MBA Career Services and Employer Alliance, 2014 European Conference2

It is my pleasure to join the MBA CSEA Board of Directors and 2014 European Conference Planning Committee to welcome you to HEC Paris and to MBA CSEA’s 7th Annual European Conference. Last year’s outstanding event in Edinburgh - which saw record attendance for an MBA CSEA European Conference - was a resounding success, and it’s very exciting to see it followed by the excellent agenda this year’s hardworking committee has put together for you.

Our conference theme, Partnering for a Global Mindset, challenges us over the next few days to thoroughly engage and explore how we partner with our various stakeholders – especially that critical partnership between MBA

career services and employers – to optimize results both for the organizations we represent and for our professional selves. And as MBA CSEA celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the organization’s core values of member-focused collaboration, integrity, and diversity are well wrapped up in the outstanding programming being offered to you this week.

I would like to offer my thanks to this year’s dedicated conference committee for their hard work and long hours - especially to co-chairs Colin Hudson (Cranfield School of Management) and Fran Johnson (Manchester Business School) for their solid leadership. I also extend a heartfelt thanks to Tony Somers and his team at HEC Paris for their hospitality, facilities, and enthusiasm in hosting this event.

Enjoy the conference!

Mark Peterson, MBA CSEA President

Welcome

Over the past seven years, I have watched our European Conference grow from a small group of school representatives discussing hot trends in MBA career services to a much larger constituency of schools and employers from across the world. Each year we grow both in size and perspective, and this year is no different. I’m honored to be a part of this spectacular event!

As I look back at what we’ve become as an organization over the past 20 years, I am in awe of the influence we have had on the industry and the professional development of our members. I’m excited about where we are headed in the future and equally excited to have such a large and passionate European membership base to make the journey with us.

The success of our organization and this conference depends heavily on the dedication and enthusiasm of our strong team of volunteers. As you enjoy the programming and networking over the next few days, please be sure to take time out to thank our volunteers, without whom we wouldn’t be here learning and progressing.

Enjoy!

Megan Hendricks, Executive Director, MBA CSEA

Partnering for a Global Mindset

As we'll discover through this year's conference programme it is crucial our industry develops a clear understanding of the skills, attributes and networks MBA's need - both to navigate the global job market and to become industry leaders on the world stage.

With the help of our renowned Key Note speakers - Herminia Ibarra, a leading professor at INSEAD and one of HBR's 50 Most Influential Management Gurus and JessIca Glazer AD of Career Programs & Education at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and lecturer on Positive Psychology – we will identify ways Employers, Business Schools and Technology can work in partnership to create the knowledge and relationships needed to achieve a truly global mind-set.

Developing this year's conference has been an incredible experience and, thanks to the members of conference committee and HEC's amazing facilities, we're confident this year's programme of educational (and social) events will surpass all expectations.

We really hope you enjoy the next few days and are looking forward to seeing you all on the Seine!

Colin Hudson and Fran Johnson, conference co-chairs

Jessica Glazer is a lecturer in the Johns Hopkins University Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Her course Positive Psychology is consistently rated by students as "one of the best courses at Hopkins."

Jessica spent several years at Harvard University as a Head Teaching Fellow for both the Psychology and English Departments, where she won a teaching award for every class for which she taught.Previously, Jessica served as Director of Career Programs & Advising at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and managed MBA employer relationships at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

For more information, please visit www.jessicaglazer.com

Jessica’s talk is titled “Taking FLIGHT: Creating Positive Global Leaders”. As we seek to help our MBA students become Global Leaders - and as we strive to become Global Leaders ourselves - we must broaden our focus to include an emphasis on positive change. Research from the exciting and emergent field of Positive Psychology shows that with proper attention, easy interventions, and an emphasis on active engagement, we can not only reach our full potential, but can help others to do the same. Join Jessica Glazer (Lecturer, Johns Hopkins University) for an interactive lecture on the tenets of Positive Psychology and how they can be employed to help us thrive personally and professionally.

Herminia Ibarra is the Cora Chaired Professor of Leadership and Learning and Professor of Organizational Behavior at INSEAD. An expert on professional careers and leadership development, Ibarra’s articles on these topics are published in leading journals. At INSEAD, she directs The Leadership Transition, an executive program for managers moving into broader leadership roles. Ibarra speaks and consults internationally on leadership development, talent management and women’s careers. She is Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Women’s Empowerment and Chair of the Visiting Committee of the Harvard Business School. Thinkers 50 ranked Ibarra #9 among the most influential business thinkers in the world.

Herminia’s talk is titled “Are we preparing our students for constant career disruption?” MBA careers as we’ve known them have been irrevocably disrupted. Graduates increasingly conduct their own independent job searches. Major transitions in what is expected of them at work no longer come neatly labeled with a new job title, formal move or career sequence. As old jobs disappear and new forms of working and organizing emerge, people are also changing careers more frequently, often with little guidance on how to make the transition to a new line of work. But, a pervasive norm of overwork leaves them little slack for developing the new skills and networks needed to shift successfully into their next roles and careers. In this talk, Herminia will discuss major career trends for which we must prepare our graduates and the competencies required to make these “do-it-yourself“ transitions.

During the past 20 years...

MBA CSEA has evolved from a small group of MBA career services professionals in the U.S. trying to standardize employment reporting and be the voice of the profession, to a global leader driving the collaborative exchange of knowledge and innovation for employers and schools.

Our members in Europe have been a major contributor to our success, with the conferences being the pinnacle of that involvement. We are happy to celebrate the history and achievements of the organization and the industry here in Paris at our 7th Annual European Conference.

Thank you for being a part of MBA CSEA. We look forward to seeing where the next 20 years will take us!
