After the frigid cold temperatures and snow storms this past Winter, it is nice to know that Spring is right around the corner.

The Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to once again offer a wide variety of programs and events for everyone to enjoy throughout the spring and summer months. We encourage you to take the time to look through this brochure and log on to our website at www.torringtonct.myrec.com, where you will be able to view programs and register online.

As we roll into Spring, the Parks Department will be hard at work preparing all of our parks and athletic fields for everyone to enjoy and partake in a variety of recreational pursuits.

The Next Generation

of Dance, Gymnastics & Fitness

You can register in person at the Torrington Parks and Recreation Department in the Armory at

office. Credit card purchases may be made online only, with a convenience fee applied to each

transaction. Once classes begin, no refunds will be given unless there are medical reasons,

Register in August for classes that begin September 10, 2018 and run consecutively

through a performance in May 2019. There are three, 12 week sessions.

IRISH STEP DANCING - LEARN DANCES OF THE EMERALD ISLE!

Traditional and Contemporary Irish Step Dancing, Ceili Dancing, and Group Figures. Irish Dance is a lively, quick, and very fun genre. Children usually love it. Classes are taught by Jack McArdle, who has over 35 years experience, including performances at Carnegie Hall and on Irish TV. Jack achieved certification as a master teacher of Irish Dance with the Irish Dance Commission in Dublin, Ireland. All dancers aim for mastery of the art; many join the performance team; some undertake the more intense commitment needed to gain world-class status in contemporary work. All are welcome.

One (1) hour lessons; exact time depends on achievement level. Beginners always start on Fridays.

ADULT BEGINNER TENNIS LESSONS

This Adult Beginner Tennis Program will teach you the

basics of Tennis and will have you learning how to play real

games by the end of it. The class will cover ground strokes,

volleys, and serving, as well as, scoring and doubles

positioning when the students are ready. Participants should

wear sneakers and will be able to borrow club tennis

racquets if needed.

This is your chance to introduce your child to the game of a lifetime! Junior-Junior Golf Camp is a weeklong series directed by Chet Dunlop, Connecticut PGA Teacher of the Year, in which he utilizes your child’s sense of curiosity and fun to expand their natural abilities. This five hour class is for children that are new to the game as well as those who have experience with the game. Focuses will be first and foremost, the enjoyment of the game and sportsmanship. Equipment will be provided for those that need it for no extra charge. Be sure to bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen.

JUNIOR GOLF CAMP

Have you ever wondered why is golf called the game of a lifetime?

Perhaps it is because many valuable lessons learned in the exploration of the game will remain with your junior long after they leave the course. Youngsters discover how to make decisions by thinking of the possible consequences, how to define and set goals, and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. Other important skills that cross over and remain with your young golfer include sportsmanship, integrity, confidence, and perseverance.

Junior Golf Camp is a five-hour series directed by Chet Dunlop Connecticut PGA Teacher of the Year, and Director of New England School of Golf. This class is for juniors between the ages of eight and fourteen whom are new to the game as well as more experienced players. Focus will be first and foremost on the enjoyment of the game.

Fundamentals of the full swing, the short game, and putting will be presented so that to each student can progress at their own pace. Equipment will be provided for those who need it at no extra charge.

For: Ages 8-12

This league, in its 34th year, will be using the

following format and team entry fees:

Location: Armory and School Gyms

Fee: Torrington Team - $650; Out-of-Town Team - $775

Monday - Friday evenings, Saturday daytime, and some Sundays.

Start date subject to change.

Only team registrations will be accepted, no individual registrations.

*There will be a mandatory coaches meeting on Saturday, May

19, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Armory.

MEN’S & WOMEN’S

PICK-UP BASKETBALL

Come out and get some exercise and brush

up on your game with pick-up basketball at the

Armory. Participants will organize their owns

teams and call their own games - there will be

no referees.

All participants must fill out a registration form

and waiver prior to participating.

For: Men and Women - 18 and Older

Date: Sundays, July 1 - August 19, 2018

Safe Boating/Personal

Watercraft Certification Course The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Safe Boating/Personal Watercraft Certification Course to be

presented by the State of Connecticut DEEP. Attendance on all three days of the course is required. Participants who

successfully complete this course and pass the test qualify for a Safe Boating Certificate and a Certificate of Personal Watercraft

Operation which allow an individual to operate any recreational vessel including a personal watercraft ("jet ski" type vessel) on

Connecticut's waters.

