people and their gifts to draw on to serve the people of these parishes. It is different and some, not least me on a busy day, may long for the ‗good old days‘ when the role of the vicar was more ‗All gas‘ than today‘s serving several parishes. The truth is that nothing else has stayed the same and there is much to be positive about in our new more varied clergy roles. I know you will all join me in wishing Sandra every blessing in her new role among us. Beverley The service at the cathedral on the 30th June is at 10.30 am and we are organising a coach so if you would like to come please ring Elaine Allison as soon as possible on 01931 716771 to reserve a seat.

Parkin & Jackson Once upon a time the word ‗clergyman‘ conjured up very a very distinct image. Even if

you rarely went to church, and most people did attend regularly, you knew the name of

the Vicar or Rector and recognised him and his distinctive clerical collar. There was no

television and few pictures so the clergy person in your parish tended to be the person

you thought of when clergy were mentioned.

Then in the 1960s many things changed and with it the image of the ‗Vicar‘. For many

Dereck Nimmo and the archaic images of Bishops and Archdeacons that he and his

colleagues created in ‗All Gas and Gaiters‘ and ‗Oh Brother‘ or the spin off, ‗Oh Father‘

started to change that. They reflected a less reverential age and they gently pocked fun at

clergy as ‗too heavenly minded to be any earthly good‘. Yet clergy were still very much

part of the community and one priest, one parish was the norm. I also remember that

clergy were still held in high regard as men who made sacrifices when they could have

been comfortably off in other professions, choosing to serve their parishioners rather

than ‗line their pockets‘.

Today things are different. If you ask people what is their image of the clergy it is more

likely to be Father Ted, the Vicar of Dibley or even ‗Rev‘. Clergy are much more varied.

Vicars come in male and female and some are non-stipendiary (unpaid) while others are

stipendary. Some give their time and care for a community by living in a tied house (like

Rev‘d Martin Dew did until last month) while still others are completely self supporting.

There are clergy in charge of a number of churches and some who work under the

direction of a colleague. Retired clergy also play a very important part in the ministry

and are very much valued in these five parishes in High Westmorland.

The reason I mention this is that this month we welcome a new member of the clergy

into the team of Readers, Local Lay Ministers and ordained clergy who seek to serve the

parishes of Shap with Swindale, Bampton with Mardale, and Orton, Tebay, Newbiggin

on Lune and Ravenstondale. Sandra Ward will be ordained as a Non-Stipendiary

Curate in the five parishes on 30th June at Carlisle Cathedral.

Sandra lives in Orton in her own home and gives her time freely to the parishes. She has

undergone 4 years of formal training and will undertake a further 6 years as a curate. She

will be ordained as a Deacon in the first instance which means that she will be able to

take services, baptise, and lead funerals and so on. She will have some pastoral

responsibilities too. However she will also continue to work full time so her time will be

in great demand and her availability limited at least to begin with.

So yes clergy have changed. Just as in the 1950s we had only one or two types of

breakfast cereal today we have much more choice. I am pleased to have the wealth of

variety of people and their gifts to draw on to serve the people of these parishes. It is

different and some, not least me on a busy day, may long for the ‗good old days‘ when

the role of the vicar was more ‗All gas‘ than today‘s serving several parishes. The truth

is that nothing else has stayed the same and there is much to be positive about in our new

more varied clergy roles. I know you will all join me in wishing Sandra every blessing in

her new role among us.

HISTORY IN HOUSES by Jean Scott-Smith

No 59 – Brackenber Lodge

The community now known as Brackenber Lodge was originally built as a

workhouse.

The West Ward Poor

Law Union sited its

new workhouse on the

western fringe of the

village in 1877. The

building was described

as being of Grecian

style and was designed

by Messrs. Perkin and

Sons of Leeds. The

cost was £7,000. The

prominent central

tower housed the cold

water tank for supplying baths, the water having to be carried up first!

The original plans are housed in the Local Records Office in Kendal.

The building was designed to accommodate 60 paupers with an additional casual

ward capable of receiving fifteen waifs and strays. The average number of

indoor paupers was 30 and they were maintained at an average weekly cost of

3s. 10½d. The inmates were taken to attend worship at Shap church, and

accommodated in a large box pew to the rear known locally as the ‗Cawf Hull‘.

The inmates received donations from various sources, Mardale records show the

134 eggs collected at their annual flower service in 1898 being given to them.

The celebration to mark the coronation of King George V in 1911, reports that

the inmates of the workhouse were entertained to a dinner, and each was given

plum cake and tobacco. Those who read the 100 years ago article in Shap

Today, will see the workhouse and inmates are frequently mentioned.

Prior to the building of the Shap workhouse, paupers had been located in a house

at Eamont Bridge (the Mansion House). The area covered by the Union was

120,523 acres, and contained a population of 8,218.

