By 2012E-Books Transforming accessibility• Physical: Light easy to use e-book readers
• Low Vision: Enlarge & Bold the print on e-readers
• No Vision: Listen to synthetic speech reading text or use braille display to read with fingers
• Deaf & Blind: Braille display
• Dyslexic: Combine highlighted text with synthetic speech or narrated audio to re-enforce reading
• But still a poor user experience and many barriers
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
This is what Amazon say about the latest Kindle fire

Reading e-book with fingers
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
E Books in many languages• E-books are now used in most of the worlds major
languages
• Take up and use is fastest in English
• Slower in many cultures
• Accessibility depends on interaction between Reading System, Platform & Content plus availability of assistive technology
• Assistive Technology being incorporated into many Mainstream platforms: IOS, Android, Windows etc
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
Still a long way to go to full access!
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
The Impact: In last 4 yearsE-Books have transformed access in UK
for people with print disabilities• In 2000 less than 5% books readable with eyes ears or fingers
• By 2012 7% of all books available in UK accessible by eyes, ears & fingers. (Up from 5% in 2004)
• 84% of top 1000 books sold in 2012 are e-books, readable by eyes, ears & fingers on day of publication. (Up from 54% 2010 & 74% in 2011)
• Of top 1000 99% adult fiction, 77% Non fiction & 43% Children's readable by eyes, ears & fingers
• Illustrations, pictures, Maths, Science still significant problems• www.rnib.org.uk/knowledge-and-research-hub-research-reports/reading-and-braille-research
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
The Impact of e-Books on people:• Last year Amazon updated
the Kindle app to give better access to its 1.5 million books.
• Lets hear how this transformed reading for Laura in UK
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
Great Progress for people with Print disability: In English: But……… • Novel reading is OK: If you have knowledge & skills
• Navigating around book is a problem: back to a linear read, like tape
• Pictures, Non fiction, news, education & STEM still a problem
• People need knowledge of new ways to read + skills and confidence
• Most professionals don’t know what’s possible; Can’t help clients
• Cost & constant changes of reading technology
• Only In English & few other languages
• Problem of lack of speech synthesis for many languages
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish

Partnership with ICEVIInternational Council for Education of People with a Visual Impairment
• “Visionary Learning through Technology” is a model based on three elements that combine to deliver success for visually impaired learners in diverse settings:
kitconfidence content
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
Kit: “A device I can use”
• once a child has access to reading technology, a world of learning and opportunity opens up to them.
• this could be a smartphone, eReader, tablet, braille notetaker, or computer.
• a visually impaired child will be able to read books, and write their own schoolwork. This facilitates learning and greater communication and interaction within the classroom… and beyond
“Visionary Learning through Technology”
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
Confidence:“Skills that help me learn”• children with sight loss benefit enormously from
becoming proficient in reading and accessing information independently through accessible technology.
• parents and teachers must also learn about accessible technology, and ensure that the young learner is supported and encouraged on their journey.
Sightsavers NVDA training session in Sierra Leone
Creating the Best Way to Read and Publish
Content:“Books I can read”• Reading is the gateway to education, but for a child
with sight loss, very little is available in audio, braille or large print. If the text they need is in a suitable digital format, then children can read independently with their reading device.
• Not only books, but also resources provided by the teacher and from the internet. Our projects will provide textbooks, as well as training for teachers and publishers to make their materials accessible to visually impaired learners.
“Visionary Learning through Technology”
