Participants will have the unique opportunity to observe diverse responses to a variety of healthcare issues in both rural and urban clin- ics, public health non-governmental organiza- tions (NGOs) and hospitals in India. You will also gain hands on field experience working side by side with health practitioners engaged in ongoing client care Finally, you will assist faculty and graduate students’ research by working on one of their projects. Together, these experiences will enhance your graduate or medical school portfolios. During your time in Mysore you will: Observe/shadow in local healthcare ser- vice providers and organizations Study with local public health experts and university researchers in specially de- signed interdisciplinary courses Learn about health care in global contexts via field experience guided by FIU and local researchers and health workers Enhance your academic and fieldwork experience portfolio with the development A important part of the program is involvement in research project. Antenatal screening of pregnant women Build environment and health outcomes Caste and class’ impact on health access Forced migrations’ impact on tribal health Infection control in intensive care settings Intimate partner violence among young adults Medical tourism (e.g. dental & dermatology) Parenting styles and child behaviors Police interview protocols with violence cases Peer education for cervical cancer screenings Pregnant women’s depression screening Rapid diagnosis tests of BV and TB Social networks HIV positive mothers use Survey of Traditional Rural Birthing Practices Urinary tract infection & antibiotic susceptibility Integrating wholistic health approaches (e.g. yoga, spirituality) Participating in this program not only provides you with valuable skills and knowledge, but you will gain concrete materials that will strengthen graduate and/ or medical school application. This can include potential letters of recommendations, a relevant writing sample/ presentation, applied research skills, and global cultural competency experiences. The program fee includes: FIU Course Materials Accommodations Daily Breakfast & Lunch Travel Insurance U.S. & India Daily Support Services All Cultural Activities and Excursions fees Students can use Financial Aid to fund their program participation. This study abroad program provides you with a chance to explore one of the most populous nations in the world’s health systems and learn the successes and challenges from firsthand experience. This program is designed for stu-dents seeking to continue their studies in gradu-ate or medical school programs. As such, you must be a highly motivated and competitive stu-dent to participate in this program. Students that wish to participate must have a minimum GPA of 3.5; these are typical minimums to be considered for academically rigorous graduate programs and

medical schools.

This program ensures students not only gain relevant research experience, but also fulfill key degree requirements. Students that participate in the program will regis-ter for CLP 4314: Psych of Health & Illness (FIU Global Learning Course & area C requirement for psych majors), PSY 4931: Senior Seminar in Global Health (capstone for psych majors; upper division elective), and PSY 4941: Independent Field Experiences (upper division elective).