Following the closure of the workhouse, the building was used as a children‘s

home, and the Local History Society have received enquiries and information

from former residents and their descendents. At the end of the Second World

War Shap Granite Works purchased the property for housing Displaced Persons,

it later was used for general works housing, gradually being sold off to private

owners.

The Herald 100 years ago May/June 1913

April ended cold and snowy. May was fine, coolish and mostly dry.

On the 27th April, Mr. Isaac Baycliffe died at Plane Trees, Shap, aged 73, in a coma since seizure on the

22nd April. Born in 1840 in Crosby Garrett, his parents took various small farms, soon moving to Kirkby

Thore, Dufton, and Gaisgill. He went to school in Dufton and Tebay. At 18 he was at Sawbridge Hall

(Warcop). His father died in 1859; Isaac, a Primitive Methodist since 1858, aged 18, was already a local

preacher by 1859, and filled his father‘s place. He worked for the Railway till the NER wanted him to

work on Sundays, whereon he flit to Orton as farmer and butcher, and returned to Shap c.1893. At Orton,

he joined the Wesleyans. He had broad views, high ideals, good health, forceful in preaching, was 6 feet

high; a liberal. He was a widower. The cortege left Plane trees (after a short service there) for Orton

Church. His wife was Miss Margaret Jackson (Tebay), who died nearly 22 years ago; they had a

daughter and two sons. His local preaching area covered the Fellside, Sedbergh, Patterdale Parish, and

the upper Yorkshire Dales.

Married in Shap Church, 24th April, Thomas Donald, Workington, to Cissie Jackson, Shap.

The Shap Show of Fell Pony Stallions took place in the field behind the Kings Arms Hotel on 5th May.

The loyal Shap Abbey lodge of Oddfellows held their Whit Wednesday Anniversary Walk, led by the

Inglewood Volunteers‘ Band. Fine day, lot there. From the lodge (in Shap) to Shap Church for service,

dinner in the Greyhound‘s barn. Over 80 Oddfellows, plus guests, there were too many for dining-room.

Shap UDC agreed to Mr. Yare‘s request to lower and re-lay c. 300 yds of sewer to Woodville Terrace. It

will cost £30 (£2400 today); to be done at once. Chapel Terrace‘s privies stink – their owner ordered to

rebuild them. The owner of Oldcorn Cottages to remove some of their occupants within the next 7 days

(overcrowded). The south end of Shap gets very little water as the ram has broken down, but its mender

is away. Shap UDC wants the local JPs to set a 10mph speed limit, but how many of the 8-strong Bench

are motorists themselves? Meanwhile Shap is plagued by cars dustclouds. Road-drain at the foot of Kirk

Bank is working again.

The 30 – 40 breakers up in Shap Granite Works‘ Blue Rock quarry went on strike on Thursday 22nd, in

protest at pay-cut. Still out on 31st, neither side giving ground.

Thomas Hudson, late of the Crown Hotel, will be buried in Shap Churchyard on Saturday 24th; cortege

leaves the Crown at 3pm.

Married at Patterdale Church, 26th May, George Crosbie, Shap, to Mabel Metcalfe, Patterdale.

Cricket: Shap 149 for 6, Tebay 30.

June mostly fine and warm. Thunder, 17th. Haymaking by 20th (early for round here).

Main road near the Skew Bridge at Shap –whose is it, ours or the Railway‘s? (Westmorland County

Council – they didn‘t know either).

Shap Granite Works strike was over by the 7th. Both sides claimed success, amicably.

Wanted, female uncertificated teacher for Shap Endowed School, (Westmorland County Council advert.)

Inquest on the corpse found drowned in the Leith at the Tunnel Bridge north of Shap last Friday morning

John Kay, of Wombwell near Barnsley, the verdict; Misadventure. Buried in Shap Churchyard Tuesday

morning 3rd June. (Found by Walter Mallinson, Shap Beck Cottages, off on foot to school in Shap).

Police Inspector McCann, walking on the A6 north of Shap on Friday evening 13th, saw a cyclist new to

him and called him over. Spun a garbled tale (―Aunt in Penrith‖ – ―Where‖? – ―Can‘t remember‖).

Arrested , then found to be a Liverpool cycle-thief, aged 21; taken back by a Liverpool policeman.

UDC told its Inspector to cure the blocked sewer behind Church Street. As the rock is so near the surface

at Carl Lofts they had to blast it to lay the new sewer there.

Shap Workhouse, later this month, had 22 inmates and 66 tramps (down 79). The General Assistant-cum

-Nurse, Miss Caton, was sacked for refusing to work a 24 hour day for £20 p.a. plus food.

Shap Boys School‘s alterations were nearly finished, by late June.

