After the frigid cold temperatures and snow storms this past Winter, it is nice to know that Spring is right around the corner.

The Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to once again offer a wide variety of programs and events for everyone to enjoy throughout the spring and summer months. IRISH STEP DANCING - LEARN DANCES OF THE EMERALD ISLE!

Traditional and Contemporary Irish Step Dancing, Ceili Dancing, and Group Figures. Irish Dance is a lively, quick, and very fun genre. Children usually love it. Classes are taught by Jack McArdle, who has over 35 years experience, including performances at Carnegie Hall and on Irish TV. Jack achieved certification as a master teacher of Irish Dance with the Irish Dance Commission in Dublin, Ireland. All dancers aim for mastery of the art; many join the performance team; some undertake the more intense commitment needed to gain world-class status in contemporary work. All are welcome.

This Adult Beginner Tennis Program will teach you the

basics of Tennis and will have you learning how to play real

games by the end of it. The class will cover ground strokes,

This is your chance to introduce your child to the game of a lifetime! Junior-Junior Golf Camp is a weeklong series directed by Chet Dunlop, Connecticut PGA Teacher of the Year, in which he utilizes your child’s sense of curiosity and fun to expand their natural abilities. This five hour class is for children that are new to the game as well as those who have experience with the game. Focuses will be first and foremost, the enjoyment of the game and sportsmanship. Equipment will be provided for those that need it for no extra charge. Be sure to bring a water bottle and wear sunscreen.

JUNIOR GOLF CAMP

Have you ever wondered why is golf called the game of a lifetime?

Perhaps it is because many valuable lessons learned in the exploration of the game will remain with your junior long after they leave the course. Youngsters discover how to make decisions by thinking of the possible consequences, how to define and set goals, and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. Other important skills that cross over and remain with your young golfer include sportsmanship, integrity, confidence, and perseverance.

Junior Golf Camp is a five-hour series directed by Chet Dunlop Connecticut PGA Teacher of the Year, and Director of New England School of Golf. This class is for juniors between the ages of eight and fourteen whom are new to the game as well as more experienced players. Focus will be first and foremost on the enjoyment of the game.

Fundamentals of the full swing, the short game, and putting will be presented so that to each student can progress at their own pace. Equipment will be provided for those who need it at no extra charge.

For: Ages 8-12

This league, in its 34th year, will be using the

PICK-UP BASKETBALL

Come out and get some exercise and brush

up on your game with pick-up basketball at the

Armory. Participants will organize their owns

teams and call their own games - there will be

no referees.

Safe Boating/Personal

Watercraft Certification Course The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Safe Boating/Personal Watercraft Certification Course to be

presented by the State of Connecticut DEEP. Attendance on all three days of the course is required. Participants who

successfully complete this course and pass the test qualify for a Safe Boating Certificate and a Certificate of Personal Watercraft

Operation which allow an individual to operate any recreational vessel including a personal watercraft ("jet ski" type vessel) on

Connecticut's waters.

The registration fee submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department covers only the cost of attending the 3-day course.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will need to purchase the Safe Boating/Personal Watercraft Certificates

through the State of Connecticut DEEP for an additional fee of $50.00. All participants are required to have a State of CT

Conservation ID number. You may register for the course without an ID number however you must have one established prior

to the first night of class.

BABYSITTER SAFETY 101

This is an entry level course intended to teach age appropriate

skills necessary to care for children of all ages using team

babysitting, mother’s helper and individual babysitting

concepts. The course focuses on safety with emphasis on

prevention. Basic first aid and obstructed airway management

for a conscious choking adult/child and infant will be covered.

Other topics include hand washing, diapering, bottle feeding,

personal safety, interview skills, and many more topics.

For: Ages 10 - 15 Min: 10 Max: 15

This course is for youth 12 to 16+ years of age with a sincere

interest in advanced concepts and skills of First Aid including

CPR certification. Building on the entry level skills from

Babysitter 101, objectives for this scenario based, expanded

course includes additional First Aid concept, Adult/Child and

Infant CPR. Requires written and skills testing to receive 2

year certification. *Prerequisite: Must have taken Babysitter

Safety 101 or similar class.

The Torrington Teen Center, located in Recreation Hall on East Albert Street will be open for Middle School and

High School Students. Come down with your friends and enjoy a game of pool, ping-pong, video games, board

games, listen to music, watch TV, or just hang out and unwind after school. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

This year marks the 13th Anniversary of Northwest Idol and competition will soon be underway! Start

preparing now for your audition. Auditions will consist of each participant singing a cappella. All

interested participants must complete an application, which is available in the Torrington Parks &

Recreation Department at the Armory or online at www.torringtonct.org - link to Parks and Recreation

Northwest Idol. The competition is open to all individuals ages 15 and up. Applications are due by May

25, 2018. *Prizes will be awarded to the Top Three Finalists!

SUMMER ACTION & ADVENTURE PROGRAM

Location: Action Camp - Pleasant View Park on Durand St.; Adventure Camp - Major Besse Park on Riverside Ave.

Cost: Torrington Parks and Recreation has several packages available to meet the varying needs of our campers and families. You are able to sign up for two week sessions or select a package that covers the whole summer and saves you money. Please review the options below and select the package that is best for you! There will be an additional $20.00 fee per child/week for non-residents of Torrington; prices in

parentheses reflect the non-resident fee. There are no non-resident fees for Before and After Care.

