Hello PHHS Key Clubbers!

Even with two weeks this month in which we were only in school for two full days, Key Clubbers still managed to get a lot of service tucked under their belts (despite Thanksgiving food, too!). Check out this issue for articles recapping our November service projects, see sneak peaks about upcoming events, and learn about executive board elections— which will be just around the corner! Thank you all for keeping up the service spirit amidst hectic times, and we hope to see the enthusiasm continue as the year goes on!

Yours in Caring and Service,Tara Srinivasan and Shreya Nair

Although the 2016-2017 service year is only about halfway through, it’s never too early to start thinking about running for office! With board elections coming up in January, it’s time to start thinking about how you can make your Key Club experience even better. If you are a general member and want to get more involved, becoming an executive member at the high school level is a great opportunity to learn more about Key Club and contribute to the planning that goes into our mission to serve. Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, or even a junior, it’s not too late to get on board.

Here our some words from our very own Vanessa Ting, who has gone from general member to bulletin editor to vice president, and is currently our Lieutenant Governor of Division 20:

Board Election BuzzWhat is one thing you’ve most enjoyed about being a Key Club officer? It sounds mundane and tedious, but one of my favorite parts of being an officer is signing members in at meetings. It's always nice interacting with everyone, as well as seeing members consistently come to meetings week after week. Serving on the district board has also given me the unique opportunity to hear everyone's backgrounds in Key Club; it's always funny to hear fellow LTGs saying they joined Key Club because of the pizza.

How do you feel you’ve changed throughout your journey from general member to LTG?I distinctly remember my freshmen year, running for club editor and not even being able to look at the members as I read my speech.

Since then, I've spoken multiple times at conferences, district events, or at general club meetings. My public speaking skills are perhaps the most obvious thing that has developed throughout my four years of Key Club, but I've also certainly become more outgoing and confident.

What advice/encouragement do you have for general members interested in running for office?Definitely go for it! One of the most important things to think about it is that when people elect their officers, they're not only voting for members who are great leaders; they're also voting for members who are nice people. Make sure that you come across as confident, but also friendly. Above all, be yourself and state goals that you know you will be able to accomplish -- being genuine and having realistic goals can go a long way in elections.

Find out more about each position from last year’s election issue here. We hope you consider running!

This month, the NJ District is putting Adopt a US Soldier in the spotlight. This non-profit organization puts caring citizens in contact with deployed troops, allowing our soldiers to be reminded that back home they have an overflowing abundance of encouragement and gratitude. With our soldiers away from home doing their part for the country, it is our part to provide them with the much needed support by sending a weekly letter or postcard. At www.adoptaussoldier.org, you can help show the brave men and women who have devoted their lives to ensure peace for our country that their sacrifice has not and will not go unnoticed. Your support makes a difference!

Peek Outside PHHS:What’s the K-Family Up To?

Don't miss out on an amazing opportunity to watch Elf and participate in exciting activities with Key Club members across Division 20 and 21! The divisional event will be held this Thursday, December 1st from 6:30 PM to 8:45 PM at the Parsippany Public Library, and the admission fee is $5 per person or 3 cans. This fun movie night, which will also provide snacks, is important because not only does it give general members a chance to spend time with our district governor and other Key Clubbers, but all proceeds will be going towards the District Service Project, Hunger in New Jersey. Especially with the holidays coming up, many families cannot afford a proper dinner. Don't forget to come to the event and show your Key Club spirit by helping out within our own community!
