A small minority of parents and guardians are continuing to ignore the requests not to park and wait for their children to arrive at the pickup point at the front of the school and outside the refectory.

Please do not remain stationary with your engines running outside these areas if your child is not ready and waiting for you to pick them up. Stationary cars in these areas are also making it difficult and dangerous for cars already in the parking bays to drive out.

Parking outside the refectory is also forbidden as this blocks the zebra crossing and it is difficult for pupils to see when it is safe to cross the road.

School Transport — Tuesday 27 March

The school will close for the end of term at 12 noon next Tuesday.

The buses are scheduled to depart the school grounds at 12:10 for the homeward jour-neys.

Hull Music Festival Success

Congratulations to Zoe in Y7 who came first in a class of eight at the Hull Music Fes-tival earlier this week with a fabulous mark of 89 (distinction).

She played ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ and ‘Mr Longbottom Flies’ from Harry Potter on the flute.

Well done, Zoe.

Spring Music Concert

The Spring Term Music Concert last night (Thursday) was a real celebration of the breadth and quality of music performance at the school. The audience enjoyed a variety of musical styles, ranging from music by Strauss and Britten through to ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy.

The Collegiate Chorus delighted everyone with a lovely arrangement of ‘What a Wonderful World’ and the gospel style of ‘Praise His Holy Name’. The newly formed Jazz Band provided great entertainment in many ‘different ways’ (Austin Powers) in their performances of ‘Hawaii-Five-O’ and ‘Soul Bossa Nova’.

A sense of calm was communicated in the Girls’ Choir’s performance of ‘Eternity’ by Michael Bojesen. An excellent array of soloists and a Brit Pop ensemble delighted the audience with performances which were both musically alert and stylish.

All in all, it was a great evening and many congratulations must go to all the pupils who represented the school so well.

Matrices: Years 7/8 Mathematics Enrichment

How do you get a computer to understand a picture?

That was the question that absorbed twenty Year 7 and Year 8

pupils last Wednesday afternoon. The answer is the mathemati-

cal topic of Matrices; grids of numbers that can be used to repre-

sent diagrams and the coordinates that make up shapes. The

pupils involved were from the top sets in their year groups and

had the opportunity to grapple with mathematical concepts usu-

ally reserved for Further Maths A Level.

After an introduction to the theme of the afternoon, Mr Beards-

ley showed the pupils how to calculate the dimension of a Matrix,

how to add and multiply Matrices and then how to use a Matrix

to not just represent a 2D shape, but also to enlarge and rotate it.

The pupils benefitted enormously from something a little different, as well as having their interest stirred in the practical

applications of mathematics.

Year 10 Languages Day

On Friday 9 March, Year 10 pupils from our school joined with pupils from Beverley High School, Longcroft School, Beverley

Grammar School, Kelvin Hall School and Hessle High School to listen to representatives from the private and public sector

presenting on how foreign languages are essential tools in the world of work.

GCHQ, a government intelligence agency employing over 6,000 people from diverse backgrounds which aims to keep our

country safe and secure by working with the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and MI5, were the first to speak. They provid-

ed a fascinating insight into the role of GCHQ and the specific responsibilities of language analysts within the organisation,

and then followed with specific taster sessions in Russian and Arabic.

Smith and Nephew, a massive local organisation which supports healthcare professionals in more than 100 countries, em-

ploying 16,000 employees around the world and with an annual income sales in 2017 of almost 4.8 billion dollars, delivered

an interesting session on the history and development of the company, its need for language professionals given its signifi-

cant international interests, and how to make yourself more marketable in terms of employment, bringing in some products

with multi-lingual descriptions for pupils to examine.

Finally, Siemens Gamesa, a leading international name in the renewable energy industry which is investing large scale in

Hull, also contributed to the day with a presentation on the company and a quiz identifying countries and languages related

to their international contacts and business interests.

Cross-curricular links to technology, business and marketing gave the day a generic flavour too and made it relevant to all,

whether it be pupils seriously looking at specialising in languages as a career in the future or pupils looking at languages as a

valuable addition to other possible careers.

Teacher and pupil feedback was excellent: ‘language sessions were truly engaging’, ‘our pupils came away buzzing’, ‘I loved

being able to have a decent conversation in both Russian and Arabic’, ‘it really made me think seriously of potential open-

ings in jobs relating to languages’, ‘what a great day!’.

Dear Teachers, Parents and Guardians

The team at Hessle Golf Club are excited to be able to offer girls, aged between 5yrs and 18yrs, the opportunity to take

part in a 2 hour, free, fun golf taster session on Sunday 8 April 13:00 – 15:00.

This is part of the Girls Golf Rocks national project, in association with England Golf, to encourage girls into golf.

Golf Professionals coach and talented county golfers mentor younger girls introducing them to all the benefits and fun of

the sport.

If you know any girls who you think would like to get involved with this great game and take advantage of this unique op-

portunity, please get in touch with:

The Professional staff on 01482 306840 EXT 2 or email [email protected]

OR book a place online by visiting www.getintogolf.org and search for Hessle Golf Club.

Girls Golf Rocks is all about attracting

beginners to have fun, learn a new sport,

get active and play alongside friends -

with no pressure. Girl golfers from coun-

ty squads act as ambassadors to share

their enjoyment and inspire other girls;

showing that golf is fun, competitive, but

also social and a great way of making

new friends

Following the free taster sessions there

will be the opportunity to take up 5

coaching sessions for a cost of £14. This

will include a free 7 iron provided all

coaching sessions are attended. Later in

the year all participants will be invited to

a fun event at Rudding Park Golf Club

where the girls will be able to use all the

skills they have learned and meet other

girls who have done the same at other

Clubs in the County.

This is a specific initiative to get girls into

golf, but at Hessle Golf Club, we are pas-

sionate about juniors and are trying very

hard to promote junior golf. We already

have a very full junior programme that is

being constantly improved with many

incentives. If you would like any further

information about our junior golf pro-

gramme, which includes the boys, please

get in touch with any of the above con-

tacts and we will all be happy to help

and guide.

FoHCS 1st Ever Promises Event

For 2018 FoHCS have decided to try something completely new. Our first ever Promises Event.

This event will consist of either a Promises Auction and/or a Promises Raffle TBD. In a Promises Event the auction items/

raffle prizes are all services or experiences rather than physical things.

The way it works is this. The people donating the auction items/prizes make a promise. This could be anything from prom-

ising to allow the winner of the auction item/raffle prize to use their holiday home or vintage car for a weekend or week,

to promising to provide an hour or more specific services e.g professional services, such as accountancy, or general ser-

vices such as gardening or DIY.

Other examples might be:

a group of teachers promising to take a set number of school age children on a half day or day trip to a local

museum;

a music teacher promising to give a free hour or more music lesson;

a vet promising to allow a school age child to shadow them for a day;

a promise by HCS to provide a free after school club for one child for one term.

The sky is the limit! A mixture of promises to appeal to both children and parents works best. All promises are welcome,

from parents, teachers, local businesses and anyone else connected with HCS.

Please let FoHCS have your promises by Tuesday 27 March 2018 by emailing [email protected].

Let’s make this 1st ever Promises Event one to remember!

With many thanks in advance. FoHCS

Promises will be included in the Promises Auction or Raffle at FoHCS’ discretion.