There is a separate application for the summer playground program available at the Parks & Recreation Department.

The last day for registration will be June 8th. There will be a limited number of spots available for enrollment. We are looking forward to a fun-filled, active and enlightening summer that integrates physical and educational activities. The children will be involved in a variety of organized sports, hikes, swimming, arts and crafts, group games, weekly field trips, and much more!

Late Pick-up Fee: $5.00 per 15 minutes after scheduled time of pick-up.

All children MUST bring a lunch, snack, and plenty of water and/or sports drink.

Towels, swimsuits and sunscreen should be brought on specified swim days. Children will not be allowed in the pool unless they have the appropriate attire.

WILLIAM L. BESSE MUNICIPAL SWIMMING POOL Every person entering the pool must pay or have a pass. Pool passes are available ONLY at the

Torrington Park and Recreation Department, beginning April 16, 2018.

POOL HOURS: June 23 - August 26, 2018, Monday-Friday 12:30 - 7:00 PM, Saturday-Sunday 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM. *This

schedule is tentative and subject to change.

POOL RULES REGARDING ADMITTANCE:

Individuals 13 & under must be accompanied by an adult.

Individuals 14 & over – a YOUTH PASS or Picture ID with DOB is required to enter the pool by themselves.

Individuals 16 & over may bring in children (limit of 3, age 13 years or younger) as long as they have an PASS or Picture ID with DOB. They must take responsibility for the younger children at all times.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW POOL RULES MAY RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING:

1st Rule Infraction - Verbal warning or time out of the pool.

2nd Rule Infraction - One hour out of pool area or removal from pool area for the day.

3rd Rule Infraction - Three day suspension of pool privileges. Pool rules and regulations are posted at the pool. The Parks and Recreation Department will not issue

refunds for loss of pool privileges due to infraction of rules.

SWIMMING LESSONS Enrollment is based on a first-come, first-serve basis for Torrington residents. Pool Passes will be available beginning April 16th. The minimum age for beginner lessons is age 5. A copy of a birth certificate for any new student must be shown to the Parks and Recreation Department prior to the first class. You will only be allowed to register for one session and level at a time. Class times are subject to change based on the number of instructors. The Torrington Arts & Culture Commission, in partnership with the Torrington Park and Recreation Department presents “A Saturday in the Park” featuring the first annual “Torrington Strawberry Festival” taking place on June 9, 2018 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM (rain date is June 10, 2018.)

This event is FREE and open to the public and will offer an arts & craft fair with vendors from all over the region, live music, food trucks and of course… the best strawberry shortcake you’ve ever tasted! Also on-hand will be the “Main Street Marketplace Express” train taking passengers (adults & children) for a ride around the park. The cost for a ride is $2.00 per person.

CFPA will be hosting a Field Day at Burr Pond.

Activities will be include:

A guided paddle tour for people who bring their own boats/safety equipment - weather permitting.

History walk and talk about the park.

Scavenger Hunt.

Tree/plant ID, Wildflower, and Family hikes.

Trail clean-up.

In addition to these guided activities, there will be a number of vendors who will offer interactive/engaging displays.

Food will be available for sale and people are welcome to bring picnics along.

Torrington Parks and Recreation and the Mayor’s Committee on Youth will also be on hand, sponsoring a game area for children and families.

1. Registration and payment for trips and leagues must be made in person at the Torrington Parks and Recreation Office,

located inside the Armory at 153 South Main Street.

2. Registration for all programs, lessons etc. may be made either in person or be mailed to the Torrington Parks and

Recreation Department, 153 South Main Street, Torrington, CT 06790. Mail-in registrations MUST be postmarked one week

prior to the starting time of any program.

3. Please observe any deadlines indicated. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE REGISTRATIONS ARE ACCEPTED - THEY WILL BE

RETURNED. Registrations are accepted on first come, first served basis.

4. Torrington residents are given first priority to register for all programs. Non-residents may register for programs on an

availability basis one week prior to the start of the program. This does not apply to adult sports leagues, lessons and trips.

5. When enrollment is insufficient, classes and/or leagues may be cancelled and/or combined. All programs in this brochure

are subject to change.

6. If the program you wish to register for is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified immediately in the event

that there is an opening in that program.

7. If a program is cancelled by Torrington Parks and Recreation, a full refund or credit will be given.

8. Requests made two weeks or more prior to the start of any program will be refunded. After this point, absolutely NO

refunds or credits will be given unless there are medical reasons, accompanied by a written physician’s note.

9. Up until two weeks before the date of a trip, one may request a full refund or credit only if the program’s minimum

participant requirement is still met. Otherwise, there will be no refunds on trips. If a trip is cancelled by Torrington Parks and

Recreation, a full refund or credit will be given.

10.To receive a refund, a written request must be submitted. Refunds take approximately 2 weeks to process.

11. Cash or Checks are accepted for all registrations mailed in or dropped off at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Participants may also register and pay with a credit card through our online system on our website www.torringtonct.org. An

additional fee is assessed for all credit card transactions.

12. If a payment made by check is returned for insufficient funds, the person making payment must pay the program fee,

plus a $20.00 processing fee in cash or money order prior to being able to participate in the program.