The registration fee submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department covers only the cost of attending the 3-day course.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will need to purchase the Safe Boating/Personal Watercraft Certificates

through the State of Connecticut DEEP for an additional fee of $50.00. All participants are required to have a State of CT

Conservation ID number. You may register for the course without an ID number however you must have one established prior

to the first night of class.

For: Ages 12 and Up Minimum: 15 Maximum: 60

BABYSITTER SAFETY 101

This is an entry level course intended to teach age appropriate

skills necessary to care for children of all ages using team

babysitting, mother’s helper and individual babysitting

concepts. The course focuses on safety with emphasis on

prevention. Basic first aid and obstructed airway management

for a conscious choking adult/child and infant will be covered.

Other topics include hand washing, diapering, bottle feeding,

personal safety, interview skills, and many more topics.

For: Ages 10 - 15 Min: 10 Max: 15

Torrington Park and Recreation Department, beginning April 16, 2018.

1. Registration and payment for trips and leagues must be made in person at the Torrington Parks and Recreation Office,

located inside the Armory at 153 South Main Street.

2. Registration for all programs, lessons etc. may be made either in person or be mailed to the Torrington Parks and

Recreation Department, 153 South Main Street, Torrington, CT 06790. Mail-in registrations MUST be postmarked one week

prior to the starting time of any program.

3. Please observe any deadlines indicated. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE REGISTRATIONS ARE ACCEPTED - THEY WILL BE

RETURNED. Registrations are accepted on first come, first served basis.

4. Torrington residents are given first priority to register for all programs. Non-residents may register for programs on an

availability basis one week prior to the start of the program. This does not apply to adult sports leagues, lessons and trips.

5. When enrollment is insufficient, classes and/or leagues may be cancelled and/or combined. All programs in this brochure

are subject to change.

6. If the program you wish to register for is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified immediately in the event

that there is an opening in that program.

7. If a program is cancelled by Torrington Parks and Recreation, a full refund or credit will be given.

8. Requests made two weeks or more prior to the start of any program will be refunded. After this point, absolutely NO

refunds or credits will be given unless there are medical reasons, accompanied by a written physician’s note.

9. Up until two weeks before the date of a trip, one may request a full refund or credit only if the program’s minimum

participant requirement is still met. Otherwise, there will be no refunds on trips. If a trip is cancelled by Torrington Parks and

Recreation, a full refund or credit will be given.

10.To receive a refund, a written request must be submitted. Refunds take approximately 2 weeks to process.

11. Cash or Checks are accepted for all registrations mailed in or dropped off at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Participants may also register and pay with a credit card through our online system on our website www.torringtonct.org. An

additional fee is assessed for all credit card transactions.

12. If a payment made by check is returned for insufficient funds, the person making payment must pay the program fee,

plus a $20.00 processing fee in cash or money order prior to being able to participate in the program.

The City of Torrington Park & Recreation Department Program (as defined below, “Program”) involves a variety of

physical activities and there is an element of risk involved, which each participant must assume (including injury,

disability or death). I affirm that my health is adequate and that I am not under a physician’s care for any undisclosed

condition that bears upon my fitness to participate in the Program. The undersigned hereby agrees:

1. I fully assume all risks associated with utilization of and participation in the program(s) listed above and agree not

to sue and hereby release the City of Torrington, its agents, servants, employees, volunteers, elected officials

boards and commissions (collectively “The City”), from all liability should an injury to me or listed participant occur

during participation in the said program(s).

2. I, for myself and for my heirs, executors, administrators, and legal representatives, agree to defend, indemnify and

hold harmless the City, from any and all claims, suits or demands by anyone arising from my use of or participation

in the program.

3. If I am a parent or guardian signing on behalf of a child or ward, I make these representations and agreements on

behalf of my child or ward.

4. I give permission to the Torrington Parks & Recreation Department to use any photo or video taken during

participation for promotional materials. I have read and understand the policies adopted by the Torrington Parks
