Message from the Headteacher
Key Values: Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm
Dear Parents
Over the weekend I found myself talking to my niece who is thinking of going into teaching. She asked me if I would still recommend the profession and what I personally enjoy most. It was a good question that caused me to stop and think. We know that nationally there is a shortage of teachers, challenges abound. Negative news around budgets and bureaucracy. But I would absolutely recom-mend teaching if you like being with children/young people and if you are also passionate about your subject. I recall my first job, at Hymers College, I was amazed that someone would actually pay me to do what I loved doing, marveling in the wonders of geography to captive audiences who could not escape me.
My niece then asked, now that I am less often in the classroom, where the magic moments come from. I still derive huge pleasure from seeing pupils do things that I wish I could have done when I was younger. Travelling to Uganda, performing at City Hall , debating, hav-ing the opportunity to go to the Big Bang Science Fair.
Perhaps then, one of the enduring pleasures of working in a school is the chance to live vicariously. When my students sing, it could be my voice. When they put a netball in to the net I feel the impact, when they speak another language, I cross linguistic boundaries. When they collect an award, I hold it. When they contribute positively to their community, I’m changing the world. I feel the pride eve-ry time.
Parents may recognise this feeling when they witness their own children achieving things that they, as parents, could never do. One of the many joys of teaching is that there is almost no limit to our opportunities to feel part of the achievements of others.

I hope that you are able to join us tonight or Saturday to see the hard work that has gone into the school pro-duction this year. It really is a delight to see, particularly as it involves pupils from across the whole school.

Year 12 Modern Languages day at Hull University - Tuesday 14
March
On Tuesday 14 March five Year 12/13 linguists attended a languages workshop at Hull University. They experienced university style language sessions devised by current trainee teachers (some native speaking) who focused on topics relevant to the A level specifica-tion, including the Subjunctive. They were also given an informative tour of the university campus and listened to current undergraduates and postgradu-ates who spoke about their language degrees and how their love of language learning had transformed their lives and opened the door to new and exciting opportunities. Year 7/8 curriculum enrichment session (Language)
As part of our on-going KS3 enrichment programme a small group of pupils in Year 7 and 8 were invited to attend a session delivered by Mrs Meltham this week on the origins of the English language. This was a unique opportunity for pupils to consider the development of the English language through the study of Beowolf and Anglo-Saxonisms, the Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare and finally common place names and dialects today. Links were also made to German in particu-lar. The pupils appreciated Mrs Meltham's expertise in this unusual area of academic study and felt that it en-hanced their understanding of key influ-ences on the language we all speak and take for granted today. A big thank you to Mrs Meltham from all the pupils! GS

ERT's new artistic director, Adrian Rawlins, directs the first in-house production of the year - 'The Night Season' by Rebecca Lenkiewicz. "I first saw this play at the National Theatre in 2004 and was so riveted I never wanted it to end. It's such a rich, touching and hilarious tale following the lives of the Ken-nedy family as they each fall noisily in and out of love. We have a fantastic cast in place and my mission is to make it as enjoyable for you as it was for me back then" Lily, the eccentric Grandma, just wants to know a man one last time. Patrick, the drunken father, craves tobacco, whiskey and a date with the local barmaid... The three sisters yearn for sensation and escape. The Night Season is a funny, modern and intoxicating tale of loves, losses and misdemeanours.

Sports Pavilion Opening
It was a pleasure to welcome Nick Barmby, former professional England footballer to open the new Sports Pavilion last Wednes-day. Nick was joined by GB weightlifting champion Sarah Davies and 20 guests for this great occasion. The pavilion boasts two changing rooms with individual showers, a functional kitchen and an area that can be transformed into a classroom, complete with an interactive whiteboard and a wall-mounted television.
Thank you to Jonathan Moore, the Friends of Hull Collegiate School and Patrons, whose support has made this fabulous addition to the school possible and Sangwins for a professional service on the build. The continued development of our facilities and invest-ment in workshops are key to the high quality educational offer we provide and are fundamental to the life experiences the school offers our pupils.