Married at Shap Church, 25th, Thomas Martin, Church View, Shap, to Frances, daughter of Mr. And

Mrs. George Newton, Beech House, Shap.

Died at Shap, 18th Mary, widow of William Wilkinson Fawcett, aged 82; also Mary Wilkinson, aged 88.

Shap Swimming Pool

The swimming pool should now be open for the 2013 Season and we

are looking forward to a great British summer.

The committee are still working really hard to make the pool a continuing success. There has

been the usual crop of maintenance work to do prior to opening. Thanks to Peter and Phil (the

Maintenance Team!) for the many hours of work - the pool is looking good. The materials

and equipment have been supplied by J T Atkinson and Sons Ltd and Penrith Tool Hire.

The new covers provided by the Parish Council are now on and they are fantastic.

The committee has agreed to keep the prices, opening times and swimming sessions the same

as last year. Now is the best time to get your season ticket so you can benefit straight away.

Don‘t forget that you can book a pool party which gives you private use of the pool and

includes a lifeguard.

Remember we have the exclusive adult swimming sessions (no noisy children!) so call in for a

timetable.

Thank you to everyone who supported the two fund raising events on 13th April 2013. The

sponsored ‗Welly Onesie Walk‘ had 35 Walkers plus 4 Dogs. This was followed by a Games

Night in The Crown, thank you Daniel. Both of these events were absolutely brilliant and

raised a total of £650!

If anyone has the time to help either at the pool or help apply for grants please pop up and let

us know. The pool is a Community asset and only has a small committee who are always

grateful of help.

When you are out and about take the opportunity to promote ‗Shap Swimming Pool – The

highest outdoor swimming pool in England‘. Feel free to take a few of the small flyer leaflets.

We look forward to seeing you poolside and thank you for your continued support

Shap MuGA - Update

As you will have seen when passing the Memorial Park, work has started in earnest on the

conversion of the old tennis court into a Multi-use Games Area. As already advertised, the

funding for this is coming from two major grants from Sport England and Eden District

Council specifically for this type of project, and smaller sums from the Parish Council,

fund raising and other local agencies.

The fencing has been erected, but has needed some fine tuning, ,which is now complete. The

kerbing has also been completed, so hopefully as you read this we will be laying some new

tarmac and then installing the proper polymeric surface on top of that. The next stage is to add

the new floodlighting, for which the electricity supply has been installed. Finally, the new

entrance gate at the Main Street / Croft Avenue junction will be added, and the pathways

completed. All of this is still weather dependant, but we would hope to see completion by the

end of June.

We are sorry that the area has been unavailable for so long, but, in the meantime, we would

like to remind you that this is still a building site with all its associated hazards. We ask those

of you who are trying to beat the system to be patient please. This is particularly true while

the surface is being laid, as any damage while the layers set would be extremely expensive to

correct, and probably cause the facility to be closed before it has even opened.

Further details of availability, bookings and other issues will be published shortly. Please see

the village notice boards and website for these.

Message from the Parish Council

The Parish Council has seen a drastic reduction in recycling credits for the last six-month

period; this is now approximately half the amount received for previous six months.

Enquires were made to Eden District Council who have reported that although the

tonnage rate remains the same, the amount of recycling being left at the site has seen a

significant reduction, and this is the case at most sites throughout the district. The

introduction of kerbside collections are likely be having an impact on this.

Whilst these are very convenient, especially for those of the community who would

struggle to take recyclables to the Recycling Centre, the Parish Council would like to

remind everyone that they receive valuable revenue on the tonnage of the

following items: BOTTLES, CANS, PAPER AND CARD. This all helps towards the

community finances, so would urge residents, wherever possible, to continue to use the

recycling centre for the above items.

The large plastics cage was replaced by several smaller white bins last summer, these

were not viewed as ideal replacements, and a problem arose about the disposal of plastic

bags and wrapping because both the bins and the kerbside bags stated that they are for

plastic containers only. Eden District Council were contacted on this issue too, and said

that PLASTIC WRAPPING AND BAGS MAY BE PUT INTO THE WHITE BINS

along with containers.

The Parish Council does not receive any income from PLASTIC recycling so welcomes

the use of the kerbside bags for plastic containers only.

Remember the revenue from anything collected at the kerbside goes to Eden

District Council, not your community.

Invitation

The Church Wardens and PCC of St Michael’s Church would like to extend an invitation to everyone in Shap to visit St Michael's Church to view and comment on the changes planned for the interior of the Church. St Michael's, like all other community buildings need to be kept up to date with current requirements such as toilets facilities and meeting spaces. You may not attend Church on a regular basis, or at all, but this building belongs to the community and we would like as many people as possible to approve of what we are planning to do. Please come for a chat and a cuppa at any of the following times: 6pm to 8pm Friday 7th June 2pm – 4pm Saturday 8th June.
